How do you find exJW groups in your area?
by Eyebrow ini was wondering if anyone could tell me how to find out if there are any groups in my area.
where would i begin to look?.
i am a little bit nervous, because i don't want to get involved with people who are looking only to berate the witnesses...but people who are getting on with there lives after leaving.

This is kind of off the topic, but on the same one. If anyone knows where to find counselors/therapy/exit counseling. Is there a network of some kind?

Holidays: Do you celebrate?
by Vitameatavegamin ini smell something burning; oh, just me thinking again!!.
anyway, one thing i always missed were the holidays-christmas especially.
i know that this is an unproven celebration to say the least, but i have always loved the warmth and beauty of this holiday, although very commercialized in this day and age.

I guess I am the odd one out. I don't mind holidays or birthdays, but they don't really mean anything to me. I have a take it or leave it attitude. It gets me in trouble because I always forget my friends birthdays. Maybe this will change if I have a family?
I do have a favorite holiday; Valentines Day! I like that day. The only reason I can figure is because when I was in school that was the only day my mother did not take me out. So I would watch as the kids gave each other cards/gifts/candy. And Halloween like bboyneko. Halloween is fun.

the internet, does it really matter??
by astra inhi, i have been following some of the discussions about the internet and jw.
some people think that it seems to make a big difference, that it will seriously reduce wts ranks because people get access to all sorts of information and because they can get in contact with people who maybe have the same doubts and thoughts as themselves.. but how big a difference do you think that the net is making?
how many people do you think have withdrawns from jw because of infomation or contact achieved over the net?.

My own personal experience. I had left the organization because of the JW men that I dated. I had no doubt that it was the truth, and I figured that when I found a mate I would eventually return.
And then I did a search on the Internet. It was not the expose that affected me, it was the personal experiences that I read of people hurt so badly by the WTBTS. And then the false reasonings, teachings, and quotes really got to me. Without the Internet, and the resarch of others who knows what I might have done later on in my life.

Comparison of Mormonism and JWism
by alex ini'm thinking that the mind-control games are very very very very much the same between mormonism and jwism.
i've lurked here for a while and thought i'd introduce myself.
my name is alex and i'm an unbelieving mormon who lives in utah.

It is funny but I have never thought about the similarities between the two organizations. I was raised in Utah. I lived in Ogden, and was a regular pioneer all over northern Utah. Because I was one of the few non-Mormon kids at school it had a strange affect of strengthening a faith.
When my family first moved to Utah to serve where the need was great (there were few witnesses in the area) my mother began to read anti-Mormon apostate literature. She researched the church she used to say "I don't know how someone could believe this", and then she just stopped. I remember someone asking her why she stopped and she never really gave a decent answer. Now looking at this post I wonder if she saw the similarities and it shook her faith????
This is interesting to me now I think I will do more research.
Thanks for the post Alex.

What really bothers me about this situation is the lack of healthcare. My mother who is in her late 50's is literally dedicating her life, and living the "missionary" style life. If she gets sick guess who foots the bill? Me. If anything happens to her while she is down there again who will get sent the bill? Me. It makes me angry over the situation. Because there are these stupid "reasoning’s" why a single woman cannot go to Gilead and at least get some compensation, but that same woman can pay her own way to a foreign country like you pointed out and get no assistance from the WTBTS. It is a financial scam you're right.

My mother was at that one day thing. She is a "needgreater" in the Dominican Republic. I can only tell you about my mother and her roommates.
First off my mother is NOT being paid. She is different than her roommates. She has a house (her only worldly possession) she rents out. From the difference in the rent vs. mortgage she is able to live comfortably in the Dominican Republic. Her roommates on the other hand work for a few months in the states or whatever country you listed and then return there to live.
From what she has told me the majority are women. Because women are not allowed to go to Gilead if they are single or if they are over 35 they take it upon themselves to preach to the less fortunate. My mother preaches to the deaf in the Dominican Republic. They use pictures to teach them.
So the majority of these people are ones who were not accepted into Gilead for one reason or another and have a desire to preach to people in other countries. For my mother it is her mosquito coast, she is escaping the realities of the western world.
When she came to visit me the first time in 4 years and I paid for the plane ticket, she said to me "if we would have become "needgreaters" when you were young you would still be a witness today". I swiftly corrected her and said sooner or later I would have come to my senses whether in the US, Peru or Mars.

Richard Scarry's Best Field Service Story--EVER
by LDH inok so pardon me for the take off on richard scarry--he really is one of my favorite all time children's authors.. but i had to share this field service story with you--it's the gospel truth!
hopefully, you can add some of yours.. while pioneering in upstate ny, my sister and i had frequent occasions to work in service with a married pioneer couple.
yes, they were window washers, but that's not the real story here.. they had a return visit on an elderly gentleman who was kind enough to take the magazines every once in a while.

That is just sick.
I used to regular pioneer in a Spanish-speaking group in Northern Utah. I had bible studies mainly with migrant workers out in the fields. One time I had a bible study with the wife of a Shepard close to the Idaho border. It was about an hours drive to get to where she lived. One day I had to go visit her alone, no one wanted to travel with me. I was on a dirt road, and a small white truck like a Budget or a Uhaul truck was in front of me at a stop sign. When the truck pulled out blood came spewing from it. It ran down the sides, and out of the bottom of the pull down door. It splattered onto my theocratic 4 door white sedan. I was in shock. The truck was making a turn and as it turned on the side was written mobile slaughter. YUCK!
