So what's the point Chris. How do YOU define instinct. Obviously you have a definition that is different from common useage. Your argument seems to be:

Since sex can be influenced by rational processes THEREFORE it isn't instinctive.

My point has been that cyber-sex is NOT a terrible breach of the marriage contract. It may be a violation of a persons preference that they receive ALL love and affection from their partner. My argument is that life,love,relationships,marriage have a basis in our being the kind of animals we are. These things arive late on the scene and are mostly noise in the machinery. Dreamaker is disappointed (not shocked I hope) because he is a tad bit idealistic.

Spreading one's seed if you're a male is a structural arrangement. Nature doesn't grant you the luxury of thinking about it. You grow up with a "poker" attached to the front of your body - so you look for something to "poke".

You can fight your desire to eat too. Anorexia? But it's not natural. When I eat I don't think "I have to eat so I can rebuild my tissues and keep my blood sugar adequate". I just eat.

I made a mistake before. "Monogamy" controls male aggression. Marriage is just a legal arrangement. It's primary intent was to protect property. If you don't plan to have kids or transfer property why marry. Just let your yes mean yes. If a woman and man stay together long enough the state grants them the same property rights as a marriage.

Beyond that any two people who live or work together have numerous transactions that define the relationship. It goes without saying that the relationship that RESULTS from a marriage agreement can take any shape or form agreeable to both. When they don't agree anymore on something big or on a lot of little things either of them may decide to end the relationship.

Cyber-sex on top of a lot of other discontents might be the straw that breaks the camels back.

Just to explain a little about male aggression.

Courtship pits male against male. The wimpiest of us get an "attitude" when it comes to cornering a female. Females are competitive too, but once she's knocked up she drifts to the sidelines with the most important business in nature - rearing the young.

Marriage ends the perpetual seeking of females - for most but not all males. Masculinity is a strategy in nature. Sperm is cheap. Eggs are expensive. A male is always ready. The male objective is to fertilize as many eggs as possible. Nature is much more conservative with females. She gets a few eggs and she is primarily responsible for getting the best nest possible.

I would hope those who participate in this forum don't need to have all those qualifying phrases that point out the fact that what is true of most males or females is not true of "all". Do we have to point that out forever? I use semantic devices like "quotes" but there is always going to be (almost always) some overgeneralizing. The english language (which is the only language I know) easily lends itself to either/or thinking.

The problem is when you think of marriage as an institution created by some GOD. Marriage is an institution that controls male agression and gives females a haven for rearing the young. Beyond that... you write your own rules. Men treat women as sex objects. Women treat men as success objects. Men look at porno when an available female isn't around. Women read romance novels. Cyber-sex is "sex" only by definition. It is rather pharasaical to keep moving the boundary back to prevent "sin". Everything you attach the word sex to is not necessarily "sex".

JW's drive their young people into "sex" by messing with the definition. By calling "petting" loose conduct and requiring confession to the elders they drive people to the next step which really is "sex". If I am going to have to confess, you'd better believe it's going to have to be worth it.

Marriage IS a recipe for boredom - for many - but not for ALL. Since we really are just animals - there probably is NOTHING in life as engaging and exciting as the pursuit of a new sexual partner. However, men are extremely aggressive and disruptive when they are on the chase. Soceity is built on the back of boredom. We have great buildings, technology, music, because men are bored.

for me it was when i was about twelve years old and my best friends dad was disfellowshipped from the congregation.. i could not understand how a god of love would treat someone so coldly.. i used to think what if that was the way my parents would treat me if i had done something wrong, that would be so hard and cruel.. as i got older another thing that bothered me was the beard issue.

it may sound pretty trivial however the society has always refused to make a good arguement as to why they would give you the old cold shoulder if you were to grow one.. two more items; first i could not understand why all the congregations and all the assemblys would give income reports.

and the society never did.

When I found out that Wooly Mammoths had tundra grasses in their stomachs and were always found frozen in creeks. That combined with ice cores in Greenland that go back 100,000 years. Clearly there was no world wide flood. Jesus, by speaking of the flood showed that he was bamboozled by the same myth. Cards continued to fall from that point on.

when jws ask one of the anointed just how they "know" that they are anointed, they are really asking what it is that god does via the holy spirit that tells them they are chosen.

a "bolt" of lightening?

With early Christians "God's spirit bore witness" by means of miraculous gifts. JW's claim that this is an inner feeling of having been chosen. But that "feeling" is accounted for as "our spirit" or personal conviction. Such "inner feeling" is insufficient if it doesn't receive some miraculous testimony in the form of some "gift".

I have never met anyone who exhibited any extraordinary gift they could point to as god-given evidence of being "spirit-begotten". I doubt the so-called gifts that were claimed by the first century christians. There is no convincing evidence that resurrections, casting out of demons, healing of physical defects ever occurred. Such modern claims are all hoaxes and easily debunked or accounted for by non-miraculous pschosomatic type healings.

No one has ever verified that speaking in tongues is anything but an effect of a sort of religious hysteria. That goes for tongue-speaking at pentecost, too.

The really scary thing is that JW's are governed by men who believe the feeling they experience really is some special annointing. If there really is a God, would he allow the only evidence of his special choice to be something so abstract and similar to psychosis?

How do you define spirituality?

it's a general question for anyone, and it's a very personal one that requires personal answers.

i'm not asking what the bible says, what science says, what the dictionary says, or what your mother says.

i'm asking how you, as an individual with your own ideas, feelings and perceptions, conceptualize spirituality.

"Spirituality" is a word. Like all words it means what we want it to. Words mean some "thing" or "it" around which we have drawn a circle and separates it from what it "is not". "Spirit" is not Matter. When you draw a circle around "Spirit" you are separating it from matter and energy. What is there besides "matter and energy"? There is "relation" . So spirituality has to do with how things connect. On a personal level it's "orientation". When you see how things are connected you gain perspective that leads to wisdom.

Who Was Cain Afraid of?

when god banished cain, why was he in fear of his life when there was only he and his family on the earth?

after all, how many could there have been and is it logical to think they were everywhere else--anywhere else but where cain and his family lived?

Cain was afraid of the Nodites. You only have trouble with Genesis if you take it literally. The Bible is a hodge-podge of folk-lore that serves as a matrix for a few vital messages. The vital messages/prophesies have been embedded in the Bible like a virus invades a cell. Because the Bible was considered sacred it was a good place to store universal messages and be assured of their replication.

for those who "grew up in the borg"

at this late, middle stage of my life, i've started wondering, now that i know what i know, about the things in my life that i "lived" with.

having been raised all my life in the "borg" i have known nothing else.

when questions began forming years ago, it started me thinking.

There is a very subtle problem with being raised as a JW. From my earliest years I was told I would never die or grow old. This is more than enough to make up for NO SANTA NO EASTER BUNNY NO TOOTH FAIRY NO BIRTHDAYS ETC> Had it been true it would have been amazingly wonderful. But at the very core of my experience is a child who was lied to. A child whose parents have died. A child who is profoundly disappointed.

People who have come into the organization after childhood were raised on a much more realistic promise. At the core of their experience they learned to accept death as inevitable. True, I know intellectually that death awaits all but at my core is still the oldest neuro-chemical pathways in my brain that reminds me that all that I was promised is now a lie. I have learned to be aware of this tendency. I will never overcome that reflexive let-down but I can manage it by knowing it will be there to make me sad - until the day I die.

Those who have been raised in this organization need to be aware of this tendency. Especially, counselors and mental health practitioners need to know of this unique syndrome of those raised as JW's. I think it predisposes certain individuals to suicide.
