A few summers back I was rollerblading in the park, when some (non-JW) bible thumpers came up to me with this same spiel about their very nice church.
I told them I'm Atheist, thinking they would leave me alone. Boy, was I wrong. Instead they spent the next 30-40 minutes trying to convince me how "weak" the "theory" of evolution is. Too bad they didn't know that I knew exactly what they were going to say before they said it, since I used to say the same things to people back when I was in the bOrg.

in other threads i have outlined when two elders came out to my house to provoke a situation to have reason to df me.
below is a copy of the certified letter i received about two weeks after i threww the two elders out of my house, followed by my reply to the secretary, who is also the elder that instigated the the situation as well as the chair of the judicial hearing they tried to form.. i have edited out personal information as well as his signature, since my wife is still an active dub and has enough trouble with them as it is.

i phoned a friend of mine this evening.
we keep in touch at least once a week and her and her sister (both jw's) have been to visit us for the weekend several times now.
i took the chance and brought up the un thing with her... her immediate reaction?

It is almost like there are "Seven Stages of Dealing With Damning Evidence" (similar to the "Seven Stages of Greif").
Stage 1: Disbelief. "That is *IMMPOSSIBLE!!!! It is obviously an apostate lie. There is *NO WAY* that could be true."
Recalling this stage is significant later on; this reaction implies that if the facts are true then they are significant. You will want to remind the person of this once they get to the later stages which go something like "Well, it was no big deal anyway. It was just to get one little measly library card. Why are you making this into a big issue?"
Unfortunately, it does *NOT* appear that the Final Stage is "Gosh, you are right, the WTB&TS are hypocritical bastards". Rather, most of the time, the seventh stage is more like "Oh well, I must be patient and wait on the bOrg for clarification."

from the awake, feb 22 2002. sorry, if it seems rather late in coming, but after only 7 weeks,.
it was a normal part of my life, and what wasn't normal was having it stay with me throughout my adulthood.. till now now i tell people, i'm an ex jw.
I almost forgot the "flip-side" to this situation. Having the JWs call on you... back when you were still a "Heeb" (to use Beans vernacular).
For some reason, my normally devout family would never take part in the "service afternoon" during the convention. We would just go home early.
On these occasions, people come from all over to convention, so the territories for the city are given to people from way out of town, and it is not worked by the usual local congregation.
So there we were, talking the afternoon off and NOT knocking on doors, relaxing and in short pants and t-shirts, half of our large family doing something on the front lawn (fixing the lawn mower as I recall) when we saw JW "brothers" working their way up the street, door-to-door!!! I noticed some of our neighbours pointing to our house before closing their door. OH NO!!! We've been made!!! BUSTED!!! Caught enjoying an summer afteroon, when we are supposed to be out door-knocking.
These strangers came up our driveway, and said something like "Your neighbours tell us that you are fellow brothers..." Wow, you could have cut the tension with a knife.

Oh man, I hated when we worked an area where my high-school friends lived. All I could do was hope that either (A) no-one was home or (B) their parents didn't recognize me. Fortunately, it didn't happen too often.
Come to think of it, hoping for a not-at-home was good all the time, not just at my friends homes!!!
Come to think of it, I think my dad had the fear of preaching directly to his immediate street neighbours. He (an Elder, and Secretary for many years) never signed out the territory which contained our own home. I don't know if he knew that it would embarras us kids, or perhaps more likely, he knew that it would embarras the hell out of him.
He probably wanted to avoid conversations like this:
My Dad: "... and we are offering this book to our neighbours called Making Your Family Life Happy"
Neighbour: "Yes Mister Mxxxxx, you live just up the road, don't you? Tell me how this book you are trying to sell me, called Making Your Family Life Happy was able to help you deal with that party your eldest son had while you were away last week... you know, the one where the cops had to break it up????"

