since the wt this week has the prediction of a "peace and security" event, i thought i would include a comment from the new american commentary (nac, d. michael martin, pp.159-60) on 1 thessalonians 5:2, 3.. here is the wt's position, according to this week's wt study (sep 2012 study edition, pp.3 4):.

1 th 5:2, 3 is a "future development.".

it happens "just before that day of jehovah.".

There is also a mistranslation, or at least a very poor translation, in verse 4 in the NWT.

(1Th 5:4) "But YOU, brothers, YOU are not in darkness, so that that day should overtake YOU as it would thieves."

This suggests that for some bizarre reason, "that day" would over take thieves!

What was meant, and can be discerned from the context (especially verse 2 quoted in the OP) is
"But you, brothers, are not in darkness, that the Day should overtake you as a thief."

It properly refers back to the illustration of a thief that can suprise you when you are not expecting it.

Maybe this is one example of where the new Bible version will have a correction.

jw leaks has published court documents relating to the removal of the body of elders in the menlo park congregation of jehovahs witnesses (california, usa), the seizing of control of millions of dollars of congregation assets by watchtower bible and tract society of new york, and the related rico enterprise civil lawsuit against jpmorgan chase bank et al.. backstory: in 2010 the watchtower bible and tract society of new york seized control of millions of dollars of prime real estate assets belonging to the menlo park congregation of jehovahs witnesses, california, by forcefully removing the body of elders and dispersing the congregation.

money invested by the congregation was also removed from their bank accounts by watchtower representatives.

those within the congregation that objected to this were threatened with disfellowshipping.

Could rebaptism present a loophole for exiting without being shunned?

this is how i imagine it can work: the baptized jw first gets the elders to acknowledge in written form that his previous baptism was in fact null and void.

* then later, coming close to baptism - preferably, the day of rebaptism - he changes his mind about being rebaptized (maybe he says no or remains silent when the questions are being asked, with this being video recorded).

so legally, he never was a legitimately baptized jw and therefore should not be anounced as "bro.

At one time, only the anointed were known as 'Jehovah's Witnesses'.
The rest had a lesser title like Jonadabs.

It was only later that the JW name was applied to more than just the anointed - I've yet to find out when that happened and the WT article that describes it.

What happened in 97-98 to reduce the increase?

looking at the yearly stats, it's apparent that something happened in 1997/98 which caused the increase %ge to drop off a cliff and remain low.. take a look:.

Thanks for all of your thoughts on this.

It seems then, there is a 3-4 year delay when a new and ridiculous idea is forced on the sheep, until they make their plans and leave.

These figures suggest that maybe there are just as many coming in (since the number baptised each year is only down a small amount since 1995) but the number leaving increased, and that increased level has been maintained ever since.

We may therefore see another dip in 2016 when the fallout from this latest dodgy new light translates into more leavers.

Is John Barr's funeral talk at odds with New Light?

john barr served in the gb and died in dec 2010 at the age of 97.. in his funeral talk and the accompanying eulogy tract that was printed, is the final sentence:.

"without a doubt, he slept for but a moment in death and has now received his heavenly reward and his father's approval - all he ever wanted!".

given that the new light about being approved and appointed over all things is now a future event linked to the gt trib, was it correct to teach these things about brother barr at his funeral service?.

If you're asking How do you know the reward includes both the FDS and other anointed?, the July WT on p.25 para 19 says:

"Similarly, as stated at Matthew 24:47, he promised that a small group of men—the anointed brothers who make up the faithful slave—will be appointed over all his belongings. In reality, all of the 144,000 will share his vast heavenly authority."

If you're asking How do you know it's future?, that same WT says on p.24 para 18:

"When Jesus comes for judgment during the great tribulation, he will find that the faithful slave has been loyally dispensing timely spiritual food to the domestics. Jesus will then delight in making the second appointment — over all his belongings."

If there was a first resurrection in 1919, this presupposes they have already been judged as righteous, which fits with the appointment over all Christs belongings happening in 1919 as well - old light. But the WT now says this judging of the FDS and their subsequent reward is future.

Even though they have not spelled it out (yet), my conclusion is that there was never a first resurrection apart from that of Jesus himself.

SBF it's true the FDS and anointed are different, but the reward in Mt24:47 "...he will appoint him over all His belongings" applies equally to them both.

According to new light, this reward is still future.
