If I were a JW and were watching the news footage on CNN about the world's relief effort to help the victoms I would probably wonder a few things. First and foremost (of course) were any brothers hurt or killed. Two, what is the Society doingto help (they'll probably put some kind of spin on it). And three, why in the world is Satan's pawns helping these people?

Last night, Kev and I were discussing the Billions of dollars spent in "freeing" Iraq, and how, if that had instead been available to spend on S Asia instead, how different the world opinion of the US would be. Then, again, the US has always been criticized and held "hostage" by countries that want us to come in and "save" them, because we're "wealthy". Look at the BS N Korea has tried with nuclear weapons.
Yeah, I have the same feelings. I guess I'm not so much thinking "let's spend less money chasing after the bad guys" as I am "let's remember that there are a lot of people in need."
I know I for one only give to these funds to help the needy when something like this happens. I need to keep myself more current with other "disaster area" in the world and help with whatever I can. Just so dam frustrating. Seems like one problem gets solved and another follows. I'm thinkink "when was the last time you even saw a story about malaria in African" on the 10 o'clock news?

Not that I want to make lite of that event but I was shocked when I read this article. I never realized that a million Africans A YEAR die from....no, not AIDS...no not war..but rather MALARIA. Can you believe that? A diese that can be prevented and or cured still kills a million people a year????
Just makes me wonder what the U.S. could do with the amount of money it spends in one month fighting in Iraq.
while i don't agree with the wt's views on shunning, blood transfusions, or how they conduct themselves, i can honestly say i wouldn't celebrate holidays even if i felt like it.

As a "reformed" JW I don't think you've ever really celibrated Christmas. To me, it's what you make it. Growing up a JW I missed out on all of the Christmas parties my relatives had. It pisses me off all the memories I was robbed of. For the last few years I've been able to join them and have created some awesome memories. The same holds true with celibrating Christmas with my kids. Putting up decorations, buying some gifts for others, being a little more aware of how lucky we are and trying to share some of that lucky with a few other families. Sure, my kids loved the MP3 and portable DVD players but I find Christmas to be a great time to reflect on my life, where I've been and where I'm going.

Now I think, "Would He be loving? Aren't there things in this life that we would just never be able to comprehend? Perhaps He withholds answers because of that. Perhaps if we did know all the answers, we'd be so bigheaded we would kill ourselves in our arrogance."
I'm not asking for answers to all of life's questions, but answering one basic question would be great. Why not simply answer the question "is there a God or not?" I just can't imagine any senerio in which mankind is better off not hearing from a loving God, if He indeed does exist.
this question seems to be getting thrown around in the earthquake threads, and is asked a lot... so, what is your opinion on why god allows bad things to happen?

Can a creationist explain to me how they reconcile a belief in a perfect God with his creation of a flawed planet? The standard answer for disease and death is Adam and Eve's sin and free will - fair enough, I suppose in the context of the Bible, but the earth was formed before Adam and Eve even existed... why do earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and extreme weather events occur? Tectonic plates, magma and air pressure/temperature don't have free will and can't sin.
This is one of the best question I've ever read on this board....and...I got a chance to use it today with my JW mom. WOW! She comes to the family business once a week and I knew she was going to ask if I heard about the earthquake. I said "yes" and nothing else. She had this surprised look on her face. I knew exactly what she was thinking "C'mon, you're only going to say 'yes'? LOL! Then she asked "Ok, tell me what you're REALLY thinking?" So I asked your question. She stood there..completely silent....and said....."I....don't.....know." WOW! First time that's EVER happened!
