Interesting...In all likelyhood it seems the author of Revelation was identifiying the legendary Nero revivicus (spelled right?)as King who was, is not, and yet will be, who was expected to return from the dead accompanied with the archer cavalry(locusts/horsemen) of the Parthian empire. (kings of the east) and retake the Roman throne.

ISP... hooberus and I had this ery discussion a while back. The Luke 22 verse is a late addition to the text as is evidenced by the early Latin (2-4th cent) and some greek manuscript ommitions. He knows this and is not willing to even consider the likelyhood of the gospels having been worked after Pauline Christianity became dominant. I enjoyed your postings though.

logan ..I also suspect that there was an outstanding zealot whose aborted mission to cleanse Judaism was the catalyst for a movement in Jerusalem who clung to his claims of liberation. But the best I can offer for evidence is the story in the NT about his cleansing of the temple. This was attempted by some zealots of the time but were routed by the hundreds of Roman and Jewish guards stationed there at all times. This might be suggestive of a historical core or it might be an example of actual history wrongly ascribed to the charactor of Jesus. I think we will be arguing this matter until more evidence comes to light. Earl Doherty's book has received good reviews for his thesis that there was in fact no HS (historical Jesus). Of course Hooberus may post links to more born again sites that claim to refute his work.

logan...I much respect your opinion about a historical Jesus, however it is likely that your views have been shaped by only one perspective. I spoke with Callahan about his assertion in his new book that Jesus was in his opinion an historical person, his reasons were not those sited here. For him he admits it is only a hunch based upon what he sees as othrwise difficult to explain details such as the Jesus being from Nazareth. I and others more qualified do not see these elements as evidence as he does. The Nazareth topic was dicussed here recently and I explained why there is no necessity to see this detail as anything but another fiction created to create the illusion of fullfilled prophecy.
The documentary evidence of a historical Jesus dispite claims otherwise is nonexistant or suspect at best as in the case of Josephus.
Arguements about the necessity of a historical founder for a new cult is often repeated but uninformed. The very cults competing with Christianity such as Mithraism and cults of Dionysus all were popular and powerful dispite lacking any historical core. It is deduced by many that the historizing of the Jesus story likely was the work of later penmen. The date of writing for the Gospels offered does not suggest the books were in their present form at that time. There is abundant evidence textural and manuscript that extensive rewritng was done under Catholic oversight up until the late 3rd century or later.
By the way, no, the Buddha was not, to all available evidence, a historical person either.
Whether at least one early christian writer depicted Jesus as a man like most of his day, engaging in male/male intimacy seems likely from the secret gospel of Mark.
The astrology bunk is not worth refuting.
