The arguement about what a "magority" of experts feel about the Jesus references in Josephus is ridiculous. I had two different editions of the book and both made clear that the passages are very suspect. That the "magority" of experts happen to be Bible expositors may have something to do with the percentage proposed by Hobberus' quote.

brummie...The substance of her position, that is that there is a quite unmiraculous origin for Jewish and Christian theology, remains unrefuted. It is interesting that Price and Callahan were cited as critics of her work yet nothing was revealed as to the objections. It is left to appear that pagan associations to Christianity was being dismissed. In fact both are adament advocates of this well founded position. It is always unfortunate when overzealous amatures bring disrepute to a field of study, but this is the normal price payed for the popularization of science. The response she has received is a fine example of the self-correcting nature of academics. In her defence I must say that souces she provides as proof of the antiquity of astrological ages was a legitamate view held by many in the field. It may now be in question yet even the expert quoted as more accurate admitted ignorance as to when this became known but insisted it was not as long ago as Achyra suggests (his certainty seems a bit suspicious). The book The Mythraic Mysteries a new and authoritative book has figured that the Greeks and Romans must have retrocalculated so as to explain the astrological imagery. He does however quote a earlier authority who seems to agree with Achyra. Read the refutation posted by hooberus carefully it can be seen that she was not dishonest or deceptive but merely less cautious than she should have been about sources. "The Last Gods...Yahwah and Jesus" book is also very good at identifying and tracing the roots of Christianity. As I said in the original thread on this topic, Achyra (however it is spelled) invited critism by stepping away from the firmer ground. It is worth mentioning that her critic acuses her of simply appealing to authority for her material while himself doing nothing more than supply his own experts to refute her experts. Then add a few choice insults about her scholarship and he has effectively diverted attention from 95% of her arguements. This is the same techniques used by creationists (same camp) to discredit novel ideas about evolutionary history. I am at work and apologise for my lack of details, but if desired I will provide more if requested when at home.

Is there anyone out there who is truly interested in this topic and desires a rebuttal of this refutation from the christian site Hooberus has posted? A person is of course free to believe what they wish but as is always the case such an emotionally charged topic has invited a plethora of opinions all over the spectrum and sorting out fact from opinion requires some effort.

We faced a similar appeal to return to Jehovah and go to the "special talk". Actually my sister invited my wife but has written me off as evil. Anyways the answer we gave was to ask them if they will speak to us there if they knew we had attended only to see them. She of course said "no not if that is your reason". We calmly and with pain in our voice said it was unfair and unkind for them to make us conceal our motives for attending so as to see them again. She said " don't make me feel guilty!!!" and hung up. We have not been asked again. We hope this was not creating a greater rift but it apparently made her think about what she was asking for a second.

memorial tomb or grave ?
by twinkletoes inthe jw bible states at john 5:28.
...all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out..... this scripture was used (by jws) to show that only those in god's memory would be due a resurrection.. in our recent independant research, using 4 other bibles, this is how that same scripture was translated -.
...all those in the grave will hear his voice and come out.... why did they (the society) have to add to this scripture, giving a totally different meaning to the original understanding.. bibles used were.

Get real folks...The wt uses "memorial tombs" at John rather than "graves" because the technical point (use of tomb vs hades)seemed to offer a way (altho with great stretching of the text)to harmonize it with the teaching that those who sinned against the HolySpirit would "not be forgiven in this system nor that to come". This also is the necessary interpretation of John (tho creating an awkward change in tenses in passage) if you object to the idea that God would resurrect people only to kill them again for sins of past. (a minority Rabbinic opinion at the time)
It was an easy step to include others that God disliked (eg.Sodomites) with those who sinned against Holy Spirit and therefore not returning. The possibilty that NOT everyone will be resurrected served to quiet questions about Hitlers and Stalins and Achans. It also cemented organization loyalties for fear of being judged by God as unworthy of resurrection if dying as disfellowshipped person. As to hooberus...you gave me the best laugh today!! To suggest this God will recollect the molecules from a lond dead person to remake the same flesh is hilarious if reasoned out. The molecules have long been recycled and assimilated into the rest of the biota. It may well mean extracting molecules from one person (or steaming pile of poo) to give to another. The ancient doctrine of a god resurecting his worshipers was another ancient myth borrowed from the Ugarits and other Mediterranian cults. It predates the Jewish faith.

I believe the latest is that it is ok to sell a product to "Babylon" but not a service. It is ok to sell a service to the "worldly" governments or corrupt "big buisiness" but not to "false religion". This arbitrary discrimination among what it calls the three elements of this world can only be understood as resulting from competative jealousy and rivalry with other churches.
