  I have been rumbled!

  i tried to join witnet and used a different nick name.

  the idea being that i could try to "help" the confused.well i got rumbled.

  mgm is correct, they record the IP addresses to work out who is who.

  They do monitor this site (obviously). I was once a member of WOL, and as soon as I started to post on this site, they duly kicked me off WOL. I was rather annoyed at first, but now I feel they did me a great service, as I don't have enough time to go to BOTH sites. This one is definitely the best.

  tina, "Big Ray" (aka "extra-cheese-with-the-fries-Ray) is a fairly aggressive person. He has admitted to going to head with his local elders at times

  Funnily enough, this isn't the first time I've heard about violence charges against him.... not surprised, for some reason....

  the writers of the simpsons must have had jw contacts.. think of ned flanders and his family, totally jw!!.

  think ofmr burns doesnt he look just like that evil elder who would always open the theocratic ministry school?.

  i am absolutely certain that fred hall is spitting image of mr burns, i can picture him so clearly in his grey raincoat and gold leaf dog eared bible walking hunchedup in the rain pestering people on a sunday afternoon.....

  Mr Burns is actually the elderly brother that was only used to give prayers, as he was unable to give talks anymore.

  Just a female thing?

  since drifting from the org over the last year or so i have been slowly updating my clothes.

  i thought maybe it was just me who had been dressing like a middle aged matron since i was 23 but whilst talking to a young xsister recently i learnt that she too has thrown out most of the clothes she used to wear whilst a dub.. has anyone else found themselves doing this, and is it just a female thing?

  expatbrit - you don't have the initials "TBT" and used to be in a TV series filmed in England during the 70s, by any chance? LOL...

  When I was in, I had 3 sets of clothes - casual clothes, work clothes, and meeting/assembly clothes. Added up to a lot of money come to think of it. I have noticed I save alot by not having to wear Society-approved clothes for the meetings. I still dress conservatively for work becos I'm an "office chick", but I now wear my casual tops a little lower.

  Dont Use the Bible

  ...when you are trying to get through to a jw.

  at least that has been my experience since disassociating in 1997 and hitting the internet to speak to them.

  i have seen that mostly the jws arent familiar with the bible past what the society has constantly hit them over the head with all their lives, the same tired scriptures, the same tired arguments.

  this is an excellent post. I have tried with one family member to reason with her, but it is very very difficult to break through that barrier.

  I find that it's better to take the discussion slowly, stick to one point and try to reason on things from their point of view. Ask questions that have to be answered. Reason on those questions. Act like you are a Bible student all over again, begging to know WHY.

  It's hard, but I think it can be worth it.

  some may remember me from a few years back on h2o.. i remain an active jw due to my family.

  i had chose not to continue participating in any forums out of a concern to not weaken the faith of others.

  Smurfs

  by now most of us have heard the urban legends of smurfs vs. jw's.. such as smurf dolls walking down kingdom hall aisles or strangling jw babies (replaced dingos eating them in australia lol).. the initial problem jw's had with smurfs was that on the tv show they were conjuring up spells, later more ummm "enlightened" jw viewers started questioning a community of all males with only one female (smurfette).. so jw's felt that it was not appropriate for jw children to watch shows about magic.. it is this same reasoning that has scared some away more recently rom harry potter novels and pokemon.. it was stupid when it involved smurfs and is just as stupid now.

  but there ya have it, the main reasons (if you can call them that...) that jw's hate smurfs and developed such wild stories to enforce their opinion.. kismet

  It must have been an Australian rumour about the Cabbage Patch dolls, as I remember it being a BIG no-no to own one of those dolls. When they first came out, I was still young enough to have dolls, and I was more than a little disappointed.

  I remember a few years later a pic was in the WT of a family. The little girl in the pic was holding a Cabbage Patch doll!! This reassured us that they MUST be ok - after all, it was in the Watchtower!!

  Did the elders keep secret files on us?

  howdy all,.

  i've recently discovered all the great ex-jw sites on the internet, and i've enjoyed reading other people's stories.

  but a few passing comments in some stories have made me wonder: do or did the elders keep files on individuals in each congregation?

  I know that when I sent a letter to the Society (one copy to Brooklyn and one to the local branch), when the local branch sent me a reply, they cc'd a copy to my elders. I know this because it was on the letter of reply they sent me.

  Interestingly, although my local elders received that copy, they did nothing to contact me to address the concerns I had written about. But then, the reply from Bethel (local branch) didn't address the issues I wrote about either; instead they gave a whitewashed reply that any dodo could have written.

  i was raised jehovah witness.

  i am not practicing at the moment!.

  it's been over 15 years, that i don't attend the kingdom hall.. i have been married with a man that is a practicing seventh day adventist, and as everyone knows the conflicts in our beliefs are tremendous.. i don't agree with his beliefs and visa versa!.

  The Sabbath and all of the Commandments (600+ of them) were abolished by the death of Jesus Christ.

  A few scriptures you could show your husband :

  Rom 7:4,6 - So, my brothers, YOU also were made dead to the Law through the body of the Christ, ...But now that we have been discharged from the Law, because we have died to that by which we were being held fast, that we might be slaves in a new sense by the spirit, and not in the old sense by the written code.

  Gal 2:13,14 - Christ by purchase released us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse instead of us, because it is written: "Accursed is every man hanged upon a stake." The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham might come to be by means of Jesus Christ for the nations, that we might receive the promised spirit through our faith.

  Col 2:13,14,17 - [God] made you alive together with him. He kindly forgave us all our trespasses and blotted out the handwritten document against us, which consisted of decrees and which was in opposition to us; and He has taken it out of the way by nailing it on the torture stake. ...for these things are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality belongs to the Christ.

  As regards disfellowshipping(shunning, excommunication, etc) the witnesses use the scriptures Rom 16:4, 2Thess 3:14 (though they ignore v.15), and 2John 10,11.
