In Texas it is a crime not to report child abuse of any sort. It applies to everyone.

Why the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society BAN against Peace Officers serving as "Elders " for Jehovah's Witnesses ?
by Balaamsass inin the early 80s the watchtower society began to forbid any police officer from serving as a ministerial servant, elder or even viewed as "exemplary".
at the time i was told it was because of firearms, possible bloodguilt, and being men of violence- "smiters".. as a young person it just didn't make sense to me.
i knew and liked a few peace officers who served as elders.

Oh those Thor-worshippers and their hammers . . . .
by cedars inas i've said many times on this forum, the fictional character of thor is a dangerous and violent person who clearly does not know how to handle a hammer safely or responsibly.. to set the record straight, here is an instructional video on how to use a hammer safely.. i feel it's important to spread this information in order to raise awareness that hammers are intended as tools for making things, and not as weapons with which to bludgeon your foes to death.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5ogimmz8uw.

Sparlock worked his magic this weekend!
by 00DAD inyes it's true, i got to experience first hand the awesome magic powers of sparlock, the warrior wizard!tm.
this last weekend a friend of mine asked me if i could take him to the mechanic's to pick up his car after being serviced.
now this friend of mine (who is not and has never been a jw) is the the one and only friend that i've remained in constant contact with through the dark quarter century of my life when i was a witness.

According to Caleb, Sparlock does not "work his magic". Caleb tells us that Sparlock "activates" his magic.
I want to wear the t-shirt and tell Witnesses, "Sparlock, active your magic!"

Remember: With Jehovah's Witnesses it is never about truth. It's always about "The Truth". Jehovah's Witnesses do not worship a god. They worship a publishing corporation known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, INC. As a god is infallible, so is the corporation.

Candace Conti - Preparing For The Appeal
by Joe Grundy inno doubt, wtbts ny will appeal this to the best of their ability, and they have almost unlimited financial resources behind them.. i wish i was in a position to fund candace through the appeal, but i'm not, nor i am cognisant with california law or the general fedaral law in us.. but i was a police officer in the uk for 30 years, 10 of that as a commander of a fraud squad, member of the national working group on fraud, europol, etc.
i did spend some time in the us working with fbi on a joint case.. my point is this.
i've read through some of the court papers including depositions and the one that stuck in my mind was the dep taken from the witness who worked in bethel and was asked about 'collated data' re child abusers.

I've been in law enforcement for 14+ years, now, and the first 7 of those were as an active Jehovah's Witness. I witnessed first hand elders dodging investigators of child abuse and subpoenas to testify in trial. It pissed me off then and was one of the many reasons I got out.
What one must comprehend is what an appeal really is. It is not a new trial. Here's the steps in the appeals process:
1) Which ever party lost the case (Plaintiff or Defendant) files the appeal with the next higher court, usually a court of appeals.
2) The party appealing files a "brief", which is a misnomer. A brief is basically, for lack of a better term, an essay outlining why the decision should be overturned.
3) An appeal must be based on the law and not the facts of the case. An appeal is an allegation against the judge of the court that heard the case. The allegation is that evidence from the losing party should have been admitted and was not or evidence that was admitted by the opposing party was admitted and should not have been.
4) The appeals court will review the brief and any statutory law or caselaw the party appealing refers to.
5) The appeals court will review the trial transcripts and the exhibits entered as evidence.
6) The appeals court will may a ruling based on 4 & 5 as well as additional caselaw that is relevant.

Approximately 9,000 years ago in the part of the world we now call "Turkey" marriage was invented. It was created to ensure that a man's property and wealth was passed to a legitimate male heir as women were not allowed to possess property. This is inferred by several parts of the 10 Commandments.
To further this line of thought, marriage is a legal status given through a license issued by the government. A marriage is terminated through a legal process in the courts that divides property and wealth gathered during the marriage. A wedding is just a ceremony that may be either a spiritual or secular. Even the government can perform the ceremony.

