I have a big problem with the T-shirt. The man should sit in front of a computer, not the TV.

Is the Watchtower shy about repeating their new "generation" teaching?
by slimboyfat inas i recall in the 1980s talks and watchtower literature, magazines and books were always talking about the "generation" teaching and how it proved armageddon was going to come any day now.. but am i correct in thinking they have only actually mentioned the new "overlapping generations" teaching once or twice in the literature?
why are they so shy about talking about their great new interpretation?
it's almost enough to make you suspect they are a embarrassed about it.. mention it once or twice, don't dwell on it, hope everyone just accepts it, and don't bring it up again.

Slimboyfat, you are allowed research, however, only from WT publications. Problem with the NWT, it is based on Westcott & Hort (1881), and the BHK (1973). The NWTRef (1984) is their last revision. A lot have happened in the mean time. The DSS have been made available in their entirety, the Greek papyri have been discovered in Egypt. Nestle-Aland is on its 27th edition, the United Bible Society's Greek text is on its 4th edition. In connection with the Hebrew Scriptures there is the Jerusalem Project, BHQuinta, all with their different scholarly approaches. Then there is thousands of new articles coming out in periodicals and magazines. How on earth are you going to keep up to date with all this research if you haven't a degree or two behind your name? They should have had a specialized team to keep up to date on the latest research, e.g., the Mormons. No, I think they have lost the storyline altogether because of their unreasonable expectations. Now the world is passing them by.

Well, there's Djeggnog, and then there's Letters and numbers. But with the GB latest explanations, and pronouncements against Higher Learning, most apologists worth their salt will keep a low profile.

Slimboyfat, no, he gave up. Somebody said he has retired. Or the Society has muzzled him. He was quite outspoken about a few things the Society would have frowned upon. Who knows, he might be "fading," if he knows what's good for him.

Djeggnog, attempting to defend the indefensible, as usual. Many have tried, but they have failed. Here specifically Rolf Furuli comes to mind. With interest I always followed his threads in b-Hebrew and b-Greek, always to see him running into a brick wall of scholarly dissent, trying to defend the indefensible, i.e., the Society.
Face the facts, writer of the Awake!-mag. article told a Whopper (of a lie). They did not call it a hypothetical statement, they called it a "fact". "all the evidence ... indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years." That's Whopper, no. 2, in other words, another lie. How do I know it's a lie? The system did not end in a few years. But then, there is a question as to the meaning of the word "few"? It could mean a 100 years or it could mean 1 or 2. Perhaps it is also an overlapping "few". Then it could mean two hundred years.
Google has a translation service. You should think seriously of starting your own translation service. You can translate to us mere mortals what the literature is trying to say. Obviously the rest of us have it wrong. This remind me of the mother watching her son in a marching band. She says proudly: "Look my son is in step, all the others are out of step."
You're right. The conjunction "if" is conditional, in connection with being a young person (you might be an old person, then the sentence does not apply to you - then you might be dead soon). But according to your analysis, the force of this conjunction is such that it turns the rest of the sentence into a hypothetical sentence. This "if" is incredible. It sounds like the Hebrew Waw, having the force to turn the tense around. Where did you say you studied?
PS Follow the trend. Shrinking WT, shrinking printing organization, shrinking resources. I think you should economize and use less words to state your case. It'll save time, and your readership will be eternally grateful.

Has ANYONE married someone who is not a jw and been/is happy????
by MsGrowingGirl20 inwe were taught that this is detrimental and would only end in doom and gloom...is it true??.
are you happy or know someone who is??
do you regret it?.

I have been "married in the Lord" and "divorced in the Lord," so either way, there is no guarantee of happiness. I think it would help if you and your potential mate have a lot of things in common. It must be about more than beauty and sex. Over time these things become less important. My five cents worth.

In the "Great Quotes" thread Razziel's grandmother said something profound. I dedicate this quote to Djeggnog (with Razziel's permission of course): "If you keep on shitting in a circle, you will eventually step in it."

Black sheep, I believe he is referring to me with those words. Allow me to take up the slack.
Eggy, we have been discussing “generation” and in your explanation you include the term “contemporaries”. That’s why I gave you the dictionary definition of “contemporary” so that there is no misunderstanding. And I quote:
Our new interpretation of Matthew 24:34 isn't about overlapping generations, but is about contemporaries of a particular event, and the event began with the composite sign of Christ's presence in 1914. We now understand that this event -- the composite sign -- marks the beginning of the "generation" to which Jesus refers at Matthew 24:34, so we no longer apply Jesus' use of generation to people, since these would be contemporaries of one another during the "generation of the sign." The lives of some of the older ones during this generation of the sign would overlap the lives of some of the younger ones during this generation of the sign. Again, there aren't really two groups, the "older" group and the "younger" group, but here's another hypothetical:
Then you explain your theory with the following illustration:
Imagine a three-day convention and I have two parts to give on Days 1 and 2 at the Dallas Convention and two parts to give elsewhere on Day 3. You have two parts to give elsewhere on Day 1 and two parts to give on Days 2 and 3 at the Dallas Convention. You and I are contemporaries at the Dallas Convention on Day 2 even though I was there when it began on Day 1 and you were there when it ended on Day 3. The Dallas Convention represents "the generation of the sign," so that while I was there when it began, you were there when it ended and our lives overlapped at the Convention on Day 2, making the two of us contemporaries there.
I see you also use the word “overlap”. It gets easier on the ear, the more one uses it. But really Eggy, you will not even get away with this illustration in your TMS. Let’s face it, this is not a good illustration of explaining JWs stance of “this generation”. Two overlapping lives at a convention? Come on now, admit it, it is not fitting, using a three day convention to explain a generation of 50-100 years. I am sure you can do better than that. If you don’t believe me, why don’t you go and ask one of the elders at your cong. whether the illustration works or not.

CRAZINESS!!! I'M BEING 'MARKED' FOR GOING TO COLLEGE!!!
by MsGrowingGirl20 inohmygosh!!!

MSGG20, I did say it, and I do say it again. This is what it means to be a "leper" and be treated as such. The cong. will view this as a go-ahead for pre-emptive shunning. They will avoid you (and your family) socially. This is not a prophecy, this is a fact. Been there, done that. View this as your first badge of honor.
