I graduated in 1970. I was being quizzed and laughed at by that time as well. There was only one other JW in school at the time and apparently he had told some people that armageddon was coming in '75. I know I was too embarrassed to say anything about it.

To ALL Jw's and Lurkers!
by VeniceIT ini've noticed several posts the last few days slamming people with different beliefs.
now i enjoy a good debate but i think this is something that you who claim to believe or follow the teachings of the wts should keep in mind.
now i will only be using scriptures so you need not worry!.

How does one become a JW???
by Downdog01 inevery source i've looked at is very vague and my witness friends just keep encouraging me to stop asking questions and come to meetings.
my sense is, since i disagree so much with jw doctrine and the way it is presented in awake and especially watchtower that i'd never make it as a jw.
still i am curious what the process is and what "tests" if any one must pass.. any info will be much appreciated.. thanks,.

In a nutshell you will have to submit to a home bible study which will indoctrinate you on JW teachings. You will be required to be regular in attendance at meetings and will eventually have to engage in the public or door to door ministry. Once you have expressed a desire to be baptized, you will have to be questioned by the elders. There is a long list of questions that you will be required to respond to. If they are satisified with your answers, you will be allowed to be baptized. Than they have you.

Noah drama from a while ago
by betweenworlds indoes anyone else out there remember a drama from quite a few years ago that portrayed noah trying to preach to people about the flood, and he had a friend that wasn't doing all that he should in helping noah, and at the end of the drama the friend gets locked out of the ark and drowned???
i remember at the time, sitting there and thinking...what in the holy hell is this crap?
now they are making people up??

Yeah, I remember that drama as well! I had the same response you did, wondering where that character came from. Since we are in the remembering mode....and this goes way back!!...As a youngster...early teens...at an assembly...I remember a brother holding up one of the green bibles and saying.."If the Society tells me that this bible is black..I am going to say...You know, I thought this bible was green....but now that I look at it, in fact it IS black!" His point being that we should accept whatever we are told, even if it doesn't make sense. Even then I remember thinking, this is crazy!!

Who Are the Wicked?
by TMS inlyrics that float through my head at idle moments accompanied by my off-key singing:.
"they know such won't get life eternal.
but will like green grass fade and die".

A man died and went to heaven. Upon arriving at the pearly gates, Saint Peter was there to give him the tour. As he was being shown around he noticed a high brick wall that stretched as far as he could see and was too high to see over. His curiosity overwhelming him he finally inquired of Saint Peter: "What is behind the wall?" Saint Peter immediately shushed him and whispered: "Those are Jehovah's Witnesses. They believe they are the only ones here.":)

Answered prayers
by Oldhippie inlooking back over many years of prayers, i cannot pinpoint any time when i felt, unequivocally, that i had received a personal response to my prayers.
can anyone here relate any experiences where you have felt that god answered prayers for you?

I really appreciate everyones responses. Each of us here seems to have our own perception about what has taken place in our lives and how God may or may not fit into them. I am goin' on 50 years old. My older sister and I were raised in "the truth". After fighting chronic depression for many years my sister committed suicide 3 years ago. I spent a lot of time with her before she died praying and asking God to help her overcome the depression. I find it hard to pray now. Jesus used the illustration about a loving father, saying that if his son asked for a fish, he would not hand him a serpent. I guess that at this point, I need a "burning bush" to really get my attention.

What about the scriptural obligation to preach?
by lookingnow22 ini've always been taught that each disciple of christ has a scriptural obligation to preach, and to do so in imitation of jesus and his disciples.
they did this by house to house, in synagogues, and in the marketplaces.
this is one thing that has always kept me close to jehovah's witnesses.

At Acts 5:42 and 20:20 the NWT renders the Greek phrase as "from house to house". If you have a 'Kingdom Interlinear Translation', compare the rendering of the same Greek phrase at Acts 2:46 as "in private homes". If you have a copy of the large edition NWT look also at the footnote for Acts 20:20. The footnote for Acts 5:42 would seem to give weight to the phrase "from house to house".
One thing is clear, the apostles and early Christians visited people in their private homes. That they engaged in door to door activity as done by JW's today is not clear.
Of the 150 separate incidents of witnessing recorded in the Gospel accounts and Acts only 34 include any reference to house or home. Of these, 21 refer to homes where Jesus or the Apostles lodged or were invited to have a meal, 7 refer to lodging or a place for gathering such as congregations in homes, and 2 relate to Jesus sending healed persons to their homes. The other 4 are texts the Society uses to establish precendent for door to door activity.
Other uses of the Greek phrase are:
Romans 16:5
1 Corinthians 16:19
Colossians 4:15

How to Leave WT and Intact
by JT inone of the most painful things i continue to see here on this forum as well as all the others is that many who want to leave wt simply don't know how to leave and remain "intact" as it were.. i recall talking with jw who "formally disassociated themselves back in the 70s and it was not till the 90s and the net did they finally feel free.
or many who jump up and write a letter off to mo larry and curly (congregation service committee).
while i feel there is absolutely nothing wrong with writing a letter for many it is a matter of.

OrangeBlossom...So how do you handle the shepherding calls? If you tell them what is really on your mind, you open yourself up to a potentially nasty inquisition.

I was the congregation accounts servant when we built our quickly built hall approximately 5 years ago. The Society had OK'd us for a loan of about 100k. The final tally for the completed hall was about 77k. That did not include price of the land as that was donated. The Society reworked our loan to 77k, thus reducing our monthly payment. Except for reimbursing some brothers for personal expenses, which were minor, all of the bills I paid were for various vendors, some brothers, some not. I never saw anything that looked suspicious or out of line. Many of the vendors gave discounts. I would imagine that in many areas, the cost of the land could be more than the cost of the building.
Just my own observations.
