I had two friends commit suicide in the last two years. Both were just after disfellowshipping. The cultlike hold this religion has strips an individual's ability for self evaluation. The worth of a person is defined by the stand in the congregation not by their heart.

sharon roe, sister in law of robert bryant is being df'd by the wts to keep her quiet about how they drove her brother in law to the brink of despair & beyond, by constantly hounding him & supporting his parents in their battle to undermine his headship as a parent by trying to get visitation and/or custody of his children.
they knew he was severely depressed & yet continued to harass this man, to the point where something so horrible, so unspeakable happened.

It is of note that this Yahweh was plenty willing to cause miscarriages/abortions among his own people and their animals if they neglected the sabbath. Does this mean that He felt that abortions are justified if the parents are not JWs? Since the kids are unclean.

It was wrong however to stone people who ate pork. It is ridiclous to suggest this loving god would kill people to protect them from ringworm. It is a modern invention to try to find a legitamate justification for these arbitrary ritualistic laws. Suggesting a wise benevolence. My statement that no doubt at least some of these taboos developed from years of unexplained illness associated with certain foods. But it was still fear and superstition that made eating these foods criminal acts. It would better indicate divine wisdom if the rules had simply required proper cooking. Besides, the vast majority of these prohibited animals were fine to eat. Their uncleaness was strictly ceremonial.(superstition) The pig example is used because we all have heard of trichonosis. And so it is used to suggest that similar health risks were associated with all these "unclean" animals. Foolishness!

One of the many similarities of the Phoenician/Syrian sun god Adonis has with Yahweh is the prohibition of pork for his woshipers. No doubt some of the dietary rules were arrived at through less interesting ways such as an outbreak of hepatitis from bad shellfish or something but such laws appear in other cults as well for purely religious reasons. I always liked the explanation as to why "Moses" said hares were chewers of cud. They like many animals will reeat their feces! No doubt in fact they were assumed to be chewing cud because they move their nose and upper lip when sniffing the air, which they do almost all day long. They do not chew cud any more than dogs who also enjoy a fresh pile of rabbit (horse,goat,etc) crap to munch on.

Yerusalyim...The Passover likewise mirrors ancient cultic practices. Blood spilling and animal/human sacrifice have stained human history from very primitive days. The detaials of wine and bread as symbols of blood and flesh of a human savior slaim, do not come from the Passover celebration.
I know you feel this indebtedness is improbable but this is recognized by most Catholic theologians. I myself spend 3 hours discussing these points with a priest of a large church after I was surprised by a remark he made in his sermon to this effect. He knew (learned through Catholic periodicals)and preached that Bible stories were mythological tales with a moral. He felt the moral was inspired not the story. Likewise the Christ story is manifestly filled with mythology largely absorbed from pagan cults. Yet he had resolved that this in no way diminished the message of love and self sacrifice. We left on good terms agreeing to disagree about the value of perpetuating pious lies for the betterment of men.

and i thought to myself, aren't the jws the ones who say, "there is peace and security" - i.e.
their religious security, from their effort to 'nail him down'.

The JWs and others ae waiting for some outstaning declaration from the wprld that it has accomplished peace and security on their own. and see this as the final trigger for God's aner. Te U>N is expected to play a role in creating this peace. It was said in print that this declaraion of P&S may be already being announced, as it embodies the last two decades tward gobalization. This allows a vague fullfillment that essentially makes it valueless as a sign. As efforts tward peace have been perenial since the dawn of civilization.
In the past (back 60-70 years or so) it was explained that P&S would be delared by Christendom when it had squelched the voices of the JWs. This was changed when much of the time table order of "prophecy" was ammended.
This illustrates how a passage can be pulled like taffy to any shape that "harmonizes" with a preconceived doctrine.
The verses simply expressed a generic surprise on the part of nonbeleivers when the Christian Apocolypse befalls them. Many expected the end to have come long before the author(ostensibly Paul) wrote this text. Some were puzzeled by the peace unbelievers seemed to have. It was neessary to create a renewed sense of imminence to offset the appearance of delay. So worded another way, " Ya sure everything is normal life is in fact good, but don't be deceived this is exactly what clear sighted Christians in the know should expect life would be like just before the sudden destruction of nonbelievers." The phrase is translated various ways in Bibles for example: 1 Thess 5:2 You know the Lord's day will come just like a thief in the night. 3 When people say, "Alls well and safe!" then sudden destruction will come on them suddenly like pains on a woman who is going to have a baby, and they will not escape. 4 But you, my fellow Christians are not in the dark that you should let that day take you by surprise like a thief.
No prophecy is expresed or implied. Paul was simply attempting to keep the flock in the corral by down playing the prosperity around them. Not much has changed in 2000 years, Fundementalist theologians have used similar logic today. Whenever things seem to be moving tward greater peace and human rights it is seen only as a test of your faith that Jesus is comming to destroy the wicked so as to bring real peace. To have pulled this one phrase out of context and given it a life of it's own as a vital sign of the last days is typical of Bible literalism.

Elders authority over non JW's?
by figureheaduk injust been looking at e-watchman's mailbag (a bit one sided to say the least.........), and there was a question from a girl who is studying with someone else who she's fallen in love with.
it seems that she's been told that they can't date until they've both been baptized - so she asked the e-watchman his advice.
the first sentence of his reply was "the elders in the congregation don't really have authority over those who are not part of the congregation".

In a discussion with a branch elder once this topic came up.. It was his position that all theocratically apointed servants and elders are in line for prinely rule in the new world. And that their present authority, like Jesus', is merely resistd by the unbelievers. In other words they DO have the authority to rule/govern but due to the present allowance of wickedness on God's part they do not have the right to insist on their authority before God's appropriate time. And therefore their tolerence of disrespect is in imitation of God's and Christ's. This may or may not be in print as I don't have the resources to check.

The sacrements of bread and wine representing the flesh and blood of a slain savior were part of cultic practice centuries beore Christianity. Devotees of Attis, Mithra, Dionysus, Zoroaster and others ceremonially partook of a Eucharist as a way to attain "oneness" with the Savior now gone. Zoraster it is said ate his last meal with his followers and instructed them to continue this practice after his death. (6th century B.C.)
So obvious was the pagan origin of this practice and most all other Christian teachings that Pagan theologians of the time often derided Chistianity as a copy of their own. This in itself would not have upset them, as they saw their own faith as indebted to earlier ones, if the Christians had not insisted that paganism was evil and demon inspired. The standard reply from Christian apologists was that the Devil had possessd foreknowledge of God's plan and so preemptively made counterfeit religions to conceal the uniqueness of Christianity. Others suggested that God used the pagans to "prophesy" about the Christ through their cult practices. And so interpreted this way the Christian commadeering of pagan concepts and practices were seen as in reality only more "proof" of Christianity's superiority.
