  Etymology of Pakistan, et al.

  hi all you wordsmiths,.

  waiting (my younger sis with whom i'm visiting) and i were discussing the world crisis.

  a trivial question came up as to what the "stan" in afghanistan and pakistan and the ilk means.

  A further explanation of our questions (because my sister uses words I don't understand - and she's in the shower so I can type this without her seeing this.....{;)])

  Ho Chi Min Trail - A VietNam retired general was interviewed and he said that if the US had closed, barracaded, destroyed, this main road, it would have stopped the food supply to the VC army - thus stopping the non-named war. He said he never understood why the Americans didn't do that.

  Does anyone know? I could only think that it was because it was an un-disclosed war - and for some reason, this road wasn't closed?

  ps: I still don't know what "ilk" means - nor would I actually use *that* word. But I trust that she knows what's she's talking about........

  Waiting (my younger sis with whom I'm visiting) and I were discussing the world crisis. A trivial question came up as to what the "stan" in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the ilk means. I did a search and couldn't come up with anything. Any help?

  Also, the question came up from watching the History Channel why the US didn't obliterate the Ho Chi Minh Trail. A general asserted that had the US done that, it would have effectively shut down the war.

  Hi all,

  So nice to hear from so many new onew! Welcome! It's gratifying to know so many of us have gone thru the same processes.

  I wish I could just quit like you and your wife, Stephen. Then I could get some closure. Now, I'm stuck in the middle. I can't put up a Christmas tree, can't openly do Halloween with my grandkidlets, can't put up an American flag because of my neighbors.

  Why? Because of family that are still in. Although I believe one son is shunning me anyway, or at least has me marked. So, what's the point. But I do have another son and his two children to consider. They are all much more reasonable.

  I left in March of this year. It feels natural now. But I do not like the pretense of just being spiritually weak. Oh well, life is full of trade-offs, huh?

  A big hearty WELCOME!!! to all of you!

  Taliban not original--Moses 1st

  there are two christian young women from the u.s. who are imprisoned in afghanistan for trying to make converts.

  of course, it seems astonishing to folks here in the u.s.. it seems things have come full circle, because in the law of moses if someone came to you talking about another god besides jehovah, even your 'wife lying in your bosom,' you were to report them.

  Hi all,

  Thanks for the replies. Yeah, the whole atheist/religionist thing was not well thought out. I had just had a bit of a run-in with a religionist at work and she became emotional very fast and I dropped the whole thing.

  I meant to say "in a religious- evolution-atheist discussion," atheists seem to stay calmer.

  But looking back, I became emotional very fast too in a religious setting when my faith felt threatened.

  As far as the hidden motive for being nice, I don't know about all religions, but I still think it holds true for JWs in general, maybe not each individual.
  That's just my experience and opinion though. That the general 'spirit' is how to give the best witness (i.e., preach/make a convert). it is cynical, but I till think it's part of the JW mindset.

  It doesn't seem to me that atheists are generally kinder or that religionists can't be kind. It's just that the JW religionist usually wants to do some preaching someway if they can.

  Gweedo and Radar,
  The whole Taliban thing on imprisoning the two Christians was my main point. It's ironic that the book that Christians use contains the same intolerance that they're being endangered with. While it's tragic for the young women, it was also tragic for ones way back in Bible times.

  It's also ironic that the book that was religiously intolerant then later commands its adherents to go to where others may be just as religiously intolerant.

  There are two Christian young women from the U.S. who are imprisoned in Afghanistan for trying to make converts. Of course, it seems astonishing to folks here in the U.S.

  It seems things have come full circle, because in the law of Moses if someone came to you talking about another god besides Jehovah, even your 'wife lying in your bosom,' you were to report them. The punishment was death.

  So, the two Christians are being treated in the same way that the Bible prescribed long ago.

  This religious intolerance is sad, but not new.

  Also, ever notice how the religious people can become so angry and the atheists don't?

  Another thing, when a JW or other religious people do things for others, there's always a hidden agenda. The JW is trying to convert you and that's the motive for kindness, IMO. I know, been there and done that.

  some time back i was in the grocery store and met a person that i had studied with about 30 years ago.

  her husband is the pm or whatever they call it today in the congregation.

  her children are faithful jws also.

  as a witness what occupation did/do you hold?.

  i was speaking with a friend of mine that is a former witness and we remarked about how many of us have worked in some sort of janitorial work.

  Hi all,

  It's so nice to get to know a little bit more about everyone!

  When a dub, I worked in cleaning (hated it!) for a while, then 'den mother' for a bunch of paperboys part-time, then secretary, and am still an executive sec'y for an extraordinarily nice executive.

  Ironic, he's an atheist/evolutionist/ Unitarian and when I was a dub (up till 7 months ago) it was troubling as we often had discussions about evolution. He always seemed to win!

  But then, I had my 'aha!' moment about dinasours (another story), and went over to the other side.

  But I digress. A secretary I've been for about 15 years.
