I tend to think that joining the JWs is a rational choice, not the product of mind control or manipulation.
Oh? How much rational choice does a 9 yr old have? Or even a teen? How many teens you know make rational decisions all the time?
here is a youtube video showing a wt article trying to explain how it is not a cult, but contradicts itself and undoes their own reasoning:.

WTBS has cultish behavior. Of course, they themselves will not admit it. And I defending them until I left. That's the thing about cults, you don't know you are in one until if you leave, if you can leave.
Sure, one can become a JW freely. But what of born-ins? We are basically forced to be baptized and eat, think, sleep JW doctrine all the time. And if anyone decides to leave, you are shunned like a leper. There is no "hey, JW didn't work out for you? Ok, no prob. We still love you. Come back when you're ready". It's more like a boot to your arse. And if you want to come back, you have to be in limbo for some indeterminate amount of time. You have to get rid of any "wordly friends" you may have made but you still can't talk to your JW friends.
i've finally get my hands on a pdf of one of the two newly released brochures, this one entitled "who are doing jehovah's will today?".
here's a link so you can download your own copy.... http://www66.zippyshare.com/v/98881625/file.html.
predictably, the brochure is extremely vague on key topics.
If JW is so spirit-directed, why is the GB always old white men? What happened to the diversity? WBTS is just like any other corporation or even worse.
PS I'm having trouble d/l the file in chrome
i'm sure this question has been raised a lot but it is always good to look back.
the last 5 or 6 years of me being a jw, i did not have a very good go of it.
one thing i actually did enjoy was going to the international convention.
the yearly conventions cuz this was the only family "vacation" we got.
i am just curious about this because although i agree with many of the posters here that the wt society is guilty of many horrible deeds, i still believe they are right when it comes to doctrinal things as i mention.
especially hellfire.
i just don't see how anybody that has studied the bible for many years like many of the ex-jws here can make an about face and go back to believing hellfire.
hellfire - no, not literally. I believe that hellfire was a made up thing by the folks back then that didn't understand the earth's literal fiery core. Watch the documentary Gates of Hell for food for thought.
Trinity - as father son and holy ghost, no. I believe in the concept of the triple Goddess (maiden, mother, crone) and triple God (child, warrior, sage). These are stages of our life.
Immortality of soul - if soul is defined as our essence then yes. our essence is energy and energy can not be created or destroyed, it just changes form. once our essence leaves our physical body it returns to the universe. in what form, I don't know.
my review article for the sparlock video was just put up on adventures in poor taste.
it's not in their usual format to post religious articles so i'm really happy they decided to push it through anyway.

i was raised as a jw and i haven't been to a meeting in about 8 years..
Born in, baptized in 1992, df'd in 1995, kept trying to come back on and off. Said f*** it about 3 yrs ago and rededicated myself to the Goddess in 2011.
As a spinoff question, anyone actually remember the exact date of his/her big dip? I always remember that when JWs got married, the dude would say this is the 2nd most important day of your life with the 1st date being the big dip. Oh, we were told to write down the date in one of those books. Pfft, I don't remember the date nor still have any JW pubs.
i wish i could go back and get away from all the time i spent sitting in those kingdom hall seats.
i wish i could go back and take back all those comments made for the watchtower and book study.. i wish i could go back and take back all the money spent on buying suits and book bags.. i wish i could go back and take all the money......no wait....some of the money that i placed in the donation box.. i wish i could go back and hang with all the friends labeled as bad association.. all in all, i hate that orginization.
the time spent there worrying about my "spirituality" and trying to be happy amongst fakeness.
I get angry because of the following reasons
-explaining to kids why I don't have new clothes for xmas
-declining invitations to birthday parties
-unable to be involved in any after school activities
-not dating or going to prom or any other high school social event
-unable to be happy for my pregnancy at age 16
-still sneaking to have boyfriend at age 19. I still couldn't have phone calls from "boys".
-embarrassed to walk to bookstudy while neighborhood kids are playing outside & generally embarrassed to be JW
-missing Sat morning cartoons
i would like to list 10 facts i have learned since coming on this site ,facts i wasn`t aware of while in the movement and facts that have set me free from a religous movement that really is not interested in facts per se.. these are not listed in order of importance , and feel free to add your own list that applys to your circumstances.
1.the wtb&ts involvement with the u.n.. 2.the wtb&ts investments/shares some of which are questionable.. 3.their real estate properties around the world, millions if not billions, of $$$, while being a not for profit organization.
4.their pretense of obeying the law on" blood" while conveniently adjusting it to minimise their legal obligations in threat of a lawsuit.
The only bittersweet fact I can think of - I'm not the only one who has suffered at the hands of this "org".
here are a few select editorialized quotes from the watchtower summary as presented at the 2012 district convention.. this is from the march study edition, 3/15/2012 page 25, "do not look at the things behind".
i found these first two disturbing as they seem to instill fear, especially in children.
lot's wife suffers painful death by having a scalding brine poured on her (is that how the bible puts it?).
what Baltar said. I remember looking at some documentary that showed pillar statues that looked like people. And the fire that rained from heaven? a meteor.
But I get the point of the OP. The bible said nothing about scalding brine, just said pillar of salt.
