  Question for Yeru

  hi yeru, this is a catholicism question (as in i'm curious - i'm not throwing daggers one unique thing about ministry within the catholic church; were i to decide to become a deacon, my wife's conduct would not be a factor, however, if my wife said "no, he can't do it!

  " the church would not allow me to be a deacon.

  i wonder how many jw wives would say no to their hubbies seeking priveleges if they were allowed?.

  Gotcha, as for your reply. Then again, how would I know which of the many Catholic churches around here belong to the Latin Rite, or Marionite? Or are the vast majority in North America of the Latin Rite? Around here (Quebec, Canada) every small village usually has quite an impressive Catholic church. As far as my experience goes, none of the priests were married, so they would of necessity be of the Latin Rite, right? But in urban centres with hundreds and hundreds of churches, do I assume that they are of the Latin Rite? I lived in a Greek area of Montreal and they referred to themselves as Greek Orthodox, not Catholic. Is it the same thing? And why would Greeks be allowed to marry and not their English-speaking brethren?

  As you can see, not only the JWs have me confused :)

  first, thanks for the dozens of you who sent me notes of encouragement.

  i've tried to answer as many as i could but i was overwhelmed by your kind thoughts.. my suicidal thoughts have disappeared and have been gone for the past 2 weeks.

  i see my therapist again next week.

  Hi Yeru, this is a Catholicism question (as in I'm curious - I'm not throwing daggers ). I was born and brought up in a predominantly Catholic area - I mean, Catholic as in Ireland of years ago, pictures of the parish priest on the walls, pictures of the Pope all over - very committed Catholics. I was raised more or less a JW (my father was an alcoholic, never got involved in any religion). You mentioned in your reply to Skeptically Yours:

  Deacons can be married but priests cannot. What if you decided to become a priest and you're already married, then what? The only differentiation ever explained to me by so many Catholics was lay-person and priest, then of course bishop, cardinal, etc., who all have to follow the vow of celibacy. As JWs of course, (and I was Miss Super-Witness at the time) we made much of the fact that priests can't marry and then quoted scriptures to prove they were wrong, blah, blah, blah (you must know the routine). At no time do I recall being told that deacons could marry. It may have taken the wind out of our sails somewhat if someone had mentioned it. So, back to my question, what if you decided to study for the priesthood, being married - would you be able to?

  WT goofie phrases.

  i used to get into trouble for making light of the these phrases that some elders have told me are to be used only gods people.

  lol that you all may know maybe:.

  "well, brother that is very "commendable," just before the meeting ends the po says to those in attendance "brothers the time left is reduced," i once heard a co say to those seated during one of his talks "well now, we don't want to die at armageddon now do we, well of course not.

  They are always "eagerly anticipating" everything: the next talk on the assembly, the next magazine, the next CO visit, Armageddon (that's a really big "eagerly anticipating"

  i was brought up as a jo ho, as my friends called me and its amazing so many people have exactly the same experiences.. quite comforting.

  Welcome Vanilla! I too was amazed at how many other people felt exactly the same way I did; I previously thought I was the only one with such doubts, questions, conflicting emotions, etc. but now realize how much I (and you) have in common with so many others.

  Going door to door in extreme weather

  this morning as i got up, it was 0 f outside.

  this morning at 9 o'clock as usual the same witnesses will go door to door at this temperature.

  i already saw them going door to door at -25 f. i wonder what it would take for them to say it is too cold or too hot to go out in the field service?

  Bread bags - ah yes, bread bags. Or any plastic bag that fit around your foot. We'd wear a pair of socks, stick our feet into plastic bags, then sometimes another pair of socks would go on. That would be in case someone invited us in to sit down and it looked really strange to pull off your boot and have plastic bags hanging out of them.

  The plastic was supposed to be very good insulation in the cold weather. What a weird religion.

  i just got off the phone with carla.

  carla and paula's mother has just passed away.

  carla said that paula had been checking her post on and off all through the night and that it gave her much comfort in knowing that so many replied and showed that they cared.

  Personal Story

  i am fairly new to this board, but already familiar with many of your stories.

  it seems the list is endless for people touched by the jws.

  my story starts at 16. my parents showed me amazing love, but i was a typical teenager.
