Thanks Bill, this illustrates the short sightedness of the doom and gloom boys, they fondly imagine that things will stay as they are, they make no allowance for human ingenuity and endeavour, which equals progress.

None of the "fossil fuels" have run out, but human progress goes beyond them, as someone rightly said, "the stone age did not come to an end because we ran out of stone".

This planet still has tremendous resources and potential, it just takes the will of man to overcome the problems that halt progress, and all of those problems are man made !

One of the big problems is lack of education, this results in people believing what priests and gurus tell them, and in them fatalistically doing nothing to improve the world, whilst adding to its problems in many ways.

This will change, with education will come societal changes, better forms of government, perhaps somwhere democracy may be given a try ! (no true democracy ever existed) and people will decide what is right and good, and make sure it is done, the Arab spring is just a start, the whole world needs to change, and it will.

a "christian" who does not know what the gospel is cannot yield to it and is therefore not a christian (son of the god of abraham).. a "jew" who does not know what the bissar is cannot yield to it and is therefore not a jew (son of the god of abraham).. a "muslim" who does not know what the injeel or injil is cannot yield to it and is therefore not a muslim (son of the god of abraham).. .

religion blinds the minds of persons without faith in the abrahamic covenant, promise or testament (gospel/bissar/injeel/injil) so as to harvest them as sons of the god of religion instead, regardless of their chosen religious belief system..

I would be very interested to know which god Abraham worshipped, it was obviously the same god that the mysterious Melchizedek worshipped, but as we only get the stories from the writer of Genesis, who was a worshipper of Yaweh, it is made to look as though Abraham worshipped the god of the writer/editor/redactor.

This is assuming of course, that "Abraham" is an historical individual and not a character of fiction.

They are either right or wrong, whether you ar wise or not, O.K you may have a point about the warnings helping us to change our habits so disaster is averted, if that point were backed by evidence.

What worries me is that there is a constant knee-jerk reaction to every doomsters predictions, and often these reactions are a terrific brake on progress.

Take GM foods, take the push for Organic foods, the Doomsters say "GM foods -bad" "Organic foods-good" so governments and the public believe them and act on it without considering the evidence. GM foods are responsibloe for preventing much starvation already, and will do so even more in the future (the new flood resistant rice, for instance, will be a boon in Bangladesh and elsewhere)

Organic farming is bad for the Planet, it produces too much carbon.

All the evidence points to population being naturally restricted as people begin to enjoy a better standard of living, what is the best way to achieve that ?

Certainly not thinking ourselves wise when we have not looked at the evidence and based our policies and actions on sound reasons.

Extending Jonathan H's argument, not that I am in the same league as him with succinctly put cogent logic, but surely then the argument that "God" did not have a beginning, which believers use, is against their argument , where Tec, did your "Lord's" life come from ?

Pre-emptive shunning - a growing reality

i'm scanning through some of the results from the 2012 jw survey as they're coming in.. the most populous of the six voting categories with 76 voters so far is my own category, for those who are inactive, or "faded/fading" (not disfellowshipped or da'd, but no longer reporting time on the ministry).. one statistic already leaping out at me surrounds the question "do you experience 'pre-emptive shunning' from active witnesses, who view you as 'bad association'?

" of the 74 who voted on this so far, 76% have answered "yes" to this question.. it's early days, and obviously i will have a clearer picture of the extent of the problem once the survey closes at the end of the year.

however, the results already in suggest that pre-emptive shunning is widespread among inactive ones, despite this not being an "official" policy of the society.. i was interested in your opinions as to why this may be?

I think the subliminal hints in the WT literature, and the words of C.O's etc go in to the subconscious of the average dub and they think it is already a WT directive. hence it is quite a widespread practice.

This is the usual introduction by stealth method that the WT uses, they are probably hoping that the practice will become more or less ubiquitous and they will not have to put anything in print, which could be embarrasing to do, the DF policy is hardly supported by scripture, shunning the inactive/fading is definately not.

This may well come back to bite the WT in the bum, if you or I are to be treated as badly as they treat DF'd ones then why should we not go all out in our opposition to the cult ? we have nothing further to lose.

At present, those of us merely "inactive" choose to keep a low profile, but if they are going to shun us anyway, then they can expect a backlash.

Sloppy Scholarship and 3rd Rate Love (3/1 WT)

this watchtower is supposed to help people identify true christianity, relative to their cult standards (march 1, 2012).

of course, they use the name 'jehovah' as a club to fend off other claimants - why does it not surprize me that they self reference this silliness by quoting the new world translation and its wrongful insertion of 'jehovah' in romans 10: 13?

no logic here..... and for proof that christians used the name, they offer an unreferenced quote from jewish sources in regard to burning christian books.

Unless you know which manuscript Paul used when referring to the O.T you cannot know for sure that he was looking at one, or even familiar with one, that used the tetragrammaton, some substitute for it, or one that used simply Kyrios.

It is quite plain that a lot of his quotes are from the Septuagint, copies of which in Paul's time probably did not have the Name in full or even in part, from the 2nd century B.C , maybe earlier, the Name was not pronounced, in Hebrew manuscripts the vowel points for "Lord" being there to show that the Name should not be uttered when reading.

I know that there are a few champions of the WT's use of the Name, on here, Slimboyfat, and some scholars argue for its use in many instances, but I have my doubts.

If you read Paul's words in a translation that uses "Lord" it just seems much plainer than the NWT. It is plain to me that the NWT's insertion of "Jehovah" with no manuscript backing is motivated not by a desire for accurate translation, but to obfuscate the source of the trinity doctrine, that source often being the words of Paul.
