  Proportional Representation vs Electoral Collages

  the craziness of first-past-the-post elections .... we'll no doubt have to now live through the scotts demanding another referendum, because we may take their lands, but we will never take their freedom!

  and so they want to be free of the uk, where they have a disproportionate influence in parliament, and be a little dot that's part of the eu.

  yup, freedom.. but anyway, as it stands right now they have 48 seats after getting 1.2m votes.

  I think Scotland would fare O.K if she became independent. GDP per person is high, skills are there, Financial Sector is there, and they are well placed to trade when independent.

  For various reasons I do not think that 2020 is the right time to hold a Referendum, not least because I think the result would be close, despite what the Press may say,and Social Media pundits.

  Once the real debacle of Brexit has begun to bite, then it will be the time, and I say good luck and all the best to our Scottish friends. England would not like it because they would slip behind Brazil on the list of Countries GDP per person.

  There are alternatives,real devolution of power, not some half-arsed attempt at one.

  I back Proportional representation of some sort for the whole of the U.K, if that came first, Independence as an issue may fade. I will not hold my breath, the Evil Tory Racist Government just elected by a broken system, would not stand a chance with P.R of getting a majority, so will resist it to the last.

  on a public sidewalk, he asks attendees leaving a jehovah's witness convention in san diego a simple question, ''do jehovah's witnesses have the truth.

  If they really believed they had the truth, they would be eager to share it. This "experience" shows that the majority of J.W's today do NOT believe they have the truth.

  When I was fully in, I would have engaged anybody, anywhere who posed that question to me. I was confident I could make a very good job of defending my faith. I had crossed swords with Vicars, Priests and one time a full blown ( no Pun intended LOL) Bishop !

  Admittedly ,looking back, I know all those Seminary trained guys actually got the better of me, they won the debate !

  But I was still never afraid to talk to anybody about my beliefs.

  The Cognitive Dissonance of constantly hearing " the truth, the truth, the truth" and yet deep down knowing it is not, must be mental agony for today's JW's, who I think evidently are dishonest and have no integrity.

  Way over the top sir 82, I just looked at a small Mitsubishi 5 door saloon, so cheaper yes, but, low mileage full service history and made in 2915, asking price, £ 2,400.

  I reckon some sucker JW's buy these overpriced cars thinking the Angels will keep 'em going !

  As to Meeting Attendance, back in the early 2000s when I was still in about 30% would miss mid Week, and about 20% Weekend Meetings. Weekends we had loads of latecomers who would miss two thirds of the P.T anyway.

  If it is now worse than that, even an amalgamated Congregation formed from two previously separate ones, must look empty !

  we brits are being bombarded with facts and speculation about the horrific consequences of either corbin or johnson getting into power .

  another thread has discussed the anti-semitic leanings ( or not ) of corbin .

  what do people think about the left's claims that boris would sell off the nhs ,only this morning l saw a post on fb saying that " america is demanding full access to nhs records " it has been pointed out by a political reporter on the bbc that the talks that the papers were leaked about happened before johnson became pm and these were just things that have been put on the negotiating table by the usa .

  "The will of the British People" is trotted out as though it is a static thing. People, when given real facts, real information, are free to change their minds, or not, of course.

  The great Athenian Historian Thucydides gives an account where his fellow Athenians have decided to destroy an enemy City, their first Referendum, if you like, he then says that they decided good arguments were given on both sides, maybe more knowledge had been obtained? so they Debated the issue again, the second Referendum, if you like. They decided NOT to destroy the City, and then he makes a pertinent remark we should all take not of, he says, " If we cannot change our minds, then it is not Democracy". (See Book Three of his History)

  The Big Pharma Corporations of America would not be in negotiations to maintain present prices would they ? of course nothing has been agreed BEFORE an Election, the Tory Government even tried to keep the negotiations secret. Why do you think that was ?

  And as for Lying Boris and Lying Trump telling us there is nothing to worry about, when they BOTH have said previously that there sure was, who do you believe ? That pair ? or people with knowledge and great concerns, like those actually in the N.H.S. Those who purchase drugs for the N.H.S

  As to Voting decision, look at what you want to result from this Election, if it is 10 more years maybe of Tory misrule, half arsed remedies for problems they created by Austerity, millions of people, and their children in Poverty, a real hit to our Economy etc etc , then vote Conservative.

  If you want real change, a better Society, and real problem solving, then who will you Vote for ? probably you will say "Well, not Labour because ......", whatever your "becauses" are, do some real research, and see if they are true, and above all, do not waste your Vote where it can make no difference.

  Melbourne Convention Protest

  hi all.. i didn't want to post this in private because i want all to see what i saw.. the protest at the melbourne convention went superbly in my opinion.

  the protesters and their banners were more than eloquent and succinct.

  you could feel the emotion they all conveyed.

  I really do believe that this is the way to do a protest, respectful, loving, but with hard hitting messages. Those JW's passing by cannot "unsee" what was on those excellent signs.

  Shouting, harassing and being a nuisance is not the way.

  Life Update 2019

  it's been a while since i was anywhere close to being active here, or on any other ex-jw forum or facebook group.

  i rarely think about the religion and have little-to-no interest in it.. however, i do, very occasionally pop in here.

  Great to hear from you ! and it is lovely to hear your life is a thorough success, by the way I measure true success.

  I have two lovely sons, both respected and liked by all whom they meet, they were never actually J.W's, though we were still in until they were in their late teens. I have two beautiful grandchildren, I do not live in poverty.

  I rate that as true success for an ex jeehubbabub who left after nearly six decades in and lost a lot of his business from JW's !

  Please don't be a stranger at our door here, I always enjoyed your Posts, even when you were still religious, your incisive mind and ability to frame a good argument were a pleasure, even if only to cross swords with !

  All the best to you and yours old friend, and keep us Posted !

  the link is to the report on the new moston congregation in manchester u.k. the report says that better safeguarding has been introduced !

  we could tell then where even "better" safeguarding is still woefully short of what most other organizations are doing..
