An Old Argument.... does it hold water?
by AK - Jeff inestimates range from 4 million to 15 million children die from starvation each year on this planet.
that's between 500 and 1700 children a day, depending on what numbers you accept.
still, no matter which numbers you use, doesn't this make you arrive at one of the following conclusions?.

Pre 1914 Utopia?
by Flat_Accent inthinking back to all those talks i heard about the sign of the last days, one thing that many used as proof of christ's presence was the dramatic changes, socially and politically, which all began in 1914. in the reasoning book, a few quotes are listed:.
"looking back from the vantage point of the present we see clearly today that the outbreak of world war i ushered in a twentieth-century 'time of troubles'-in the expressive term of the british historian arnold toynbee-from which our civilization has by no means yet emerged.
directly or indirectly all the convulsions of the last half century stem back to 1914.

Directly or indirectly all the convulsions of the last half century stem back to 1914."-The Fall of the Dynasties: The Collapse ofthe Old Order (New York, 1963), Edmond Taylor, p. 16.
"People of the World War II generation, my generation, will always think of their conflict as the great modern watershed of change. . . . We should be allowed our vanity, our personal rendezvous with history. But we should know that, in social terms, a far more decisive change came with World War I. It was then that political and social systems, centuries in the building, came apart-sometimes in a matter of weeks. And others were permanently transformed. It was in World War I that the age-old certainties were lost . . . World War II continued, enlarged and affirmed this change. In social terms World War II was the last battle of World War I."-The Age of Uncertainty (Boston, 1977); John K. Galbraith, p. 133Watchtower's vision of the World before 1914 could be considered a utopia. But is that true? I know Russell and others had been preaching the 'End Times' since the 1850's, but what did secular historians or social commentators make of the time they lived in? Has anyone got some good quotes?

What has or would motivate you to attend an Ex-JW meet up...
by Tuesday ini just wanted to get a general consensus of what are the motivations to attend an ex-jw meet up.
if you've already attended one before, what motivated you the first time or each successive time?
if you've never attended an ex-jw meet up before what do you think could motivate you to attend one?.

Had to sit through 'Creation Reveals God's Glory'
by Flat_Accent inwith my parents last night.. i had seen the dvd before but there was an overall feeling of awkwardness when they played it this time.. they both came diving into the living room anxious to watch it, and though my mum usually gets emotional when things like this are brought up, she kept her cool and decided to lay down some "facts".
things like "we are living in the last days, and the anglo-american world power is the last one.
china will never be a world power.

free @ last: yeah it's included as an extra on the disc. It's in relation to the fibonacci sequence, and the numerical values are found in a lot of plants.

EntirelyPossible: Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. . .
dontplaceliterature: I do plan on reading that some time! At the moment I'm going through Dawkins' 'Greatest Show on Earth', a little stale in parts but still a decent read. It's more of a book about why evolution is possible, less about how we know it happened, though it does touch on fossil intermediates.
WTWizard: What the hell is Agenda 21+? Some kind of world-wide nuclear attack?

Then my avatar had the desired effect. Good to know.
And I'll be reading your comments in my mind with the voice of Tyler Durden
Evolution is such an amazing theory though, everything fits. What books/sites are you reading?

Do I have this straight? In the time of the end.....
by OnTheWayOut inin the time of the end, (great tribulation/armageddon/whatever) the activities of jehovah's witnesses would be severely increasing?
didn't they give the impression that they would have like 93% pioneers and be "studying" their literature with tons and tons of people who need to get into the organization before it's too late?
isn't it supposed to be a great army?.

I don't think it's quite like that. They use that scripture that says "the love of the greater number will cool off". My parents always use the uninterested people they meet as evidence the big A is near.
You're right about the anointed though, but that's been increasing on a yearly basis. I guess we're sticking around for a little while longer ;D

With my parents last night.
I had seen the dvd before but there was an overall feeling of awkwardness when they played it this time.
They both came diving into the living room anxious to watch it, and though my mum usually gets emotional when things like this are brought up, she kept her cool and decided to lay down some "facts". Things like "We are living in the last days, and the Anglo-American world power is the last one. China will never be a world power." (A show about China's economic and industrial prowess had just been on). "We'll see", I said. I didn't want to start an argument then but she was obviously looking for one. She was quick to add "And It's better to be in my position, because if I'm right I'll live forever, but if you're right it doesn't really affect me." Ahh, Paley's Watch! "And if the Muslims are right then we're all in trouble", but my dad was quick to counter "The Muslims aren't right."
The dvd went by quickly enough. There were a few things the scientists among us could probably pick at. I, for one, noticed everything was done from a very solipsistic point of view. Using comments like "Water has been perfectly designed to support life. Without water, we couldn't exist at all" as evidence that God cares. It's a really backwards way of looking at creation. God made the water before he made life, did he not? So humans were 'designed' to live off the water, not the other way around. I suppose this harmony in nature was an attempt at disproving evolution, but it couldn't even do that. The planet is 70% water, so evolution would favour animals that used water and other natural resources to survive. The same applies to the famous 'Golden Angle' but it's so obvious I don't need to go into it.
The saddest part was at the end though. I'm glad there was an encouragement to get away from the TV (albeit for silly reasons), and step outside, look at nature. But the real emphasis was on the New World, and all the nice things you'll be able to do once you get there. For shame.

I'm sure the WT claimed Christ's first punch up with Satan was October 1914. Don't know the quote, Blondie will probably have it.
But yes, WW1 started in July, after Franz Ferdinand released their single "The Dark of the Matinée" if memory serves me right.

Gluten-free sounds hard. No bread, no beer?? Don't know if I could do that, I like my sammiches and my stout. xD Glad it's working for you guys though!
As for sugars, I keep away from trans-fats, eating less overall, and that's working for me. Trans-fat is the stuff they put in digestive biscuits and all those other delicious things, made from vegetable oil and not good for you at all! It cannot be processed by your body so it is stored and harder to get rid of. Saturated fats are much better because they are taken naturally from the animal. Plain sugary stuff is okay for me, infact, on days where I've eaten more sugary stuff, I've lost more weight.
I've been dieting like this on and off for the last 2 years, but when I was actively working to lose weight I lost around 42lbs in that time. I've started again this year to get down to a decent Body fat %age and lost another 6lbs in four weeks.
