  My parents thought the end was so near that they held me back from even starting kindergarten for a year. They said the end was going to be here any minute, so why put her in school? I graduated 10 years ago.

  Wait a minute.....my parents kept me out of kindergarten too!!! And the year would've been 1975 that I started. You know, I never got an explanation for that, either.

  And I really REALLY could've used kindergarten, as I had an extremely hard 1st grade. 1st grade back then, where I'm from, isn't like 1st grade now--very strict and regimented, and we DID NOT get out of school early like the kindergartens did. I was too little to understand why I went from happily carefree, playing at home all day...to riding in a BUS full of strangers to sit in a desk with more strangers all day. At least kindergarten had all those toys. I used to pass by the kindergarten rooms, wishing I could play in the toy kitchen, and with the dollhouse. I would ride to school screaming crying and pounding on the bus doors every morning, trying to escape. I'd fight the bus drivers, the teachers, everybody. My mom got called to school to come get me almost every day. This went on for about a month.

  My younger siblings went to kindergarten. They'd spend only a few hours in school. Hmm, I know if I asked my parents, I'd not get a straight answer. But I bet that's why they kept me out of kindergarten. They'd do that type of thing.

  DRESS TO IMPRESS?

  most years, my old congregation would get asked for volunteers to clean and garden our assembly hall.. as you all well may have observed, at such occasions at your hall, all the youngsters would use this oppertunity to show the opposite sex, just what they looked like in their 'civvys' (leisure-wear) !.

  i knew one sister that used to make her own clothes and would make this, sort of andy-pandy suit.

  she would use some sort of candy-striped bed linen-sort-of-material, usually pastel coloured and make a kind of all-in-one romper-cum-knicker-bocker-pedal-pusher-number?

  During some of the very last DC's I would attend, I remember the young guys changing clothes after the conventions so that they could, theoretically, "help clean the assembly hall."

  What it really amounted to was, seeing who could parade the latest Polo, Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger, F.U.B.U., etc. and look the most "fly".

  In my day, (late '80's-early '90's) some of the teen girls equated "really stylish" with "let-me-throw-on-a-prom-dress-and-look-hotter-than-any-other-chick-and-pick-me-up-a-REAL-HOT-YOUNG-BROTHER!!!" Yup, metallic evening gowns at the district conventions.

  Sadly, I think we all know what 80's prom dresses looked like.

  i just saw a dub at lunch time, in manhattan, on a busy street, looking like a human magazine rack.. .

  my question is, did you ever get embarrased standing in such a public place?

  Oh, God, yes. For me this was one of the worst. Especially in the rich white neighborhoods. Having to walk up to a stranger's door, and have them look down at and talk down to you (a kid!) with utter contempt.

  Sheer, pure, fucking HELL is what is was for me.

  one of the best tools the elders have to counsel the congregation is the local needs part.

  how does one usually get picked for this talk?

  generally, during an elder's meeting, one elder will have his pet peeve.he convinces the body that this issue has to be handled by the body.

  Shoot, their own literature used to have illustrations of Biblical-era women wearing nose rings. I'd always planned to use this argument with my 'rents back in the day when I wanted one. I was too chicken to get one then, but I'd get one now.

  Though I do have fond memories of a particularly assy JW couple gazing in horror at my tattoo, during one of the last times I attended a convention.....

  Kind of both, I guess.....it's really hard to say. Of course, the statement that they "did what they thought was best and out of love" is one that's beaten nearly to death every time I see them.

  The way we were raised was so weird that it defies explanation. My mother is a Dub's Dream; non-knowing, non-caring about anything that exists outside the JW box. A true puppet of the org., fanatically reciting the doctrines and will go into near-hysteria if someone questions them. BUT!!! still desperately trying to maintain the "elder's family" image, at the cost of her own children. I foresee a nervous breakdown in her future. My dad is different--smart, sensible, and inquisitive. I don't see how he CAN'T see that things are wrong with the org.

  I'm really unsure how to answer. I do seriously question why they did some of the things they did. I'm really in an angry stage at them right now. But sometimes I feel really, really sad for them.

  Is "fleshly" even a WORD?

  I'd like to know where they originated, too. Because I find them all very stupid.

  Most Embarrasing Witness Moment from Childhood

  anyone on here have a "most embarrasing witness moment" from childhood?

  mine is from 7th grade- that was 20 years ago- but i still cringe when i think of it.

  almost too hard to write down- but maybe it will be therapeutic & part of the healing process?

  Almost forgot my "most embarrassing" moment(s).....

  This is almost too embarassing to write. Like some of the posters here, I wasn't allowed to dress up-to-date or wear my hair in any nice styles, and I too had TV-screen-size, coke-bottle glasses. But, anyway...

  ...by the time I began seeing this boy from another cong., I finally had a job and was beginning to afford improving my looks. The only, and I mean ONLY reason I was allowed to go anywhere with this guy was because he was a ministerial servant. Anyway, it was his senior year and we went to his prom. Again, the ONLY reason I was able to go was because his older brother promised to "chaperone" us. (Um, how the hell was said "chaperone" supposed to accompany us inside the prom when everybody needed tickets to attend and could not attend alone?) Anyway, my "date's" friend had a hotel room reserved; we quickly ditched our "chaperone" and spent the evening in the room before going to the dance.

  So we're in the bed, and I am already knock-kneed with nervousness and guilt that some JW was seconds away from breaking down the door. I had this irrational fear that some Witness, somehow, knew my date's car and would investigate and find us out! (perhaps not so irrational, given the extreme nosiness of some JWs?) The unthinkable happened then: somebody knocked on the door. I got so scared that I flew out of the bed and LOCKED MYSELF IN THE BATHROOM. Turns out somebody had the wrong room, but my date spent a good hour trying to convince me to come out.

  My sister and I, as JWs, never could have nice normal outings with guys.....there was always some crazy s--t happening. I HATED being a JW teen.
