I don't know about boring, but Lamentations is certainly the biggest downer.

Complete reversal: from Witness to atheist
by Ephanyminitas ini'm pretty new here (five minutes old!
) and i'm curious: how many have left the organization and, in time, become athiests.
i was raised in the organization, so growing up, my thinking was -- of course -- stifled.

Freepeace and Quotes: Wow, small world. I also knew Jack Danley. He served in Western Canada in the mid-70s, and stayed at my parents house more than once. He had a voice that could surely call back persons from the dead. No one would sit in the front rows.
I can recall one incident when his wife planned a special event for their host family (not us). She gave a list of ingredients to the sister, and then cooked a meal of chinese food for them. That was actually rather nice. After the meal, she itemized the cost of the food, telling them how much this would have cost in a restaurant. I think she was fishing for a contribution. She never got one.

Thanks for the suggestions, Funky. I am a big fan of John Irving. I don't know how I missed Owen Meaney. And "The Demon Haunted World" is fantastic. It should be mandatory reading for everyone.
Valis: I loved Towing Jehovah. The sequels, Blameless in Abadon and The Eternal Footman were also great.

why I like this web site
by blindfool ini thought about posting this topic earlier today and decided not to.. but after reading little-lamb-on-a-hill i thought, what the heck?.
yesterday, my eight year old son had some minor surgery, nothing serious, very minor, but you know how the doctors tell you how even minor surgery can take a serious turn.
well, i started to imagine all the things that could go wrong and of course thought of the blood issue.

Blind:
Last year, my son had emergency surgery. In the middle of the night, my wife was with the doctor, and I was with the nurses and my son, while they prepped him for surgery. The nurse took me aside and asked me to sign the release, noting any restrictions. When it came to religion, I told her that I was a Jehovah’s Witness. She said, “Oh, that means you don’t want any blood transfusions.” I told her, “That’s right, but if it becomes absolutely necessary, ask us again.” She understood completely. Thank God it didn’t come to that.
The hospital staff seem to have a pretty fair understanding of Witness's views on blood. They also understand that many Witnesses just want to live, and will assist them to find a loophole.
I'm glad to hear that the issue didn't really arise for you. Welcome to the site. You will find people who are just like you, here.

I cannot begin to express the disgust and nausea that I feel whenever I hear about the futher developments of this case.
The actions of this organization have come as a direct result of a group that has created a fantasy world, then the originator of the fantasy has passed on, leaving the organization to zealots who actually believe their own stupid doctrines.
The only good thing that can come out of this farce is that the JW's, who have always looked bad over blood, are making themselves look even worse.

LB: When I get old, I certainly hope no one will pull any punches with me. I would be offended if anyone treated me any differently intellectually, just because of my age.
I think it's disrespectful to patronize older people. The most respect you can give someone is to treat them as a worthy opponent.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it, SoulJah.
After all, if he's not at your house, he will just be tramping down the street ringing someone else's bell. At least you can offer him a warm house and a chance to sit down. Besides, he might bring along a younger person who can be reached.

I, too, lost many a post, until I discovered a simple little trick.
Whenever I finish writing a post, before clicking the "Reply to Topic" button, I highlight my text and click "copy". A copy of the text stays in the buffer. If my post is gobbled up, I simply put my cursor in the irritatingly blank page, and click "paste" - and it's back.
