I remember how Harry Potter was the Sparlock of my time. Yet everyone in the congregation was lining up to see all the Lord of the Rings movies. My wife could not understand that. This is so typical of the religion.

Sparlock is making his rounds again
by stillin ini was at the meeting last night and the dreadful video about caleb and sparlock was forced upon the audience.
honestly, i had forgotten how bad it was.
the mother's manipulative over-reaction and caleb's acceptance that his toy was evil.

Refuting Watchtarded Reasoning - 1. "If a doctor tells you to abstain from alcohol, you wouldn't inject it..."
by Island Man ini'm hoping to start a series of posts refuting common, fallacious jw reasoning that they repeat to support their teachings or defend their organization.
in this first installment i will be tackling the common fallacious analogy used by them to equate eating blood with receiving a transfusion.
feel free to share your own refutations on each thread.. "if a doctor tells you to abstain from alcohol you wouldn't go injecting it into your veins, would you?".

I also thought that when Paul penned the words "Keep abstaining from blood" the word "blood" was the same word as "murder". In other words - Refrain from murder (being blood guilty).

"would you drink a glass of water if it had just a tiny bit of poison in it?"
by stuckinarut2 inno doubt we have all heard that well used "illustration" in public talks etc over the years:.
"if you were handed a glass of water that looked pure, but were told it has just a tiny drop of poison in it, would you drink it?".
the society has used that illustration at length to say we should avoid all influences of every part of the world.. but, as we know, the society has had a track record of errors, false ideas and doctrines.

If that were truly the case Jehovah's Witnesses would not be using the pagan practice of wearing wedding bands, bridesmaids in weddings, and the bride wearing a white dress.
That's just one example of a "tiny drop of poison" that Witnesses have no problem digesting.

most of us are immigrants.

Those aren't immigrants. They are illegal aliens. My grandparents are the children of immigrants of Germans and Russians who came to the United States through Ellis Island, learned to speak English, and fought for our nation against their former homeland.

Why the need for 144000 imperfect humans to Rule with Christ Jesus for 1000 years ? Is he incapable of ruling by himself ?
by smiddy indoes this make any sense whatsoever ?

My father, who claims to be of the annointed, told me that the reason for taking 144,000 humans and making them rulers over the earth is nothing more than tea-bagging Satan. Satan, an angel, wanted that. So it's just a big "eff you" to Satan from Jehovah.

What finally helped you to peek behind the curtain
by UnshackleTheChains ini'm interested in finding out what it was that finally enabled you to open your eyes to the real truth of watchtower.
what started me thinking, was the societys very own book...' 'revelation..it's grand climax at hand'.
i found that book farcicle.

I love the question and all the responses. I have a hard time determining what my "A-HA!" moment was.
Background - I was born in to a father was professes to be of the annointed and was presiding overseer. That was until we moved to another state and he was treated like a heretic.
I was appointed a Ministerial Servant at 19 and had every privilege one could be given as such. It was at this point I had my first real doubt.
1. I was working at a Circuit Assembly in the Accounts Department. We had a talk in which a major teaching flip-flopped. The original teaching was that brothers could not accept alternative non-military service when drafted. The new teaching was that you could. Many of the brothers in our circuit lived and worked in a major university city. They were young men during the Vietnam War and new many brothers who went to prison because they refused military service AND non-military compulsory service. One brother was told by the draft board he could work at the post office in lieu of military service. I saw how this impacted these brothers and it effected me deeply.
2. Out of college I got a job with a local police department in a non-sworn (no firearm) position. I was assigned to assist our detectives. One detective was in charge of child crimes. A brother in the local congregation was accused of molesting a child in that congregation. I saw first hand how these elders refused to cooperate and dodged subpoena service so they would not have to testify. That was a huge eye opener.
3. Years later I took a job that caused me to miss most meetings and field service was almost existent. I went with my parents to the District Convention. On they way home after the last day my father and I were sharing favorite memories of being a Witness in our home state. Then my dad dropped a bomb on me - he said there was a circuit overseer there that was targeting brothers who professed to be of the annointed for disfellowshipping. My dad was certain that if we had not moved he would have been next.
4. A few year after that I moved to another state. Shortly there after I was completely inactive. I worked a graveyard shift job and was reading a book a work week. I read a book about Mars and the evidence that supports that Mars may have had life millions of years ago. That lead me to read other things science related. The big science related fact I soon learned was that the global flood described in Genesis could not have happened.
5. I went to the police academy. It was there that we discussed using deadly force. The instructor shared Romans 13:1-7 and said that it was referred to as the "Police Officer Scripture" by leaders of many christian faiths. I also learned that "Thou Shall Not Kill" is actually "Thou Shall Not Murder" and how other Mosaic Law scriptures proved this. I had denied myself a career in law enforcement for over 15 years because I was taught Witnesses could not carrying weapons to defend themselves or others.
6. The final nail in the coffin was simply attending my final Memorial. My father would call me every years an encourage me to go. He told me it was important to make this one. The first thing I experienced was embarrassment in attending. The new song book had been released and I had no clue. Second thing I noticed was that it was the exact same outline used every year for every Memorial I had ever attended. The next day at work I visited this website for the first time. That was all it took. I was done for good.

