Did Church fathers and Jesus see the Bible as metaphor?
by leavingwt indoes anyone here believe that jesus viewed genesis as being a metaphor?
if they believed it to be a historical account about real people, what are the implications?
as a jw, i wasn't allowed to publicly entertain such questions.

"These things are an allegory: the women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, which gives birth to slave children; this is Hagar. "--Galatians 4:24
"The Law is a shadow of the good things that are coming, not the real things themselves."--Hebrews 10:1
"Whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction so that we could have hope through endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures."--Romans 15:4
I don't believe Paul, Philo, Origen, even Augustine took everything literally, especially the Creation accounts. These were viewed as allegorical, prophetical, or as parables from which moral lessons can be derived.

How BITE applies to non-Witness groups
by Londo111 ini am trying to compile information of how the bite system applies to groups other than the witnesses.
this will help witnesses consider the bite model in a non-threatening manner, because it applies to the 'other guy' and along the way they will see, hopefully, how it applies to their group.. .
for starters today, i found this link interesting.

What a shame - but fortunate for the org
by Mickey mouse inas referred to in this thread, ray franz's book crisis of conscience, arguably the most important book for ex jws to read - has been out of print for months but is available from amazon at $100+.. internet explorer, probably the most commonly used internet browser - is not compatible with this website.. most young jws probably access the internet via a smartphone but good luck trying to post to this website on one.. .

I have noticed that Brother Franz's books are noticeably absent from public libraries. On the other hand, the library I visited Saturday had 2 copies of the Proclaimers books. Hmm…

Strategically, the GB should accept 587
by I Want to Believe inright now, the 587/607 is a major weak link; doctrines can be argued in circles for days, but the overwhelming evidence for 587 is damning to their entire theology, and it can be found with very little effort.
however, if they just bite the bullet and "new light" a 587 date for jerusalem's destruction it solves a lot of their problems:.
-removes their main weak secular point of argument.

Since exiting the Witnesses have you Become More " Spiritual " ? - Not ........
by flipper in..... necessarily more religious, but more spiritual in a non-religious way ?
although being religious is one of the definitions os " spiritual " it encompasses much more in the webster's new world dictionary , under the word spiritual it's definition is : " 1. of the spirit or the soul as distinguished from the body or material matters 2. of, from, or concerned with the intellect ; intellectual 3. of or consisting of spirit ; not corporeal 4. characterized by the ascendancy of the spirit ; showing much refinement of thought and feeling 5. of religion or the church ; sacred, devotional, or ecclesiastical ; not lay or temporal 6. spiritualistic or supernatural .
quite a variety of definitions !

I believe being outside the straightjacket of Witness theology has allowed me to love God for the first time and build a more mature understanding of the Bible.

Steven Unthanks case . . . this might help fill some gaps.
by sizemik ini was alerted to steven unthanks latest feature article on jwnews.net .
.. it was posted just a few days ago (11th) and explains a number of things some have puzzled over with regard to australian law, and why things unfolded as they did.. it includes a report compiled by an ex-jw who attended the hearings.. for those that took an interest in the case .
it might fill in some gaps for you.. it's on the home page and entitled .

Usually, the Society's tactic is not to mention something, and let it die down. They rarely, rarely refute anything specific. Of course, they cannot. However if this got out and they were forced to comment on it, likely they would say, "Some, in the past, have presented the Faithful and Discreet Slave as a theological arrangement and even nonexistent. However, this refutes the words of Jesus found at…" They can easily disavow the content of whatever the legal team has said on the subject, while obscuring that is was their lawyers who said it. Thus, the Society always comes out triumphant.
I agree: religious organizations are given carte blanche freedom, often at the expense of religion/spiritual individuals. Such was the case of the Unthank case.

The Watchtowers Unholy Trinity
by Dogpatch inthe watchtowers unholy trinity .
most jehovahs witnesses believe that when the society appears to clearly designate a new doctrinal position on some issue, like blood transfusions, it is what they really follow and believe.
such naivete is typical of those who have never worked in a large corporation.. .

These might well be the Denisovans...
Sounds intriguing. Hopefully this is not a Piltdown type fraud.