i was never baptised when i attended the kingdom hall so i went to the meetings with sholder length hair (with my jw parents).
one time i had been approached by the elders concerning this matter.
they asked me if i planned to cut my hair and progress in the truth and get baptised.
For a while I had a goatee, then reduced it to a "soul patch" a.k.a. "flavor saver".
Funny, when I was in, and was in school (University --- EVIL! :) )I got in the habit of not shaving during exams. By the end of the 2-3 weeks, I had quite the growth. Since I would skip meetings during exams (EVIL! :) ) it wasn't a problem.
After one exam period, I decided to keep the beard... neatly trimmed of course... my wife wasn't thrilled, but kinda liked it at the same time... I showed up at the meeting, thinking nothing of it, since I didn't even know that beards were considered "bad".
It was my turn on "roving mics" so at the appropriate time I got up to get the microphone and do my duty... when an elder, whom I will call BRO. EVANSON, (because that is his name) gets up and stops me, and quietly wispers that I "Can't have my privlege, because of the beard." Again, I was young and naive, and had NO IDEA what he was talking about... but I sat down confused, and also HAPPY because I HATED being on "roving mics".
A couple of years later, when I was well on my way OUT, I shaved to go to memorial (my last) again because I had a few weeks growth... and my wife sheepishly says how pleased she is that I shaved for memorial. SHE BECAME REALLY UPSET when I speculated the possibity that that a clean shaved face was a 20th century manifestation and created by the razor companies, and that most likely Jesus and the apostles all had full beards! :)
I since have heard that in Europe, Great Britain, etc, it is OK for a JW to have a beard.... once again, ARBITRAY ENFORCEMENT.

This guy really needed to either (A) review the "modulation" section in the Ministry School or (B) take some Prozac :)
On Saturday morn he would demonstrate his technique for placing magazines, which included shoving the mags into the hands of the unsuspecting householder's hand. He would demonstrate by walking around the room and shoving the mags, and sure enough some unsuspecting bro/sis would instinctively take them from Jack. He would alway hand them off like this, and then explain to the group to notice how it works, without fail.
But I got even.... one time I was sitting next to him, and having seen his technique demonstration before, when he tried to hand me the magazines, I just sat there looking at him, but *NOT* raising my hand to take them from him. There waw a long pause as he glared at me waiting, but when he realized I wasn't taking the bait, he moved on to demonstrate with someone else. Kind of let the air out of his "this always works" theory. :)
BTW, I did this long before I had any doubts, when I was "zealous"... I just didn't like this guy.

yesterday my brother (ever-loyal witness baptized same day as me 10 years ago; who is married to a holier-than-thou regular pioneer and subsequently with her encouragement has since avoided me as much as possible since i da myself) and his wife (see description above) came over to visit.. well.. shooting the proverbial shit, we got to the topic of movies.
asking politely if he or his wife had seen lord of the rings.. she interjected that it was inappropriate because it suggested wizardry and spiritism, and would never see such filth.
trying very hard to remain polite, my mom noticed the pause and said if they wanted to borrow any movies we have on tape to watch at home.. sneaky as i am, while they flapped their gums with my parents i glanced in the bag to see what they borrowed.. they took:.
My parents hypocrisy:
I had them over for the weekend about 18 months ago (they have not been back since, their choice, not mine). A friend at work had strongly recommended the movie "The Usual Suspects". I had never seen it before, but the recommendation was so strong, I rented it as the evening's entertainment.
So we sit through the opening scene, where someone is brutally beat-up or shot or something (I forget which, but is was pretty violent). Then, 5 minutes into the film, there is the scene with all these criminal types together at the police station. Being criminals, thier language was pretty "salty": "F***-this" and "mother-F***er" that... but hey, they are criminals, that choice of dialog was accurate for the scene, no?
Well after about 30 seconds of the language, my parents announce that they can't continue to watch this, because of the language.
They got pretty upset when I pointed out that they weren't offended by the opening scene of violent murder, but simply naughty words were too much to watch. Imagine! Naughty words are worse than murder! Pretty hypocritical.
When my dad sheepishly admitted that he "didn't care for the violence" either (although he didn't complain when it was on-screen, only after when I pointed out his warped sense of values, where swear words are more offensive than scenes of murder) I suggested that he should not read his bible, since it is filled with terribly violent passages.... WOW, he didn't like that at all. :)

Apostate Cocktail, OTOH, in its purest form, contains only liberal quantities of quotes from Jehovah's Witness literature. Nothing else is needed, as the quotes are strong enough on their own to cause deliterious effects. Although some will add other ingredients (like a dose of comparitive review and a splash of logical conclusion) these are not necessary when mixing an Apostate Cocktail.