WTBS and Appealing a Civil Judgement
by truth_b_known inin light of the candice conti civil trial against the wtbs and the pro-jehovah's witness/apologist comments posted on various news websites, i thought i would give a simplified explanaition of what is involved in appealing the outcome of a trial in the courts of the united states.. a trial, whether criminal or civil, usually ends with a verdict rendered by a jury.
in a criminal case the verdict is guilty or not guilty.
that same jury may decide the punishment in the event of a guilty verdict.. in a civil case a jury must decide based on the evidence whether the defendant is guilty of damaging the plaintiff.

In light of the Candice Conti civil trial against the WTBS and the pro-Jehovah's Witness/Apologist comments posted on various news websites, I thought I would give a simplified explanaition of what is involved in appealing the outcome of a trial in the courts of the United States.
A trial, whether criminal or civil, usually ends with a verdict rendered by a jury. In a criminal case the verdict is Guilty or Not Guilty. That same jury may decide the punishment in the event of a Guilty verdict.
In a civil case a jury must decide based on the evidence whether the Defendant is guilty of damaging the plaintiff. As in a criminal case, the jury may also decide what damages the Defendant must pay the Plaintiff and, depending on the case, whether or not the Defendant must pay any punitive damages. Punitive damages are usually ordered in cases where the Plaintiff proved malice on the part of the Defendant. That is to say, the Defendant did what they were accused of and that they knew it was wrong.
An Appeal is a request by the losing party in a case to a higher court for the purpose of having the lower court's decision overturned. The end result comes in one of three possibilities: 1) the higher court grants the Appeal and the decision is reversed and the case is disposed of or 2) the higher court grants the Appeal and a new trial is ordered or 3) the higher court denies the Appeal.
Appeals are usually based on the law and not on the facts of the case. A Judge is the judge of the law and the jury is the judge of the facts of a case. Appeals are usually based on the claim that the judge presiding over the case either sustained or overruled one of the party's objections in regards to evidence being admitted. Evidence either being witness testimony or exhibits.
The bottomline is this: An Appeal is basically the losing party complaining to a higher court that the jury would have ruled in their favor if the judge had either prohibitted certain evidence from being admitted or had allowed evidence to be admitted in accordance with statutory law or case law.
An Appeal is not a higher court ruling Guilt or innocence based on the facts of the case. Usually...

Thought Reform and the Psychology of the 'Safeguard Your Heart!' 2012 Convention
by breakfast of champions into make attendance at my second district convention "mentally out" both a little more bearable and meaningful, i decided to take some notes of key points as if i were an outsider studying the thought reform methods of jehovah's witnesses.
at first, i was only going to share these notes with my therapist, but inspired by the "parsing the watchtower double-speak" thread, i figured i would share my amateur analysis with everyone.
here are some of the highlights:.

What Place the 10 Commandments in Modern Society?
by AK - Jeff inthis is not my essay - but it mirrors my opinions on the matter.
the entire essay found here: http://www.ebonmusings.org/atheism/10c.html.
the key portion i wanted to share for those willing to think it about how the insistence of fundamental christians demanding the posting of this jewish decalog widely within our government institutions and schools, is both foolish and oppositionary to the very principles they claim to uphold.. first commandment: "thou shalt have no other gods before me.

The 6th commandment is actually: Thou shall not murder. The difference is that murder is an unlawful act whereas there may be a lawful reason to kill a person. There are even laws in the Mosiac Law that further this and we seem them mirrored in our modern laws.
The 7th commandment is directly related to the real reason marriage was even created: property rights. Prior to currency, wealth was measured in land and livestock. Women were prohibited from owning property. Therefore, it was important for men to produce a legitimate male heir to pass his wealth on to. Sleeping around and producing multiple male heirs with multiple women presents a huge problem.
The 10th commandment: See "The 7th commandment".
Commandments 1-4 are all BS as they, like all religions, are just a tool to control the masses.
