Forum Owner and Member Integrity

some people recently raised concerns about security of the site relating to whether forum members could be watchtower plants trying to obtain information about people.

apparently, this was because a previous forum that was setup was either owned by or later handed over to someone who used it to collect personal information about people which was then used to harrass them.

i don't know all the details, i'm just paraphrasing what i've heard and recognize that it's a concern to some people.. i want to first of all put people's minds at rest: i've been running this site for what will be 13 years next month.

As someone who was here back in the old days, I would never forgive myself if I didn't give Simon some respect for what he created so many years ago. I'm not saying you have to agree with his politics nor his sometimes rash judgements as a forum administrator. I certainly haven't and still do not agree with everything he's said and done. Simon can be quite hard to get along with when you get on his bad side or he gets on yours. I think that's the one absolute fact of life that both he and I will always agree upon.

However never let it be said that his integrity is in any way compromised when it comes to his love for the community of ex-JW's. He set out to create a safe haven with this forum and has sought to keep it that way ever since. I have a lot of respect for him for what he's done and continues to do.

I can't believe sometimes that it has been so many years that this one forum has been up and running. It used to be THE place to be. Other forums came and went (with a salute to my old friend Slippy) and some of them were a bit more fun if you didn't mind blood on the floor (moment of silence for the forum that used to be "shall not be mentioned") but in the end this one survived.

Hooah.

Tell me you at least HELPED police up the brass and links and then clean the weapons! Otherwise there were some PVT's cursing the day you were born. It is extremely rude to participate in any live-fire exercise as a civilian and then just walk away without doing either. It doesn't matter what the NCOIC tells you.

Do you take energy shots or sleep shots? What do you take? How do you like them?

from time to time, i take 5 hour energy shots and ichill shots.

5 Hour Energy shots kept me going during Soldier Leadership Course. 16 hour days of powerpoints, D&C, field exercises, and a couple hours sleep interrupted by fire watch. Maybe 8 hours sleep in a 72-hour period. We were chugging those suckers like they were the nectar of the gods. The ads for 5 Hour Energy says that there's no crash and they LIE! When I'd get home, I'd barely get my boots off before I was asleep.

Did You Have A Lot Of Meetings With The Elders?

When I was 16 and 17 it was nearly every Thursday night (TMS and Service meeting night). Many times the meetings weren't even about anything specific, just a chance for the elders to beat down a helpless kid. There was one particular elder behind it all, acting as an instigator, and he would never be personally involved in the meetings. He'd just run his mouth and stir the pot, and I'd get called into a meeting. My dad was an elder and was never in the meetings. It didn't register with me at the time, but he should have been as I was a minor. As it turned out in the end, they had their own meetings with him and would beat him down over me even though I'd done nothing wrong.

What all that resulted in was my family being so discouraged that my dad resigned as an elder for a year or two, I lost my best friend, my brother learned to be invisible, and poor mom just kept on regular pioneering at times with no friends at all.

Way to go, WTS! Show the love!

more than one gunman seems to be involved in this terrible act.

families were attending mid-night showings of the dark knight movie.. the media should not give publicity tothe names of the perpetrators, they often crave the fame.

give them that fame and others will crave it too.. my thoughts are with the families of all that are affected, a horrific and pointless act that will bring so much pain and sorrow.. edited to say, seems as though it was a lone gunman..

NCO- How would you describe the psychological makeup of this man. He puts on protective gear to shoot unarmed people. Was he anticipating confronting the police after his deed. He rigs his apartment anticipating a search by police.

Designs, I want to know the answer to that myself. His story just does not make sense to me at all. I hope that as time goes by we get more answers because right now it is reading to me that at some point a bright promising and highly intelligent young man just snapped and became someone completely different. There was a trigger at some point in his life that has yet to be revealed.

Youngest person disfellowshipped -- ever?

I can remember a few disfellowshippings of 14-15 year olds in my area back in the 80's during the Great Warner Robins Purge. And I remember when I was a teenager myself hitting it off with a girl who was 15 who told me she'd been recently reinstated so doing the math of the unofficial 1-year-minimum requirement back then for reinstatement that would have put her disfellowshipping at age 13-14.

It is just disgusting to me that kids are treated this way and it is considered not only acceptable but "Jehovah's way" and praised. Jesus didn't treat ADULTS this way! He sought out sinners and people who were considered the lowest of society and taught them a simpler way to salvation, not the legalistic draconian laws the Pharisees imposed. Kids are gonna be kids, and when the hormones kick in, they need love and guidance and support, not rejection by the only world they know.

I recently talked to someone I grew up knowing in the JW's, who is getting on in years now, and he railed against how I was treated when I was a teenager.

FHN, the armor described sounds to me like the standard issue IOTV (Improved Outer Tactical Vest) I have. I would be curious to know if that vest had the level IV ceramic plates or just level III or lower kevlar inserts. Or if there were any SAPI plates or kevlar in it at all and was just the carrier vest. It can have stuff like a groin protector added to it and I've got all the collars and add-ons with the kevlar inserts. But he didn't have true head-to-toe protection. Even wearing the groin protector, the hips and groin area are still prime targets for neutralizing the threat. Hit the femoral artery and the target is going to bleed out before medics can arrive. Even a shot from a police issue .40 or 9mm impacting the groin protector would be as painful as a sledge hammer to the balls. The kevlar prevents penetration but that round still delivers a lot of impact to the body. And in any case, the IOTV doesn't provide protection to the pelvis and legs.

Ammunition capacity does not constitute an "assault rifle". I take it you haven't looked up the definition so I will supply it. An "assault rifle" fires a rifle cartridge from a detachable magazine and is capable of semiautomatic fire or fully automatic fire depending on setting of the selector switch. Mr. Holmes' AR-15, while cosmetically offensive to the hoplophobes in the world, was merely a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .223/5.56mm. No more deadly than any other rifle chambered for that cartridge.

Rebecca, nice to meet you. To answer your question, the economy may require both parents to work but doesn't absolve them of their responsibility to still be parents and is no excuse for what so many kids today grow up to be.

Berengaria, the disconnect starts when parents quit being parents and let TV and the internet be babysitters. We've got kids now who have no respect for parents or anything else. They can't even form a coherent sentence without at least two spelling errors and their sense of right and wrong is based on their time spent playing video games.
