Phizzy, As an American I take exception with your characterization of our country. But on the other hand I must admit I fully agree with it!

What "message" does the J.W Org. have to offer that will attract new members ?
by Phizzy inthe message they have been pushing for 150 years or so is "the end is near !"..
in the educated, civilised world, people think " yea ?
maybe because of economic meltdown exacerbated by climate change, but not from some intervention by a non-existent god".. "would you like a free bible study ?

Is 1st Century advice on marriage still relevant in today’s modern world?
by liam inrepublicans want to make a law that forbids ‘uncontested divorce”.
they based this on this scripture.. matthew 19. is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”.
4 “haven’t you read,” jesus replied, “that at the beginning the creator ‘made them male and female,’and said, ‘for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’ so they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Not all Republicans are opposed to uncontested divorce. Gov Ronald Reagan of California signed into law the first no fault divorce law in the US back in 1969.
Gov Reagan also signed into law in 1967 a ban on open carry of guns.
Republicans sure are different today...

Rattigan350: Assuming that because there have been some students arrested for rioting that a University education is bad is like assuming that because some Jehovahs Witnesses have been convicted of child sexual abuse that all Jehovahs Witnesses are bad.

The self-appointed "slave" said this - in 1935
by BoogerMan inwatchtower august 15th 1935 - "...the greatest of all tribulations mentioned in the scriptures must come after the great multitude appears and must be that which is mentioned by christ jesus as “tribulation such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time.” that tribulation period began with the “day of jehovah”, to wit, in 1914, when the war started against satan’s organization in heaven, and reaches the great climax at the time of the battle of armageddon, the great day of god almighty.
110 years - and counting!.
other denominations claim the great tribulation is only going to last for 7 years.
-

The watchtower taught that the "great tribulation" began in 1914 until 1969 when they changed the belief to the great tribulation starting at some future point (but with the lifetime of the generation of 1914).

A Modest proposal to solve the 1914 problem
by r51785 inthroughout watchtower history dates have been a problem.
the usual solution for failed prophetic dates has been to kick the can down the road.
this needs to be done with 1914. the generation that will never pass away is now 110 years old and therefore is past its useful life span.

Scholar:
You say:
"Nothing needs to be done about 1914 for it is rock solid..."
Is that "rock solid" like the Great Pyramid?

Throughout Watchtower history dates have been a problem. The usual solution for failed prophetic dates has been to kick the can down the road. This needs to be done with 1914. The generation that will never pass away is now 110 years old and therefore is past its useful life span. The best thing to do would be to find a more recent date to replace 1914 ( kind of like when the Judge replaced 1874 with 1914). I have a proposal. I apologize if someone has already brought this up, but I haven't seen it mentioned.
1914 is based on a period called "The Seven Gentile Times." The Watchtower says that this is the period from the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in 607 BCE to Jesus coming into kingdom power (invisibly) in 1914. The calculation is: seven times equals seven lunar years of 360 days (7 x 360 days = 2520 days). Days are converted to years thus giving us 2520 years. From 607 BCE to 1914 CE is 2520 years. But what if new light reveals that seven times is actually seven solar years? That would mean each year or "time" would be 365.25 days (365.25 x 7 = 2556.75). That means that instead of the "Seven Gentile Times" being 2520 years they would be 2556.75 years. Thus counting 2556.75 years from 607 BCE we would end at the summer of 1951. The generation of 1951 is only 73 years old! No more overlap needed!
Of course 1914 is greatly favored because World War I started. But bad things happened in 1951 as well. For instance the evil United Nations moved into its New York headquarters directly across the river from the world headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses. The first thermonuclear bomb was exploded. The Cold War and the Korean War. The first Jack in the Box fast food restaurant opened in San Diego. "I Love Lucy" had its television premier. (Just kidding about Lucy).
If the Governing Body likes my idea they are free to use it. All I ask in return is a lakeside villa in upstate New York.

The mark of the beast is on the head or hand. You cannot buy or sell without the mark. The number is 666. I believe that the mark of the beast is the iPhone. You hold the iPhone in your hand and place it against your head. You cannot buy or sell without it. If you add 6+6+6 you get 18. When the iPhone 18 is released then will come the rapture and tribulation. Since we are on iPhone 14, there is not much time left.

So, 60 Years Ago
by titch inso, folks, 60 years ago, starting on september 1st, i believe, we, local witnesses in southern california, had the "privilege" of attending the "around the world assembly", at, of all places, the rose bowl, in pasadena.
(i think that it was an 8-day assembly) i was 9 years old then, almost ready to start 4th grade.
so, was anyone else, on this site, at that assembly?

I too was nine years old in 1963 and in attendance at Pasadena. The heat was brutal. Since our family was on vacation and from outside of California we took one day out of the eight to go to Disneyland. Much better use of our time. At the same time as we were in Pasadena, Billy Graham was holding a crusade across town at the Los Angeles Coliseum. We outdrew him which was proof of God's favor on us. The smog was really bad, after 8 days my lungs (unused to Los Angeles air) were hurting. I got sick one day from bad cafeteria food. Fred Franz gave what seemed like a ten hour talk one night (probably only three) on the subject Babylon the Great Has Fallen, God's Kingdom Rules. The book by the same name was released. I wonder how much if anything in that book is still taught as "truth" by Jehovahs Witnesses.
Brutal heat, rain, food poisoning, smog, unbearably long and boring talks -- what a blessing!!?? At least I got to go to Disneyland.

Clever Misdirection
by TD ini was looking at the (mostly) wrong answers to a riddle that's making the rounds on social media and thought it was a good example of how something simple (in this case, grade school math) can be distorted with words.
the riddle goes like this:.
i bought a cow for $800.. i sold it for $1000.
-
r51785
Since you bought the cow and sold it, and then bought it again and sold it, could we say we had an "overlapping cow?"
