  Witness calls to tell me UN is attacking the Catholic Church, it has begun!

  the poor thing is 86 and was told by a friend with "the internet" that the catholic church is being attacked by the un!

  the tribulation is at hand.

  well, if you consider a report on molestation coverups the end of religion, watch out wt, they are coming for you next.

  when February turns into March, April, May...2015, 2016, 2017... and still no great tribulation.

  I often wonder if a time will come - perhaps 10, 20, 30 or 40 (if i get there) years, where the people around me who are still JW's (friends , family) will finally allow themselves to start admitting that the organization doesn't know what they are talking about, or if otherwise they will buy into the new excuses which are still to come as to why the great tribulation has not started.

  I do firmly believe that in the coming years, something tragic of some magnitude will happen in the world which will cause the Org to claim the Great Tribulation has started. Once everything goes back to normal they will be forced to, yet again, eat their own words.

  I like this thread. It's a very good point.

  I does seem incredible that these 2 imaginary people with perfect minds and bodies are not able to follow simple directions. They had millions of trees to eat from and their little world was perfect. For all we know, they had 1 law to follow, and yet as simple as that is, they couldnt do it.

  When we take a step back and look at our world today with thousands of laws to follow and many more negative influences tempting us to break these laws, we find that most of us are doing a much better job at navigating these and for the most part are able to go through life without breaking significant laws - even with our imperfect minds and bodies.

  so why the need for a faithful and discreet slave, in the bible???

  Why would anyone condone the practice of slavery? by the use of the subject matter even in a parable?

  It's a good point. IMO this is one of the main indicators that Jesus was nothing more than a common man - his knowledge did not transcend the place and time he lived in. Yes he prophecized about the future, but still within the scope of what was accepted back then.

  Other disturbing details are for example, his references to "the great flood" when we know today that it is completely illogical and impossible that it happened. Also his reference to Adam and Eve which has been pretty much been disproven by modern studies on geneology. He accepted those, because for all intents and purposes, he didn't know any better.

  Slavery was normal and acceptable to him, because during the 33 years he lived, that's all he knew and saw. There were no thousands of years of existence to give him the insight and knowledge that perhaps slavery was not compatible with human decency and acceptable way of life.

  Who defines the limits on how far freedom to excersie your rights can go? No one apparently. This is not too many steps away from having and allowing marriage and of course sex with minors and animals.

  What idiotic nonsense, to compare gay marriage with animals and minors. It continues to amaze how people can't get past allowing something which changes nothing in their own lives. Who cares if gays get married?

  The fact of the matter is that homosexuality has reached a level of acceptance in our society which makes is deserving of this allowance. Look around you - Gay politicians, Gay parents who adopt kids, Gay bars, Gay CEOs, Gay this and gay that. Can we see the same level of acceptance with bestiality and pedophilia? How stupid and incredibly narrow minded to make this comparison.

  Is gay sex illegal? Well...no. How has that changed your and my way of having sex? It hasn't, we still like the opposite sex. Well the same concept applies to gay marriage - it's not going to change my view of marriage.

  Societies change. We make allowances as things become acceptable. 100 years ago, if you wore a bikini at the beach you would ostracized, perhaps even put in jail. Did that change? Why? Because gradually it became acceptable. That is the natural progression of societies. We make allowances to accomodate the rights of minorities when they don't affect the well being of the population as a whole.

  Drug addicts do this all the time. Usually they will ask $1 to "take the bus" or another brilliant excuse. They usually don't say that it's for food because they know that most people will just offer to buy them food only.

  Since 99% of them are looking for money for drugs or alcohol, i never give. It's nearly impossible to weed out the the ones who actually need to buy a bus ticket.

  More annoying than this are the windshield cleaners. You stop at a red light and 2 guys run to your car and immediately begin to clean your windshield before you cay say you don't need it. Within 30 seconds they are done and request a small donation. Being that they actually did something for you, you feel like a total jackass if you don't give them something.

  with regard to the UN versus religion, is motive and opportunity. The UN has no "motive" or reason at the moment.

  No they don't. And neither do governments. No government in it's right mind would try to do away with religion. Religion provides the checks and balances for members of a society who lack the self awareness to regulate themselves.

  If you take away religion, these individuals will go haywire because they will feel they are accountable to nothing and nobody. Governments don't want a society which is out of control. They rather have a society who thinks there is a man in the sky with a grey beard who will punish you if you misbehave.

  did you ever wonder that as a jw?.

  if all the trouble on this planet is down to satan and the demons, why not just get rid of them and then leave humankind alone and see how we go from there?

  wouldn't a god who "is love" (1 john 4:8) full of mercy and justice at least try that first?

  The usual excuse was always around the "big question".

  The idea was that wouldn't be wise to simply eliminate all source of opposition and criticism. That it would be as bad as if a King was questioned about something and he simply decided to kill the questioner instead of making a point to show the questioner was wrong. To all observing this, it would make them think that perhaps the questioner was right.

  There is some valid logic in this idea aside from the fact that it's all imaginary. But even if this concept seems the best way to go, why doesn't the Watchtower society provide a voice to those who oppose it, and instead tries to quickly eliminate them and cast them out where they can't be heard?

  they love to quote the verse "you must not make tattoo markings upon yourself," to "prove" that witlesses should not have body art.. yet the word tattoo is maori in origin.

  how the hell did moses know a maori word???.

  in every other translation it says you must not make cutting marks.

  There simply isn't impositions on Christians regarding tattoos.

  All of this other garbage about regret, trend, health risks, etc shouldn't even come into play. All of those things should be considered regardless in pretty much anything you do.

  Nobody in their right mind would get a Mike Tyson style tattoo. Common sense is needed in everything you do.

  during a study the elder brought out that eating blood and omens are from the devil, and brought me to leviticus 19:26 (i think).. in verse 27 i says this:.

  you must not shave the hair on the side of your head or disfigure the edges of your beard.. i said: "so why are we not allowed to have beards?".

  Yes clearly! This is a great point - they also don't have any specific rules on how hair should look for men. They will just make a general determination if it's proper or not, so this same concept could be applied to beards.

  THis is simply about control, just like tattoos and sisters wearing pants. It's about this outward over-the-top showing of how disciplined JWs are.
