the european space agency has produced a fascinating map of the universe using the super dooper plank satelite.. by stripping out dust emissions and radio frequencies from the milky way galaxy and more distant objects to leave just the afterglow of the big bang, an image of the microwave radiation (measured over a 15 month period) has been obtained that gives an extremely precise picture of the universe just 380,000 years after the big bang.. what we have learned from this data is the universe is some 80 million years older than we thought, the universe is made up of slightly more ordinary matter than was previously thought - 4.9% of all matter, up from 4.5% - and that there is less dark energy (which cosmologists don't understand) than previously thought and also it has an axis of evil (it appears the early universe was assymetrical) and a cold spot!!.

so we need to go back to the drawing board with regard to inflation theory to account for the asymmetry and cold spot.. this is why i love science, the more we learn, the more we have to learn.

They were saying... return to some more simple theories and get rid of some of the more complex ones.

The Standard Model is not robust enough to explain mathematically dark holes, dark energy and dark matter, etc. So in 1984 physicist (John Schwarz and Michael Green) showed that String Theory is a player. It theorizes that everything material is made of strings, the final smallest particles. Hence, everything and everybody is part of a cosmic oscillating symphony. What's promising is the mathematics has the simplicity elegance hallmark of Relativity (Einstein) and Electro-Magnetism (Maxwell). But it's very, very speculative with its multiverse (parallel universe) notion.....hmmm.

things aren't that permanently nailed down, in this universe.

The subatomic particle world is permanent, which is the underpinning of everything physical in the universe. Nothing to worry about with the universe.

But earth with man and nukes; that's a situation.

there are no real "fixed" Laws of nature and Physics etc,

No, constants are still there fixed e.g. speed of light, E=mc 2 , etc. CERN and satellites are getting additional info plus discovering new things like recent Higgs boson. Bottom line: we're getting more and more sharper understanding of how it all works; this means new layers of physics mathematics .

Yes, conservation of energy and matter laws are still fixed and working fine i.e. no net loss of energy or matter, universe is still a closed system in this regard.

Yes, we know the universe will never recoil, i.e. stop expanding and bounce back. So no bounce back crunch.

This dismissal causes him to fail to lock in on "The Theory of Everything", which is unification of the laws of General Relativity (world of the planetary stupendously large) with the laws of Quantum Mechanics (world of the atomic infinitesimally small).
