The Jehovah's Witnesses believe the theme of the Bible is a "Universal Court Case" with Jehovah as the accused and Satan as the accuser. Only a religion invented by a lawyer and currently run by lawyers could come up with such an idea.
The Jehovah's Witnesses are the quintessential American religion reflecting two of the most obnoxious American obsessions from the previous two centuries. From the nineteenth century we have Millenarianism (I hope I spelled that right!) And from the twentieth century we have excessive litigiousness.
I feel sorry for all the non-Americans who got suckered into this fine piece of American cultural imperialism.

by sawthelight insince phobia means "afraid of", i think the term homophobia should be clarified.
to most people i would be considered homophobic, howeve, i'm not afraid of homos, i just don't like them.

I believe that homosexuality is a sin, which makes the homosexual just like every other human on earth -- a sinner. Having said that, I do not dislike homosexuals anymore than I dislike one of my friends who routinely breaks the speed limit when he drives his car -- which also is a sin. I feel comfortable around the homosexuals that I know as well as the speeders.

As William F. Buckley has pointed out, homophobia literally means a fear of one's own kind. However in our culture it has come to mean a fear of homosexuals. To be true to the language one should one should characterize a fear of homosexuals as homosexualphobia, but this is overlong so I suppose the widely used homophobia will suffice.

Prevalence of JW Suicides - Real or Imagined?
by AMNESIAN inin one or two recent threads i've seen reference to the possibility of a rising number of jw suicides being another of the organization's very dark realities about which it is vigilant in keeping concealed from its pub populace.
is there anyone reasonably informed regarding this?
is there reason to suppose the incidence ratio among jws is any higher than among any peoples/religion?

Of course everyone gets depressed. I get depressed everytime I pay my bills, how the damn electric company takes advantage of people with their high rates, how the phone company screws you if you don't have a special long distance plan.
I get depressed everytime I have to fill up the gas tank of my car. I get depressed when after a long night of sleep, my body still aches and I feel more tired than when I went to bed. I'm depressed that I have to pay over 800 dollars of taxes every friecking month plus 250 dollars more for taxes from my house.
You seem overly concerned about material things. Perhaps you should follow the advice of Jesus Christ:

hopefully, you can add some of yours.. while pioneering in upstate ny, my sister and i had frequent occasions to work in service with a married pioneer couple.
yes, they were window washers, but that's not the real story here.. they had a return visit on an elderly gentleman who was kind enough to take the magazines every once in a while.

Headquarters of 'TBN'--vs. Brooklyn
by LDH ini was in los angeles over the weekend (weather was gorgeous, what else is new?)..
we stayed in costa mesa at the westin south coast plaza, right off of the 405 and bristol street.. as we exited, imagine my surprise upon looking to the right hand side of the road and seeing a palatial looking building with the logo for the trinity broadcasting network diplayed!
wow, was it disgusting!.

So Who's An Evil Slave Then?
by Englishman inin my teenage years, my father elected to serve where the need is great.
the end result was that we upped roots and moved to yeovil in deepest, darkest somerset, cider-drinkin country where most of the locals were yokels.. the tiny congregation, about 30 or so, met in a hired 2 storey hall on the edge of town, a building that had been used by the jw s for many, many years.
the 2 storey building shared toilet facilities on the ground floor.. the first day that we attended a meeting in yeovil was strange to say the least!

I'm sure the coastal guns up on Point Loma (the ones near Farkel's house in OB) would have knocked out any Japanese invasion fleet before they could attack Kensington and capture the Judge alive (isn't that why they started the war, so they could capture Jehovah's faithful and discreet slave?).
