How do you explain Christmas to a JW?

i've come upon a rather perplexing problem .

my wife, who became a jw after we married, recently decided to help me to understand how i am actually worshipping christmas and thus all sorts of terrible false gods.. this caught me so off guard i was unable to mount a good defense.

we just ended up fighting.. her case is the following:.

That JW Propaganda has really sunk in. Do you honestly think normal people only spend one day a year seeing the people they love and exchanging gifts? People often do that all year around. Yes. I know it sounds crazy. But really, it does happen, despite what you might think. Honestly. "Worldly" people don't just get together to worship pagan gods only on DEC 25th. You'll find us getting together year around for birthdays, work-parties, marriages, etc, exchanging gifts.

If anything Christmas acts as a much needed break from work that everyone gets. A chance to do these and other things.

No one said they could only stand their relatives only once a year. Once again, your brainwashing shows....

I loved your Encyclopedia reference! When I was a witness I used to always say that too. Of course, when you keep reading through the Encyclopedia be sure to read about the pagan origins of wedding rings, days of the week, months of the year...etc...

I love when people do all the work of showing their ignorance for me.

Do JWs still believe the WT version of the 144000?

the society have taught for many years that only 144,000 individuals will have embraced true worship from the time when jesus (and presumably john the baptist six months before him) began his ministry in about 30 c.e.

when the great crowd began to be drawn in.. however, even a casual reading of the book of acts shows the phenomenal growth of christianity during the time of the apostles.

in colossians ch1 paul even makes the comment that the good news had at that point been preached to all creation that was under heaven.. in 64 c.e, there were so many christians in rome already that nero felt he could easily blame them for the destructive fire which had swept through the city.

no i'm not buying i just wonder what's going through the minds of a lot of witnesses. I mean, i guess it's obvious for us but what are they thinking?

sept 11 brings out JW blood-lust

i met a bunch of witnesses from my old congregation on a ferry to seattle a month ago.

i tried avoiding them but they spotted me and their was no escape.

they all seemed to be very jovial and asked me if i was going to the meetings.

They all seemed to be very jovial and asked me if i was going to the meetings. Because to them Sept 11 was a sure sign the end is near. They we're happy. It was like the best news ever. They we're the only people in the country smiling. One of them gave me a thumbs up as i was leaveing and said: "I know where you'll be this sunday"....

yeah right....

I couldn't believe they could be practically celebrating after the deaths of 5000 people. How sick. The scary thing is, if i was still a JW, i'd probably feel the same way. It's situations like that that make me thankful to have gotten out.

so your pretty close to keeling over already.

but that only makes you 14 around time of annointment so that seems a little ridiculous.

This was one of the biggest things i can remember growing up hearing. If there is only a thousand or so than don't they think the end is near? After sept 11 they gotta be freaking.

Most of the people back then involved with the watchtower society we're probably a little older so lets see, i'm guessing the average age of an annointed individual is probably pushing...oh...maybe a 100?...That's old. Anyway, i used to use the memorial count in the yearbook as my "armageddon clock" to see how much time i had left to be worldly by checking the bodycount of dead annointed. What's the official position on this? Is Armageddon right around the corner or not?

And what the hell is all this "new light" mumbo jumbo?
