Did you like hymns as a jw?
by jean-luc picard ini was just explaining to mrs picard........ never a jw, and not english, how we used to celebrate the harvest festival, when i was 7 and younger, before my parents converted to jw'ism.. i loved to sing "we plough the fields and scatter".
of course, singing such hymns is, to a jw, paramount to apostasy, with the death penalty like punishment the ensued.. how really stupid their harsh rules.. did you have any favourite hymns?.
i think we would all agree, that they beat the pants off the "kingdom melodies".

Canadian JW's exerting themselves vigorously. Really?
by clarity inthere were at least four jw's to one lone man on the street.
they look to be mostly elders.
if they are ... is this the example they really want to set.

I had a JW come to my doors once and asked “Do you really believe in the trinity? “ Like I was some kind of idiot.
I was of course I do. If you look at the bible and see
Plurality of god in the old testament
The Angel of the Lord from the old testament who is identified as god and being with god.
The claims of Christ himself
The way Paul uses the old testament quotes implying them to both Jesus and God at the same time.
He just turned his back and walked away. Didn’t even say good bye. ( Not that I want to get into a discussion about the trinity)
I know this guy was quite aggressive but I think it proves having a serious discussion or exchange of ideas about the bible or bible theology is quite impossible.

I am still trying to figure out wherein the bible it says the resurrection will be a selective process .
I have always found it quite disturbing the average JW thinks an SS guard gassing children in the death camps will get a second chance on paradise earth because he is dead……………..yet the average person who says thanks not interested to a JW at the door with face the ultimate punishment at the big A .

Reading the Bible in 6 months isn't "anything to brag about" - Anthony Morris
by mac n cheese inthe 2015 annual meeting, specifically, part 1, right about minute 27, has anthony morris emphasizing that "you're better off reading one chapter (of the bible) and really absorbing it" than just reading the whole thing "as a challenge".
while i agree with the the whole idea of meditating on anything you read, it was doing this very thing that brought up so many unanswered questions.
i also came to the constant realization that the jws did not have a clue about what the bible really said.

What his ulterior motive really is , he is saying it impossible for you to understand the bible. It takes years and years of study to find the hidden codes since our entire religion is based on turning a parable into a prophecy and twisting things into the apocalyptical books of the bible.
If you read the bible and really didn’t study like we do you might think the bible is the story of god coming to earth in the flesh and the transfer of the blessing from the jewish people to the body of Christ.
No No No. What the bible really is , is the story of the heavenly hopers and earthly hopers and the overlappers and the 1935ers and the faithful slavers and the evil slavers and 1919ers and on Tuesday its is the blah blah blah blah. Bamboozle Bamboozle.
Basically don’t read it, read our books and send us your money.
Lying cocksucker.

I can’t say I really have a favorite hymm but I have always thought it was kind of odd that each Cong seems to have its own band. Usually just over the hillers who like to play CCR and Beatles covers at JW socials. Only in JW world could secular music be better than worship music. You would literally get in more trouble having a Jars of Clay or P.O.D cd than a Slayer disc.
As for Kingdom melodies, Fuck they suck. They should be used at Gitmo bay to get info from terrorists.

Did Jesus really die on a cross?
by macys inbeing raised a catholic we had lots of crosses around the house.
when my family converted to this cult they were all removed and destroyed in case they had demons in them lol but at this juncture in my life i do not even know if jesus as the way he is portrayed in the bible was real.
yes a man named jesus did live and die 2000 years ago and probably on a cross but he was definitely not the son of god.

I have heard this debate before and the biggest factor against the torture stake argument is Jesus and the criminals would have died of suffocation in about 20 minutes on the torture stake. The whole idea of extending the arms on the cross was to prolong the suffering.
Mind you, JWs to me are more about disproving the bible than actually teaching it.

Treat Disfellowshipped as "Men of the Nations and Tax Collectors"
by BluesBrother inwe are more than familiar with the wts rules that say the d/f'd ones , even close relatives outside the home are to be shunned completely "not even saying a greeting" except in very exceptional circumstances.
there is ,however, a line of thought that reasons on jesus' words at matthew 18 ,regarding personal disputes, and their application of it to being disfellowshipped.. matthew 18:15-17.
15 moreover, if your brother commits a sin, go lay bare his fault between you and him alone.

I have an Uncle is a pastor at a Baptist church in a large Urban center and he does some outreach work. There are some rules to working with people with drug problems, Homeless people and sex trade workers etc etc.
For example
Don’t go in their homes
Don’t invite them in your home
Don’t turn a blind eye to criminal activity in the shelter.
Etc etc
I often though of Jesus story about treating people like Gentiles and tax collectors yet hanging out with them something like that. You can help, even associate with people and not be buddy buddy with them as long as they know where you stand.
JW policy is pure blackmail.

I remember studying with an Elder and the topic “the Israel of god “ came up. He explained to me these are the magical Christians that would rule with Christ in the heavens and the only ones today who can understand the bible (before the GB anointed themselves alone).
So I explained the book of Galatians to the elder. Basically Paul is writing the letter as a warning to the church in Galatia (sp) on the tip of Spain to beware of the so called Jewish Christians that were spreading the false teachings about the obedience to Mosaic Law being essential to your salvation. You are saved though Christ alone and blah blah blah. All basic Christian teachings.
So the book ends with something like blessing to them and the Israel of God. I don’t know the exact phrase.
Judging from the theme of the book wouldn’t you think the Israel of god might have meant, Jewish Christians who followed basic Christian teachings? (Christ alone, saved by faith).
So what you actually want me to believe was Paul was talking about Gentile Christians and heavenly hopers who were not supposed to be born pass 1935 and now are recognized as only seven men in 2012 ?
That is what Paul was talking about. He was dumbfounded.
I soon realized he didn’t know anything other Watchtower propaganda . He had no idea of common themes and how books of the bible relate to each.
He also never talked to me again.
Not that I have a masters degree in divinity but I think the average JW is dangerously uneducated when it comes to teaching the bible.

Double Standards in the JW world
by nevaagain inno other organization has so many written and unwritten rules like the jws.
so it comes to no suprise that there are a lot of double standards.. even though the end is "near", wt is building new and bigger offices.
while the small jw should live in a closet and should make plans to have a bigger house in the new world.

We have a doctor in our cong. He is straight from Africa and is most likely a born in.
He doesn’t do any field service (too be fair he works some crazy hours).
He does no public speaking
He hits about 50% meeting attendance (again long hours at work.)
His kids are enrolled in pee wee hockey.
Heck, my wife just had a surgery and he didn’t even send her with any official WTS directive. Just a note saying the patient may have strong views on blood.
The guy is treated like a total rock star. It is embarrassing how the elders kiss his ass. Now if that was joe rank and file……………………………you would be marked as bad association.

Earliest Life on Earth Pushed Back Another 300 Million Years
by cofty inresearchers have found evidence of ancient microorganisms that lived in what is now western australia at least 4.1 billion years ago.
if confirmed, the discovery suggests that life originated on earth 300 million years earlier than previously thought.
.... the ancient microorganisms in question were found trapped inside zircons formed from magma in western australia.

God
I hate when people fake an interest in all things science just to argue with theists. A thread like this is nothing more than bait to suck someone into a circular go nowhere argument where you can mock and ridicule someone’s beliefs.
