"behold damascus will cease from being a city.
will be a ruinous heap".. maybe that's why my son-in-law jw said the end is so.

24:14 like a mantra.. but who was he speaking to, us gentiles in the church age?
no, he was speaking to the jews, god's covenant people.
I agree Crazy Guy, but what do you think of my general division of the two messages?
1. Kingdom message, generally for the literal Jews
2. Saved from judgment message, generally for everyone else

JW's repeat MT. 24:14 like a mantra.
But who was he speaking to, us Gentiles in the Church age? No, he was speaking to the Jews, God's covenant people. Mt. 24:14 applies to literal Jews during the Great Tribulation, AFTER the church age has ended.
Keep in mind that the OT prophets did not see the Church age. The 69th of the 70 weeks of Daniel's prophecy culminated with the appearance and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. God still owes the Jews one week, the 70th week, the Great Tribulation week. That's when the "Kingdom" message will really matter.
So, what was the message that us Gentile believers were supposed to be preaching? Did Jesus have a special message for us to deliver? He certainly did. Jesus died at the behest of the Jewish religious leaders he was sent to save. But, he didn't stay dead!
The resurrected Jesus Christ then turned his attention to the fledgling church and gave this command for us in Acts 10:
So Peter opened his mouth and said: ..... He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him....They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.
Q. Why aren't Jehovah's Witnesses declaring the good news that Jesus himself will judge the living and the dead?

can't we all just agree to finally give a 150 year old theory a nice funeral?
there is no way this stuff lasts hundreds of millions of years!.
ok i posted about a month ago asking for advice on writing a letter to my former congregation regarding my children.
my ex husband still goes to our old hall and although we have joint custody he is raising them to be good little jws on his time.
i understand that in your organization age is not a determining factor in whether or not a person can get baptized, however as the young people ask book points out:
I would make it far simpler. I would ask that I be present when they explain to my children BEFORE they get baptized that Jesus is not, and never will be a Mediator between them and God, as a baptized Jehovah's Witnesss.
I would then challenge them to provide even ONE New Testament scripture that shows how a person can get their sins forgiven OUTSIDE of the New Covenant.
If they cannot produce even one scripture that shows how a person can get their sins forgiven OUTSIDE of the New Covenant, then I would tell them that they should be ashamed of themselves for holding themselves out to be bible teachers.
Fight fire with fire. JW's do not tell new members that Jesus is not their Mediator. You find this out WAY later....if ever at all.
If your teenage children want to join a religion that denies Jesus as their Mediator that stands between them and God's justice, then let them go ahead and do it. If they do not fear God's justice, they probably won't care too much about what your wishes are.
i am the husband of an ex-jw.
she left when she was 18, because she was dating a non-jw.
they got married, and he began openly cheating on her.
Yes, I had that shunning scripture pointed out to me as well. Let's look at that shall we?
But I now have written unto you not to keep company with any man who is called a brother if he is a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner. With such a one you are not even to eat. 1 Cor. 5:11
When I get this scripture quoted to me I ask the person if they are also familiar with the 9th commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Where is your evidence that I am any of those things? I then remind them of God's punishment for false accusers.
Deuteronomy 19 ... if the witness is a false witness, who has testified falsely against his brother, "then you shall do to him as he thought to have done to his brother; so you shall put away the evil from among you.
I then advise them to repent.
the more i read about ritual shunning and disfellowshiping in the society, the more i wonder how the governing body and elders have pulled the proverbial wool over the eyes of the congregation.
first, the society doesnt consider itself a church (unlike the ancient christians, who did consider themselves to be part of a church).
yet, like other sectarians, they have their hands out for contributions and exercise immense power over their members.
It's a great environment for those who are afraid of experiencing love, since it makes a mockery of familial love, turning it into a travesty.
Adamah,
You make a great point here as well. It is no secret (to me at least) that certain personality types are attracted to the WT more than others.

the israelities needed moral codes, civil codes and holiness codes.. when the jews were getting ready to go to the promise land, god.
had to prepare them to become a nation.
I now find the concept of vicarious punishment to be repulsive.
There is a prolific poster on here named Terry. He went to prison for avoiding the draft (and alternative service) at the behest of Watchtower policy.
He wrote one time that his dear mother asked the FBI agents (or some such authority) if she could somehow serve his sentence for him because he was so young. It was a natural desire for someone with a strong enough love bond.
The idea of substitutionary atonement is ETCHED or hardwired into our consciousness. It is the basis for many of our greatest literary stories. And, it is as simple as a mother wishing to take the punishment due her son for herself......which is exactly what God did.
In the classic book and movie Last of the Mohicans, the theme of substitution is illustrated to the fullest. In the below clip, the Indian Cheif had just declared that the brunette daughter of the British general would die to avenge the loss of Magua's children. Then, Daniel Day Lewis tellls the chief in English that he would offer himself to die in her place.
However, the british officer had to translate the request into french to the French-allied chief. In that translation, he did not do it correctly. Instead, he offered himself to die in her place. Both men loved her. The chief agreed to the exchange.
When they took the british officer to be killed, Daniel Day Lewis understands what the british officer had done, and starts screaming "Take Me, Take Me". This is where the clip begins:

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.- Jn 15: 13
the only reference to living forever, (or indefinitely long) in the genesis 2&3 account, is in reference to the "tree of life".
gen 3:22 "--eat and live to time indefinite--".
this tree must have been hard to find because wt writers opined that eventually, in their faithful course, a&e would be led to that allowed tree to gain everlasting life's symbolic confirmation.. therefore as the ancients accidentally & correctly wrote, humans did not have inherent everlasting life, but it was gained through diet.
The watchtower buys into the notion that environment is responsible for all our evils. They seem to reason that if we could could just get rid of all worldly influences except their own, then people could grow to perfection. Then, once perrrrfected, God would OWE you eternal life based on your perfect existence.
In this way, JW's are a savior unto themselves.

If I am put on trial by a loving God I have nothing to fear Perry.
What you are saying is that God is good. And, you are right. He is a good God. He is also a good judge.
The love you speak about that would give you a pardon on your judgment day is ONLY offered through the blood of Jesus, the New Covenant. It's free in the sense that you don't have to work for it. It is costly because it will cost you your ego and pride.
You can have your ego, or you can have God's pardon, but you cant have both.
