Had a weird love-bombing throwback today......
by dubstepped inmy wife is having her first birthday party in july, and we're looking for a place to hold it.
we found an episcopal church online that offered their fellowship hall for such occasions, and we went to check it out this morning.
when we arrived they were having something in the hall and were setting up for it.

Dubstepped I think I would adore your family in real life!
Yeah, don't worry...churches rent out their halls all the time and seriously Episcopalians are lovely people. I've met a lot and haven't met a nasty one yet :). They probably aren't desperate for you to join their church and wouldn't expect it. I've been to many events at Episcopal churches, they are especially open to renting out their facilities.
My church gives outsider memorials and large group meetings non church related as well. There is a nice bee keepers monthly meeting for example. We are really friendly to these people but with no expectations. Don't be freaked out!

Why is Mother's Day wrong?
by stuckinarut2 inso why is celebrating mother's day wrong according to witnesses?.
is it not an opportunity to show respect to the giver of life (mother) and therefore god, the originator of families?.
does it not give an opportunity for members of the family to give a hard working mother a day off?
-

It's not in the least wrong. Like reasons for not celebrating many other special days, the WT is jealous of anyone else getting attention. And they don't really want anyone to be a mother. Taking care of a baby takes away SO much possible serve-us time!!

Following Christ "from a distance."
by New day inluke 22:54.
"then they arrested him and led him off, and they brought him into the house of the high priest; but peter was following at a distance.
" i am still raging because this verse was used at a recent circuit overseer's visit.

“Even if this wasn’t the Truth, I need the structure.”
by Londo111 ini remember many years back a fellow ministerial servant saying this to me.
he felt that even if jehovah’s witnesses were not the only true religion, the regimented routine of meetings and field service and the strict rules and enforcement provided a beneficial structure for his life.
at the time i thought if this wasn’t “the truth”, i’d have no need for all that “structure”.

Great thread, Londo!
I remember standing in the kitchen with my husband when I told him (we had talked about it before) that I definitely wanted to leave the religion. He was in despair. He thought our little world would fall apart, he thought our kids wouldn't grow up right, and who KNEW what was going to happen. He was only partially a believer at that point in the doctrine but he was scared.
Well the only thing that changed regarding 'our little world' is that now my husband pursues hobbies instead of getting a suit on and struggling for hours with kids at meetings. He's in a bad mood about one tenth as often as he used to be. And the kids are awesome, pursuing their own interests and education with no interest in drinking or drugs etc. They are really passionate about social causes tho.

Letter # 1 to the Governing Body of Jehovah's witnesses
by WITNESS-FOR-WATCHTOWER-REFORM inhere is my first letter i posted to the governing body.
i also hope that brothers on the writing committee who may be lurking on this site (and have some clout) read my letter and bring in change to this very flawed policy around confession of sins.. enjoy.
the governing body of jehovah’s witnesses.

They won't listen to you, because they never listen. But I couldn't agree more with the points you made. -

"How JWs differ from other Christians:" now on Google News
by Sugar Shane inplease post some comments on this news-site!
it's not a bad piece of journalism, but there are definitely some gaps that need to be filled.
the pro-jw apologists have already started posting on it!

I just want to hear any of you who are undercover but active JW's say 'Jesus is Lord' in a comment or a talk and see what happens.
Holman Christian Standard Bible
If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. -

Are JWs now encouraged to volunteer?
by Athanasius inafter i retired i volunteered for several community service programs, including working with the local food bank.
every fourth thursday of each month i help out in distributing food to needy families at the local veterans building.
i've been helping out for five years now.

I never knew any JW's who volunteered to do anything except myself. Not to be self righteous or anything, that's just the way it was.
