Questions on Stephen Bates Article WT attack
by messenger inthought you'd be interested to know that i have just been forwarded a note from the watch tower, belatedly in response to the tiny little story i got in on 17 november about that chicago jw couple accused of beating their daughter to death.
it is interesting that they shld respond - on headed notepaper, apparently from pennsylvania - nearly a month later about something that really got very little space and i can't help feeling it's not unconnected with the other stuff i was writing at that time.
this is it, in full:.

Once a person becomes a babtized witness they remain in a babtized condition and accountable to the WTS. That accountability changes if they are disfellowshipped, or formally disassociated. 1. They can disassociate themselves formally by writting a letter to the elders and expressing wishes to no longer be recognized as one of Jehovahs Witneses. 2. They can be formally disassociated by the elders.
If these 2 things have not taken place, then a babtized Jehovahs Witness remains in a babtized condition and are still accountable to the laws and regulations of the WTS. And the fact that they attended meetings, even if it was not on a regular bases, showed that they also recognized their standing in the congregation as Jehovahs Witnesses.
Word games does not work for this situation.Pureheart

Now let me try to understand the positions of these governments.
They want to tax moneys in certain areas that are collected by religious organizations. They are not saying that they want “all” of the money, just a portion of it. They also want taxes paid on the services received, and I take this to mean that this is a financial protection for the volunteers. When these volunteers retire, would that mean that they could expect to receive some kind of retirement benefit from the government?
Did Jesus not say, “pay Caesars things to Caesar.” Did Paul not say, “be obedient to the Authorities?” If we did not receive one more watchtower or awake or any other book from the WTS, because they could not afford to pay the taxes for the volunteers, wouldn’t you agree that we have enough literature to last a lifetime? At least they are giving the witnesses the freedom to worship. Isn’t that the most important thing?
Remember WTS practice what you preach; “money is for a protection, but it is wisdom that preserves alive its owners.”Pureheart

Trial Begins for Priest Accused of Molestation
By PAM BELLUCK
OSTON, Jan. 14 — It is a case that has sent shudders through this largely Catholic city that have reverberated to the highest echelons of the Roman Catholic Church.
A former priest, John J. Geoghan, has been accused by more than 130 people of sexually molesting boys over 30 years as he was transferred from parish to parish. In civil suits filed by many of the complainants against him and the archdiocese, Cardinal Bernard F. Law and five bishops have been accused of knowing about the pattern but continuing to place Mr. Geoghan in positions that put him in contact with young boys.
The case has prompted the cardinal to apologize and helped urge the Vatican to issue rules on accusations of sexual abuse by priests.
The boys, now adults, and their families said Mr. Geoghan raped or fondled children in his rectory bedroom, in his car and in a youth club. They said he made a point of befriending single mothers and insinuated himself into the family, molesting children while bathing them, putting them to bed or praying with them. In one complaint, Mr. Geoghan is accused of molesting seven boys in a single family.
Mr. Geoghan, 66, was defrocked in 1998. But his case has vaulted into the public spotlight in recent months as three criminal complaints and a wave of civil suits have been filed against him.

