My sister and I also got 'counseled' for flipping each other the bird during a meeting. I remember the sister doing the 'counseling' had a permanently scarred, bent nose from repeated beatings from her 'opposing' husband.

When I was a teen I wore a denim dress with an open back to the Book Study one night. Mind you, our book study was probably made up of 10 people.
The dress was made very plain in the front, high-necked and short-sleeved and fitted. Came below the knees, in fact it looked a lot like a cheongsam in the front, but NOT SKIN TIGHT. The back was a large diamond-shaped cutout but nothing crazy. Just my mid-back exposed. I had NOTHING else clean to wear and in fact had a coat on most of the time. Later that night, my elder dad was approached by a 'brother' who apparently had a 'problem' with the dress.
Another time, we were at a 'get-together' and all us young people were running around roughhousing as young folks are apt to do. The son of the house, a JW, was a very good friend, really more like my brother. Anyway, somebody had a camera and all us young folks were horsing around, laughing and snapping silly shots.
*I* was heavily 'counseled' for a photo of myself sitting on his back. This while fully-clothed, in a huge crowd of adults. I think he was 'counseled' too.

Anti-College/Pro-Pioneering Convention Interviews
by Rohag inhere's the text of interviews from the friday afternoon "young people - walk by holy spirit in the congregation" presentation at a 2008 jehovah's witness district convention.
this transcription approximately covers the second half of the presentation.
i've omitted names and locations to preserve individuals' privacy.

I'm almost 98% positive that I have heard that first "experience" before at a DC in the past. The technical school, the going to summer school for six weeks and "graduating an entire year early!" rings very familiarly

How much of a role in Brainwashing did the songs actually play?
by KW13 inthose haunting words...those out of tune dubs...wailing...moanin...then i wake up :p lol i am kidding, but i remember 'snippets' of a lot of songs, all of which focused on me being submissive (for example song number 8, my favourite as a child dub).
does singing help brainwash sheep?

"Loyally Submitting to Theocratic Order"
"The Shulamite Remnant" ---I recently got a good look at the lyrics and thought to myself, "What sort of lyrics are these for a WEDDING song?" But a wedding march down a KH aisle to any other song was downright blasphemy where I'm from. I remember one young sister who went down the aisle to the Isleys' "Between The Sheets" instrumental. I don't think the older members had a clue, though.
My toddler and I had quite an entertaining time on this site:
http://d21c.com/ljesun/KMelodies.html
I sang in my best opera voice whilst using a paintbrush for a mike and using the keyboard rest as a makeshift piano. She, of course, has never been to a KH and was just following my lead. I'm a little rusty on the lyrics, and could only sing along with the songs that have the lyrics attached.

Why do many JWs neglect their health conditions?
by navytownroger inmy former bible study conductor has heart problems and very high blood pressure, but doesn't seem concerned about it.
another witness i knew had heart problems but never went to doctors, & eventually dropped dead suddenly.
given that cigarette smoking is a disfellowshipping offense, why aren't jws reprimanded when they otherwise neglect & jeopardize their health?

My mom (still a JW) is always quoting some new study on the powers of some natural food or product. She's always collecting 'healthy' recipes from all different sources. She meticulously marks certain ones and checks off lists. She has been doing this for years, but I have yet to see her actually buy ingredients for, or actually prepare, any of the hundreds of healthy recipes she collects.
To my knowledge, she has not had a 'female' exam in almost 30 years. She will, occasionally, visit a doctor for her eyes or teeth. She has an 'average' daily diet and is still at a very trim, healthy weight. In spite of it all, compared with most female JWs her age I've seen, she's actually healthy.

