An outsider might view it as "Temptation Night" at the Jehovah Witness church. All the members are offered wine and all refuse it (except for a few who give into "temptation."

Memorial Weirdness
by Ding inthose of us with a watchtower background probably see the memorial as normal.. at least, we're used to it.. we can forget how weird it seems to an outsider.. it's like inviting a group out to dinner, having meals placed on the table, and then explaining to them why no one present should be partaking of any of it because it's really intended for someone else..

What Turns The Average "Worldly" Person Away From The Witnesses?
by minimus inis it their door-to-door incessant preaching?
is it their view on blood?
is it that the religion itself is simply often misunderstood?.

Arrogance and stupidity are such an unattractive combination.

Frederick Franz, "Bible Scholar"
by Quendi inas some of you know by now, i spent sunday, 7 august, renewing ties with a dear friend.
we're both disfellowshipped, the difference between us being he is seeking reinstatement and i am not.
we got into some very spirited discussions on different bible topics and one of them was the value of the new world translation itself.

That Fred Franz is regarded by JW's as a great scholar proves the old saying, "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."

Who wrote the May 22, 1969 Awake article "What Future for the Young"?
by VM44 indoes anyone know who wrote the may 22, 1969 awake!
article, "what future for the young?"?.
i wonder if they still are at bethel.. .

Ah yes, but remember 28 years prior to that article Judge Rutherford in his literary classic "Children" instructed his followers not to marry or procreate. If only they had listened in 1941 the Awake wouldn't have had to tell their children in 1969 that they had no future! Today the Awake can tell the great grandchildren of the 1941 "generation" that they should not marry or procreate. Or maybe I have this wrong. Maybe the children who heard received Rutherford's book in 1941 are members of the same "generation" as today's teenagers. I mean after all, "generations" have been know to overlap.

The Economics Thread

Unless of course the lumber purchased prevented the house from losing $150 in value (repair of a fence perhaps). But don't ask me, I'm just John Maynard Keynes, what would I know about Economics.

Bros before ... on the watchtower CD
by bohm inbelow are the average occurances of specific words plottet as a function of year for the watchtower.
the occurences has been normalized such that for instance an occurance of 0.1 correspond to the given word being used an average of 0.1 times per page in the watchtower for that year.
(a page is assumed to contain 3000 characters).. any good ideas?

Correction to above: In line 3 I meant during the time of de-emphasis.

Regarding the downward trend in the use of the word ministry: In the 70's they de-emphasized the word ministry in favor of the word service. Our Kingdom Ministry became Our Kingdom Service. Prior to this time all JW's were said to be "ordained ministers." During the period of emphasis only elders, MS and pioneers were "ordained ministers." If I remember correctly this change was made due to research on the book "Aid to Bible Understanding." As you may remember this book was largely worked on by Raymond Franz. After they showed him the door they went back to their old beliefs regarding "ordained ministers" and put the name back to Our Kingdom Ministry.

Let me see if I understand this: An elder from a church which is in reality a multi-level marketing religious scheme is trying to start his own multi-level marketing business scheme. Who would have ever thought it ???