What did you regrettably not do because you were a Jehovah's Witness ?
by minimus injehovah's witnesses cannot do a lot of things.
i remember pioneers having to quit their jobs because they could not work in a convenience store and sell cigarettes.
i know of a young man who was offered a scholarship to any college or university if he wanted to go to because of his football abilities.

Two things -
1) I took the ASVAB test when I was a senior just to see what my results were. I scored in the 90 percentile in all areas. All 4 branches of the military were hounding me, but especially the Navy. They Navy wanted me to go into their nuclear program. I was guaranteed to make E3 6 months after basic.
2) I put myself through college about 4 years after high school. Right out of college I took a non-sworn job with a city police department. I always wanted to be in law enforcement. My police chief wanted to hire me as a police officer and would have paid to put me through the academy. If I had done that then I would be Chief of Police now. Instead I am 10 years behind.

Why does God allow animals to suffer? Does God care about animals? What does the Watchtower teach about this?
by defender of truth inthe following article will address these questions, and attempt to answer them.. after helping jwfacts with his page on animal suffering, i decided to write this article.. it is mainly aimed at helping jehovahs witnesses and other believers in god to think about the issue, as well as the apparent contradictions in watchtower teaching.. thanks must go to jwfacts for the encouragement, and giving me permission to use an image from his page and to use some of the quotes.. also, thankyou to cofty for general moral support.. please let me know what you think everybody, and feel free to reproduce any part or all of the article on any other website, just post and let me know that you've used it on your site please.. (i'd appreciate it if anyone could post to tell me they found a point in here useful, it would encourage me to keep going).. okay, here it is:.
why does god allow animal suffering?.
does it trouble you to see animals in pain?.

Animals are born with defects, get diseases, grow old, and eventually die = Perfect creation by Jehovah
Humans are born with defects, get diseases, grow old, and eventually die = All due to imperfection because of Adamic sin
Does anyone else see a problem with this logic?

Thoughts on African Americans and Slavery
by Simon inlet's start by saying that slavery is of course a terrible thing, one of the worst crimes imaginable, and that "slavery" rarely implies good treatment, anything noble or defensible.
nowadays, even god doesn't escape judgement from our enlightened views with passages about slavery in the bible usually glossed over because they are shameful.. but not all slavery was equal.. because of the media, movie industry, racial tensions in the us regularly shown on the news and our taught history, i think most people's knowledge and idea of slavery is that of the north atlantic slave trade where white people took africans to work in cotton fields.
this idea is probably also re-enforced because the largest group of descendents of slaves we see today are african americans (usually in the us or places they subsequently migrated to).. but it's incomplete.. it's only when you look into it more that you discover that there was much more to the slave trade than that, otherwise it would have been just called "the slave trade" and not "the north atlantic slave trade".. some 12.5 million slaves were taken from africa to the us with just under 11 million surviving the trip so it obviously took a terrible toll immediately, even before any maltreatment once they landed in the americas where conditions and treatment were truly awful.

I believe it was brought up during the last summer Olympics that Brazil had the highest number of African slaves.

Occupations that will disappear
by joker inwhile growing up in the cult one thing that always bothered me was the way witnesses could forecast jobs/occupations that we're going to vanish in their new world.. for example, we would usually discuss at saturday night wt studies how doctors, nurses, funeral directors, and soldiers would go the way of the dodo.
i always found discussions like that just so strange.. in hs, i mounted an unsuccessful effort to enter veterinary sciences, the big answer was always "why" it won't be needed after armageddon 😝😜.
does anyone have their own story about professions that the witnesses believe will not be needed after the big a ?.

I remember one brother who would get angry when people would say that medical practitioners would not be needed in the "New World". He would say, "I guess when you fall and break your leg your bone will magically set itself."
The perception of what perfection is in the minds of most Witnesses is down right nutty buckets. As a child my father once asked me during our Bible study "If Adam and Eve were perfect, free from sin, how were they able to disobey Jehovah?" The question stumped me. Perfect just means free from defect. You don't become like Wolverine with mutant healing abilities. You don't magically have the knowledge of the universe downloaded into your head. The work of your hands isn't with out flaw.
