A recreation of the appearance of one -- out of thousands, or maybe tens of thousands -- person tortured and killed by the Roman empire.
Nasty, yes,
Sad, true.
Unique???? -- Absolutely not.
I don't understand this fascination with the torture of Jesus of Nazareth. Worse tortures have been inflicted on humans, both back then and also today.
Besides, if he truly knew he was the son of god (or *was* God, depending on where you are on the whole Trinity thing) then at least he would have been able to keep that in his mind, and know that he'd be "home" in 40 days, giving him courage to pass through the temporary pain. Few, if any, of the people tortured by the Romans, had that hope to help them through it. When you think about it, Jesus had an unfair advantage that really would have helped him mentally endure. Doesn't that kind of reduce the importance of "the passion"?
Besides, what does the principle of "atonement" (a life paid as a ransome for a life) have to do with torture? Why focus on the torture?
I'll tell you why. On the TV show Barney Miller there was a scene where an older "Bag Lady" was arrested for stealing dog food. The scene went like this:
Bag Lady: "I don't even own a dog! That food was for ME!!!"
Dietrech: "If you had to steal food, why not steal HUMAN food?"
Bag Lady: "um.... uh... Because dog food is more, uh....."
Dietrech: "... pathetic?"
Bag Lady: "Exactly!!!"

QUOTES.CA What won't the WBTS admit?
by hamsterbait inthe fantastic quotes website said that as of 2005.01.31, the wt has not specified which books, specifically, they feel are still copyright protected.. .
the law is that copyright for an author lasts through his life, and for so many years after his death.
(blondie will confirm this - with a source i betchya-) ::: in order to prove that certain works published years ago are still within the copyright, they would have to admit and confirm who wrote those works.. .
-
Quotes
Neonmadman is correct, the copyright is held by WTB&TS; in this case they don't have to reveal individual or team of authors, but only the original publication date is important.
I think WTS silence on this is more practical: if they acount for the 2 or 3 books on the CD which (I now think may be) still protected, then they are also giving the gren light to me releasing the other 14 - 15 books on the CD, which would therefore be unprotected. And you know they don't want that!
Heck, they could have just listed the (supposedely) protected works in their original C&D; instead they resorted to the amorphous "many" -- their lawyers speak with the same shocking imprecision as the Watchtower and Awake!. Maybe they got their college/law degree from four years of reading the Watchtower??? ;) -

================
quotes, if it redirected to your site, wouldn't that be a bit obvious to your opponents? Couldn't you get into trouble for that?
===============
Nope, I don't think so. I have no control over what other people do with their domain names. As long the domain is beyond "arms reach" of my control (which it is) I am not worried.
While we are on the topic, are there any JWDers in other lands that can register watchtower.xx???? (Unless of course WTS learned their lesson and went out and grabed it in every single country). -

Faders: What if we transfer our records to an out of state congo
by xjwms in.
about 100 - 200 miles from were we live, lets say we have the records transfered to a different congo.. no one there would know us, and if we never move there, ... now what.. how would they ask, "if you want to be jw's anymore?

Quotes
I know of one XJW (not me) that successfully had their Publisher's Record cards sent to a co-conspirator. Officially, that XJW is "out of the system". The old cong. thinks he's moved, and since his cards aren't really at a new cong., no one is checking up on him to catch him committing some gross sin, like, for example, saying "God Bless You" when someone sneezes.
This plan requires knowledge of the (elder) system, and a co-conspirator that can pass as an elder over the phone. Oh, the co-conspirator should live far, far away, perhaps even in another country.
It has worked before, and it could work again. Until the WTS drones read this, and pass word to the Dub-Burning Body, and "New Arrangements" are introduced. -

"This Generation" change -- fallout evidence?
by reagan_oconnor ini was reading the recent posts on 2034 and was wondering... .
the 1975 debacle left the fds scrambling for explanations for the mass exodus of r&f who were disillusioned by their bs.
the pat answer has always been, "those people didn't keep pace with god's chariot" and they weren't "strong in the truth" and allowed something so "minor" to "stumble" them.

I don't have evidence, but i would like to quote this garybuss post from another thread regarding the acceptance of the UN mess:
=====================
This is a group that actually thrives on adversity and disconfirmations. The Witnesses people actually seem immune to fact and reason.
It boils down to costs and benefits. What will it cost them to stay? Nothing! What will it cost them to leave? A LOT!
There is already a HUGE number of reasons to leave and those don't bother THEM. In my opinion the UN issue is much less of a problem than the change in the promised reward that occurred in 1995. They lost the "generation of 1914". They lost the "other sheep". They lost the "great crowd". Basically, they lost the promise they were all working for.
Their strong rigid beliefs were replaced by mush in 1995. Their leaders quit in 2000. The religion was divorced from the parent corporation in 2000. The writers say they don't know much of anything. The demands on the members are raised. None of this has an effect on people who like being Witnesses. In my opinion, nothing will.

To shun or not to shun...
by kj inhas there been any "new light" recently about how to treat disfellowshipped family members?

As recently as the August 2002 Kingdom Ministry, they recalled the April 15, 1988 Witchpower, and said:
====================
"It might be possible to have almost no contact at all with the relative. Even if there were some family matters requiring contact, this certainly would be kept to a minimum,"

How the WTBS sets itself up to be wrong.
by JeffT ini'm writing an essay on "a personal exprience with religious fanaticism" (i'll post it here when i'm done, although it is intended for a non jw audience).
this has led me to doing a lot of research and i was really struck by something last night.
no matter what the subject the watchtower has to have a single right answer.

Quotes
Stated less eloquently:
The WTS paints itself into a corner. Then denies that it did the painting, denies the existence of the paint, denies the existence of the corner, and frequently then walks through the paint to another corner. It then denies the existence of their footsteps in the paint they just walked through, because (a) there is no paint! and (b) they don't walk anyway, they float on air!. Besides, they were always in the second corner anyways; the new corner is just an "adjustment" from the other side of the room.
