  1975 - A weak argument?

  i posted this on an older thread, but i wanted to get an honest opinion about this from all of you.

  i think taking the 1975 approach with a jw is...weak.

  was it wrong (and false prophetic) of them?

  I was 16 years old in 1975. They sure as hell promoted that date as "the end." My mother used to say we had made it "just under the wire" because my folks were baptized in 1972. My frantic father, realizing my brother and I were "of the age of reason" pushed us to get baptized, which we did in January of 1974.

  To say it was implied, alluded to, but never actually said is incorrect. It was trumpeted from the rooftops while at the same time they kept saying, "but nobody knows the day or the hour." I even told my father, "Well, if every Witness picked a day and hour between now (1973) and October of 1975, somebody would get it right." Every JW believed it absolutely. Absolutely.

  WTS is peopled with fiends.

  JWs Could Learn A Lot from the First Baptist Church

  the other day i found a red plastic bag hanging on the knob of our exterior door.

  it contained a calendar with beautiful landscape scenes and scriptures for every month of the year.

  i'm not a bible believer, but i hung up the calendar because of the pretty pictures.

  They used to put out fairly decent calendars back in the 80s. I remember one from probably '87 that featured 12 different pictures, one of which was a couple out in field service near Beirut, Lebanon. You could see planes dropping bombs on another part of the city. There was another picture of people leaving a KH in some Central American country where there were armed soldiers milling around outside.

  These pictures were designed to make all of us slobs living in peaceful places feel extreme guilt at our lame excuses for not going out in service.

  Does Your Past As A JW Affect Your Enjoyment Of The Holidays?

  my daughter who's in her 30's, just loves the holidays and birthdays!

  i even love giving xmas presents and birthday gifts.

  and i think i like it more than some "worldly" people.

  So much of what makes these holiday special is tradition. If you spent your childhood as a JW you have no tradition surrounding the holidays.

  I did a half and half - Dad dragged us into the cult when I was 12, so I have some memories of Christmases past. In the past 8 years since I left I haven't had anybody to celebrate with, so big fat hairy deal. However, I've recently made contact with my extended family, so I can start building those holiday memories.

  i haven't seen most of them for 30 or 40 years.

  recently, thanks to facebook, i've found my family, and this year i'm traveling to maine for my first family thanksgiving in 40 years!.

  In 1972 when my father dragged my family into the JWs he pretty much cut off our extended family. I haven't seen most of them for 30 or 40 years. Recently, thanks to Facebook, I've found my family, and this year I'm traveling to Maine for my first family Thanksgiving in 40 years!

  The last time I saw my cousins we were teenagers. Now some of them are grandparents. I don't know their spouses, children, or grandchildren. And they don't know me. A lot of water under the bridge to talk about.

  Since my immediate family is busy shunning me, this event will give me the family connections that I'm missing.

  Is there a CO visit coming up? They're looking out for their "irregular" publisher numbers. Don't want to have to answer to the CO for that.

  WT elders school: The elders in our circuit appear to be "trained" quite well

  in part of the video mentioned above showing the "goofus" elder trying to handle the situation with the crying sister:.

  the "goofus" elder went into the kingdom hall library alone with the sister when she left the auditorium.. you could hear literal, audible, gasps from the 100 or so elders watching the video.. a few moments later, as the sister was crying, "goofus" put out his hand and touched the sister's hand.. again, literal, loud, audible gasps from the audience.. they darkened the room while the video was playing so i couldn't see him, but i have to imagine the co was quite pleased that the audience grasped the "mistakes" that elder goofus was making.. .

  When I was new as a JW I remember mercy being stressed with rehabilitation being the goal. Not no more, apparently.

  WT Elders school: Avoid black and white thinking - now look at this zebra

  continuing on with my haphazard review of the recent one-day elders school..... in one of the introductory talks, the co was making the point that we can't view things merely from a black and white perspective.

  many issues have "shades of gray" and we need to use discernment in such situations.. and i'm thinking "finally!

  maybe he will continue on to make an actual, reasonable point!".

  Okay, so they're consolidating their power by proclaiming themselves to be the FDS. Now they're increasing the fear level among the elders which will filter down to the R&F.

  In my experience, if a sister ran crying to the back, another sister would jump out of her chair and follow her to the library to comfort her while the elders' would continue singing the song. And they'd never follow up, not wanting to touch emotional pain with a 10-foot pole.

  more haphazard thougths on the recently concluded elder school..... a big chunk of time was spent on a video which traced a judicial case, all the way from the confession to the elders through the decision to disfellowship the guy.. here is a very brief synopsis of the video:.

  tearful late-teen or early-20's publisher confesses to 2 elders that he committed fornication with a "worldly girl" who is now preganant and wants to marry him.

  the elders give him some "homework" to do prior to his judcial committee - read psalm 51 and an old wt article.

  I remember a CA demo where a daughter is asking her father if she can go to a high school dance. Instead of counseling her as her father, he grabs the Watchtower Index and says, "Let's see what we can find in here." They look up a series of articles, and she concludes that she shouldn't go to the dance.

  This demo was cited as an example of how parents should be bringing up their children. Yikes! Usurping parental authority and teaching the kids never to think for themselves but look to the Society's publications.