The Rev. Joseph Casey, left, talked with John J. Geoghan, a former priest, on Monday in Cambridge, Mass., as Mr. Geoghan's sister Catherine Geoghan listened in a break in jury selection in Mr. Geoghan's trial. In Depth
Crime and Courts | ReligionJury selection began today in Mr. Geoghan's first criminal trial, in Middlesex County Superior Court in Cambridge. He is charged with molesting a 10-year-old boy while a priest at St. Julia's Parish in Weston, a suburb west of Boston. His second trial, on charges of two counts of raping a 7-year-old boy, is scheduled to begin in late February in Suffolk County Superior Court in Boston. A third trial, in which Mr. Geoghan faces two counts of indecent assault and battery involving a 10-year-old boy, has not yet been scheduled.
In the last five years, the archdiocese has settled some 50 lawsuits against Mr. Geoghan for a total of more than $10 million. Eighty-four lawsuits are pending.
Mr. Geoghan's court-appointed criminal defense lawyer, Geoffrey Packard, declined to comment on the charges. Mr. Geoghan does not have a lawyer in the civil cases and is not contesting the charges.
Mr. Geoghan was declared indigent by the state two years ago after he reported income too low to afford a private lawyer. His lack of assets would make it difficult for plaintiffs to collect any damages from him in a civil suit. But The Boston Globe reported today that seven years ago, Mr. Geoghan sold his half share of two houses for a dollar each to a family trust controlled by his sister. The newspaper said the two houses are together worth $895,000 to $1.3 million.
Last week, months after it was disclosed in court documents that Cardinal Law knew in 1984 that Mr. Geoghan had been accused of and treated for pedophilia, the cardinal issued an emotional apology for having allowed Mr. Geoghan to continue serving as a priest. But Cardinal Law, one of the country's most influential Catholic leaders, said he relied on psychiatric assessments that suggested that Mr. Geoghan was cured.
"I was aware that there had been prior instances because I had gotten evaluations," the cardinal said in a news conference.
The cardinal's words did not satisfy those who said Mr. Geoghan molested them.
"The apology was very hollow and bordering on insulting," said Mark Keane, 32, who said he was molested by Mr. Geoghan after he was assigned to St. Julia's parish in 1984. "You put this person who molested hundreds of children in a parish, it blows my mind. This man that was wise enough to become cardinal was not wise enough to know not to put this man with children."
Mr. Geoghan's accusers were similarly unhappy with Vatican rules, announced last week, that required bishops to report accusations of child sexual abuse directly to the Vatican. They criticize the rules because they allowed such accusations to remain confidential. Cardinal Law went further last week for his archdiocese, saying clergy members who knew of such accusations must report them to state authorities unless they were divulged in confession.
"Father Geoghan told the children to keep it secret," said Mitchell Garabedian, the lawyer for most of the civil plaintiffs. "The church kept it secret. Now the Vatican has issued guidelines that these things be kept secret."
Later this month, there will be a little less secrecy in the Geoghan case. Under a judge's order in the civil suits, thousands of pages of records, reports, church personnel files and depositions that the church sought to keep sealed will become public.

Rutherford! Rutherford! Rutherford!
by Defender inone factor that helped me see the watchtower in a different light was reading information about judge rutherford.. i found out that what the society says about rutherford, and what apparently the reality was were two different things.. the first thing that amazed me was finding out that while he was president of the society, and probably even before, he never went out in service.

Thankyou for your elaborate explaination of the truth about the founders of the WTS. It is so sad that one's can be so deceived by the very ones that Jesus warned us about.
Can a lie change into truth? The leaders now of the WTS label the lies as "truth" in its dark stages. They call the changes "new light."
Thanks again for helping us to see the real truth.Pureheart

"Stupid...Hateful..Evil.."?
by Englishman inat first glance, most people would say that there are lots of very good jws around.
ok, we reason, maybe they are a little misguided, but most of them mean well.
we particularly like to think that way about our friends and loved ones who are in the organisation, we dont want to regard them as being unkind and uncaring.

Pureheart
Englishman,
I concur with your findings. Most of the Witnesses that I personally know are evil natured and mean. The sad part is, that they become that way after becoming JWs.Pureheart

An Opinion Question

Don't burn your bridges! Of the three that you mentioned, drift away if you must. But, pull in from time to time if you feel like it.

The Debate: Do JW's Need Respect?
by Mindchild inthis thread will hopefully serve as the platform for a friendly debate about the issue of how much respect the watchtower society deserves from ex-jehovah's witnesses.
do we blast the hell out of the borg and don't let a kind word in edgewise?
do we acknowledge that they have done some things right and (shudder) even good?

I went back and read the beginnings of JWs. Russell was just another man that was ambitious in his quest for spiritual leadership. He had the resources to start building a religious empire. Everyone else that came along after him had his or her own ambitious ideas. Maybe in the beginning honest hearted ones felt that being part of the empire was God’s will, and “sold their lives to it.” After finding out that the empire was not what it was trumped up to be, they could not get out without suffering loss. And so they stay, and to stay sane, they continually convince themselves that it is the “truth.” In their hearts they know that things are not right, but they are caught up in a crazy maze. Example:
Circuit Overseer: Was raised in the “truth” to go as high up in the organization as possible. In order too achieve that goal must keep his nose clean; be obedient to all organizational laws. He does all of that. He is finally appointed as Circuit Overseer. He will do “anything” he is told to hold that position. Will “justify” any situation that his conscience does not agree with, because he has too much to lose. His whole world is the WTS and its goings on. Does he still believe that it is the “truth?” He doesn’t want to think about it.
This scenario can apply to any JW. Do they deserve respect? Yes! Why? First of all every human being deserves to maintain their dignity and because they are pitiful slaves of each other, and that is pitiful.
