No. I hate smoke around me, I also hate people who fart near me at work. But disfellowship for it, is going WAY beyond what was written.

Should Smoking Be a Mortal Sin?
by skeeter1 injdubs hang their hat on the fact that the wts was right about not smoking.
(the jdubs forget that the wts did not get it right on vaccinations or organ transplants...but that's for another post).
granted, saying "no" to smoke was a good, healthy decision.

What's The Biggest Difference In Today's JWs And The Witnesses From Decades Ago?
by minimus ini believe today's witnesses lack zeal, resolve, "love" of the "truth"......just to name a few things.. years ago, witnesses were excited to knock on doors and tell people they were gonna die if they didn't accept paradise.. now, when you see jws in service, they all look zombied out.. it's a slowly dying religion that will last probably forever like an ancient rotted out tree..

Hi Aristeas,
"Overall, the comments indicate the natural outcome of allowing joyless Jaraczic thinking to ruleāas indeed it does, even to the point of the Service Department eclipsing the Writing Department, with their own HQ up in Patterson and, of course, Jaracz hand picking all the GB successors."
Getting off the thread a bit, but was the deal with the change in Jaracziz (sp) ? The Mrs and I knew him as a CO and DO. He was always a welcome guest at our families and relatives homes..and a personal friend to many. Warm smile, liked a good Scotch. Friendly to kids. His wife a sweet lady. By the 70s he was stern and becomming cranky. In the 80s it sounds like he became mean spirited especially with Ray Franz who shared many friends. Any insight from anyone?

"Hospitality"?
by NCO inhad to meet my parents not too long ago for some family business and while working out the time for that sunday, they said they had the meeting and then following the meeting they had "hospitality" for an hour or so.. now i've been out for going on 20 years and somewhat out of the loop.
needless to say i've never heard of that.
i've been to other churches where they have the sanctuary and then the fellowship hall where the members go and eat after the service.

When I lived in a metro area we didn't have the hospitality arrangement, most speakers lived 10 minutes away. When we moved to a rural area, some speakers traveled 1-2 hours to a congregation within the circuit. Some congregations have no restaurants nearby, so frequently a bookstudy would have a potluck arrangement after the meeting, it was the only way a visiting speaker would have ANY meal.
It was also a great way to meet singles in rural areas. The speaker and his wife would brings along a single person. The single doesn't feel as conspicuous and they have a free ride, meal, and meet and great at a distant hall.
I filled in a couple of times last minute, the day after a mouthy abusive Elder with a big family was removed. I was not expected, and I found out NOT everyone is invited to hospitality....we had to find an open Burger King before driving home for 1 1/2 hrs.
Pleasant experience at most halls. Some halls in hillbilly land..not so much....

I agree Dozy,
I honestly can't remember the last person who was baptised who wasn't a child of a JW or had some other family connection (other than an occasional social misfit who had been contacted in the ministry). http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=43578 - Contrast that with the early 60's...a video that also illustrates many of the points made by earlier posters about the fun times as assemblies & meetings in the past.
Great newsreel!
Much of the US west coast growth has been in the Spanish Halls. Most of the new converts are uneducated with no access to the internet.

LeavingWT,
Wow. Very well researched and written letter. Thanks EVERYONE for bringing this letter to our attention.
It is tragic that some of these points were brought up at Bethel in the 70s, (the Kosher view) by some GB members, and Gilead instructors and voted down. As a result more died. Their bloodguilt is huge.

These comments are a blast from the past.............
I remember listening to the adults in the 60s..cocktail in hand "speculating". - That kind of talk would have the entire group disfellowshipped today.
Old timers would openly say Rutherford was an "Ass" and openly make fun of the "Society's" old light..these were Gilead grads and Congregation servants! Today they would be "Apostates"! Knorr was liked but considered a proud but "imperfect man". Franz was liked but considered "Kooky" and people would openly roll their eyes about his writting style, long prayers and "flip flops".
We had props at the hall for demonstrations. Aprons, beards, robes, telephones, fishing poles, burlap Kafkans. Everyone laughed and enjoyed the meetings.
Congregation ballgames, bike rides, beach cookouts, ski trips, fishing trips.
Smoke breaks intermission at the Sunday meeting!! -For the "weak".
The real old timmers actually used bible concordances!
Funny group of old ex- bohemians. A lot of old "almost communist" union organizers. Cops. School teachers. Business men. Liberal Jews. Veterans. - Witnesses were ANTI big religion and top down control like the evil CATHOLICS- They enventually became what they protested about.... "Religion is a snare and a racket, serve God and Christ today!.
