It DOES affect you. You have chosen a particular method of dealing with this sort of thing that many alienated individuals use. It is an adaptation. It doesn't confront reality head on.
It is natural to have favorites. It is our evolved animal natures to do that. HOWEVER, can't we transcend such distractive tendencies. Many who are reading this will agree with me.
BUT they won't speak their mind because they fear accusations of ENVY, SOUR GRAPES, LOOSER.
I don't give a shit about those accusations.

That's exactly what these popularity contest do - pander to the least common denominator.
Red marks on papers? Go to hell... nobody is grading here.
If you want to tell someone they are doing a good job you can just as easily send them a private message.
I made my comment. The dogs bark and the parade marches on.
What really is sickening is the fact that these people that always show up on the "preferred poster list" never repudiate this whole process. They know in their hearts that this is discouraging to the "least" of the common denominators.

Reification of the "cult" idea
by logansrun insometimes i must confess bewilderment at peoples talk of cults: i.e.
comments like well, the witnesses display all the characteristics of a cult as noted by [insert anti-cult website here].
has it occurred to anyone that the idea of a cult is a human invention, indeed a very peculiar modern human construct in comparison with the rest of social history?

Good subject. Anti-cult people are often as fanatical as the religions they choose to battle. If you read the AA definition of an alcoholic it includes just about everyone including those "enablers" who happen to be a friend, spouse, of family member of an alcoholic. Movements of all sorts have to keep inventing reasons why they exist.
The anti-cult people really become obnoxious when they try to use the governement as accomplices.
I view cults as little laboratories from which interesting and useful social structures emerge. Just another part of evolution. Evolution makes its greatest leaps in little isolated pools.
To those who say "But what about the damage it does to people?" I say "Tough shit - you're going to die anyways"

It wasn't until the discovery of the microscope that humans figured out that women contribute an egg to the reproductive process. The "seed" was believed to be a complete miniature human. Look at the language of the Bible. Women were just soil - fertile or infertile. If a woman didn't conceive it was because she was "barren" a womb without the capacity to grow the "little" person.
That's why Onan's sin was so bad - they believed he dumped a "seed/person" on the ground to die.
Even the concept of transferral of Adamic sin is based on an erroneous prescientific idea of reproduction. They believed Adam had complete little people in his "loins" (whatever exactly that was).
So the early Christians didn't concern themselves with Mary's genetic contribution. There was none. They believed Jesus was a "seed" complete human that grew on Mary's soil.