A lot of JW's are highly skeptical of Dr.'s. I frequently heard remarks such as, Dr's don't know anything, they just want your money. And they are part of "Satan's system" and they have a "worldly education" as opposed to being educated by Jehovah.
Now this is the sentiment amongst most of the JW's I know and grew up with. I also see the ones who have the above-quoted sentiment, but have just about every single herbal book made by mankind. And just about every single herbal remedy, too. Most of the "herbal" JW's I know like this, are still EXTREMELY unhealthy--they can quote word for word almost every single new study about how this or that herb is good for XYZ, but never make a single change healthwise, never see any sort of medical OR herbal health provider---other than purchasing yet another book about it or buying the herbal product. Yeah, non-JW's do this too, but it's amazing how many JW's I know do this. My sister and I went to a DC the summer before last. Previously, we hadn't been in over 10 years. We were both standing in awe at the walking refrigerators clogging the hallways. The sisters, particularly. All massively obese, exhausted, tired and slow. It was actually quite eerie.

What is your strangest "supernatural" JW story?
by donny ini had just became a witness and a guy i worked with, who was also a jw, told me a story that actually made me laugh and i think it upset him a bit.
the storys were almost always in the third person.
it went as follows.. this brothers wife and him were sitting at the kingdom hall on the end seats of the row next to the back of the room.

Another one:
A teenaged JW boy was ordered to burn his KISS albums in the back yard. While they were being consumed in the fire, two human eyes rose up from the smoke looking at him and blinking until they disappeared.
Heard the Smurf one---all these stories were related to me in the third person as well

Dating in the KH-funny stories.
by QuestioningEverything inmy 28y old nephew was dating a 'sister' from another congregation.
he recently bought his own home.
i stopped by there to drop off something.

When I was about 18-19, I was 'dating' a JW brother. To the consternation of my elder father, this young man was 1) spiritually spotless, not sure if he was a ministerial servant but if not, he was on his way; 2) had no 'prior record'; 3) was a very nice person; and 4) was also over 18.
So my dad used the only ammo he had left--since I was 'still under his roof', I had to have strict chaperoning any time I was around this young man. I didn't like many people so it was difficult trying to consider a 'suitable' chaperone. So when one night we planned to go to the movies and dinner, he promised to bring his friend "George"...
...To my EXTREME mortification, "George" turned out to be a dull, obese brother in his 50's, in a 3-piece plaid suit (this was NOT the 1970s) and horrible fedora hat. He looked completely uncomfortable and embarrassed as well.
I mean, really.....the date and I were both dressed very casually. Needless to say, we only made it to the local convenience store for gas before I requested that I be taken back home. I remember thinking how utter ridiculous the entire thing was....even though I was 'born in' and knew nothing about dating, it was like I knew that dating wasn't supposed to be this miserable.

One Paper Towel
by DT inthe district conventions i went to always had signs in the restrooms asking people to only take one paper towel.
i've heard other people mention this too.
is this typical at conventions?
-
razorMind
I personally have never seen the 'one-paper-towel' rule enforced at any of the conventions when I was a J.W. (thank god)
I do remember. vaguely, one solitary year that the mirrors were covered. I didn't know it was only the women's restrooms. Somebody must have objected, or maybe the brown paper cost too much, or something, because they were never covered again. And we went to the conventions at the same site for years and years and years.

Got a few giggles from another discussion board RE: "Why don't JWs vote?"
by razorMind inre: serena williams' comments about jws not voting......of course the non-jw members wanted to know why.. the first giggle i got from all the non-jws posting who wanted to know why she could dress so skimpily, pursue her tennis career and wrap herself in the american flag while still proclaiming to be a jw.
i'd go so far as to say all of the non-jw posters were questioning this.. the second giggle was the expected knee-jerk defensive reaction from the jws on the board......i.e., "here we go judging people from appearance again," and "how come nobody's judging this celebrity/that celebrity?".
then, the expected "how come everybody hates jws" comment from another one.

Her post is, I think, near the bottom on page 5. She's the one hefting the 2 blue drinks.
Maybe her outfit isn't THAT 'clubbish', but still.....
.....when I clicked on her profile, I thought I had the wrong person.....
