That rings so true, that the Bible itself and religion in general does not hold up to the critical examination the WTS fails.
My field of inquiry since leaving borg is evolution, history, mythology, etc. Things "good jws" have to leave alone for the most part because of the undermining effect these fields have on the wTS teachings and the Bible itself.

i have a question about restrictions on df'd persons wanting to come back to the org.. i finally joined here on mar 26, after reading posts for about a month, with telling my story first.
what moved me to join in was reading ozzie's post on mar.23(i think), about "restrictions" regarding reproofs, probations, and df'ing.
i appreciated his comments and was so glad when he brought the subject up.
Kudos to all of you who answered "Humble's" posts in such a calm polite manner. I have a lot of calming down to do. The posts were inflammatory IMO as you can see a good example of "adroitly twisting the scriptures" in that the prodigal son was a good verse, BUT....then no more scriptures, just the WTS baloney.

it is generally acknowledged, and confirmed by experience, that there is a significant gender imbalance in the organisation.. there are considerably more sisters than there are brothers.
that's great for the brothers, because a lot of the poor jw lasses get so desperate that even the most dorky of brothers can take his pick.. but why is there this imbalance?.

Good question and obviously true. It seems this is true in most religions, isn't it? Mark Twain made this observation in "Letters from the Earth" about men not liking to go to church, etc.
Reason may be that women, by their nature, and raising children, and being more emotional, may be inclined to want a spiritual reason to comfort them and explain the world to their children? Or, maybe because they are the weaker sex, they don't want to be so dependent on men and so have a father-figure god to rely on?

Good post--it helps to think past the paragraphs. I haven't read a magazine in quite a while as I don't trust myself to read with critical thinking skills. It will come with time, i hope.
Btw, did you know that technically it was incorrect to capitalize the pronoun "i"? But when copyists handwrote literature, it was too easy to lose the "i" due to its size, therefore, it was capitalized.

As for filling the void, I've often thought the local Unitarian church sounds nice. Belief in God is optional and there are many nice discussions for free thought and social activities.
But I'm not ready to be in anything religious. Only stopped meetings a month ago.
As far as being ath/agn, if there is no God, then the WTS is not so bad, just very controlling, but as is evidenced by its large following despite its being so difficult to follow, it is filling a "niche" in evolutionary terms. I walked into it with my eyes wide open. I just should have done more investigation and not been so gullible.

the watchtower teaches that the earth is old (in agreement with science), but that humankind is young (6,000 years as of 1975).
since they wish to have an old earth however, it is necessary to say that each day of creation is longer than an actual day- various figures are given i believe.. i believe i am correct in saying that the logical conclusion must be that animals existed for a long time prior to the events in the garden of eden and the sinning of human beings.

Genesis 1:30 states that green vegetation was given to ... every living creature on the earth.
Dinasours predated humans on the earth by almost every scientific account.
They were just as predatory as animals today. The predators did not eat green vegetation. Gen. 1:30 is wrong and part of a myth, as humans didn't know of dinasours' existence until recently, so the writer made up this fanciful nice way for the animals to exist that had nothing to do with reality.
The violence in nature fits an evolution model better than creation.
