Whats been your greatest personal Struggle?
by ScoobySnax inwhats been yours?
be honest.. i know mines always been trying to reconcile being gay and being jw.
as i was growing up it was like being in the middle of 2 polar opposites both tugging at me day in day out, sometimes trying to understand one whilst ignoring the other and vice versa.

I struggle with the fact that it took my daughter's suicide to realize how duped I was by the cult. I can't tell you how much I admire those who post that they had intellectual differences with the society and did research and realized things didn't add up. I personaly was totally indoctrinated, hoped to life forever petting lions, tigers and bears, and was commited to giving my all to the pioneer work. How could I be so gullible, so trusting. I am not that academically challenged, since leaving the cult and attending college I've maintained a 4.0 average...what made me so stupid????

this has probably been mentioned before, but...
by LuckyNun inif you're like me, you used to dread certain days of the week.
mainly, tuesdays and thursdays for me.
waste the entire day at school, then come home, take a shower, scarf down supper and be ready to go by 6:30pm.

We made a positive out of a negative. Since we were used to having to do something on Tues/Thurs, we "religiously" work out at our local gym those nights. It's worked out great, we rarely miss our workouts, also we usually workout on Sunday mornings too...beneficial for little my arse!

Have you really left?
by Ariell ini'm sure we all view the watchtower society as a mind controlling dictatorship that has systematically destroyed our lives is some shape or form.
i'm sure this is why we've all left, but have we really?
someone can physically leave a religion, but emotionally they're still there.

Someone can physically leave a religion, but emotionally they're still there. They still believe
This is true of my husbands two siblings that have been disfellowshipped over ten years. What was strange was that after our daughter died and we finally "saw the light" they were not supportive of us calling the JWs a cult. As a matter of fact, they called the congregation that was having a memorial talk for my father-in-law and told them not to be fooled by our presence there because we considered them a cult.
They have been physically out, but in their hearts are waiting to die at Armagedon, and feel they are just not good enough to be good witnesses...very sad.

My uncle passed away..
by Valis init was only a matter of time before my uncle nathan passed away.
i wished i had gone and seen him before he died, but i didn't because we had a dustup about a month ago.
he was a sad tale..he had the talent beaten out of him by his abusive alchoholic elder for a father...he played classical cello for a while...except all that talent was robbed from him...so he ran...ran away and joined the navy...left the navy and led a hard life...jail, homelessness, near death motorcycle accidents, etc...he ended up in the va hospital about a year ago...he had fallen into a deep depression after succumbing to the inherited condition anti trypsin(sp?

So sorry Valis, your point about the religion taking a person's passion away was something Makena and I were talking about first thing this morning. He used to play piano at the circuit assemblies, and he told me that every time literally dozens of the JWs would say "oh, my dream is to play music, first thing I'll devote my time to in the new system"...

by Gretchen956 ini would like to send the deepest thanks to doodle-v and savage buddha for their hospitality last night.

The man can cook! Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality Doodle V and Savage B, we all had such a great time. I was so glad our teenage son came along, he told us on the way home what cool people you two are.
I'm terrible at remembering names/avatars, but I had great conversations with many there. What a diverse group, we all have had different painful experiences, yet the common bond was the mutual support and compassion we all have for each other...it's a beautiful thing!

Makena met him in person in the 80s, one of our elders was producing his album. One thing I found interesting was that he referred to his wife as Mrs. Benson, she was in the room at the time. He came across like he was quite full of himself, and the elder even said he believed his own PR.
I saw him on a flight to Maui last year, one thing I can say is that it appeared like he drank quite a bit on the flight over....not uncommon for JWs.

JW Jam Session at my house!
by Sabine ina couple of weeks ago two jw teens came over to visit our son, they had all been good friends when we were in the cult.
anyway, since we have not attended since 2000, and the elders and local jws seriously avoid us, i was quite surprized these two came over to say hi.
a couple of nights later, they show up with electric guitars (our son plays drums) and they jam downstairs for a few hours.

Even Makena (my husband) joined in when he heard them doing "foxy lady" by hendrix. Yesterday they called again and want to come over and jam again.
What's weird is that over Christmas I started seriously contemplating disassociating myself, feeling it would bring closure. A couple of months have gone by and I've been busy with other things, then these kids show up.
It's started me wondering if maybe it isn't a good idea for me to disassociate right now. My son says the kids don't mention the religion at all, and told him they are moving out as soon as they graduate. He is convinced their hearts aren't in the religion and are just waiting it out...maybe I can be more of a help to others if I'm not officially off limits....

(from Makena - posting unders wife's logon)
I grew up in Northern Indiana. Shoveled off the driveway to shoot baskets in wintertime, tobaggoning, ice hockey, fishing, picnics by Lake Michigan. Lots of fond memories.
I believe that David Letterman, and Larry Bird also are hoosiers?

Yes or No----Do You Believe That JWs Are A Cult?
by minimus ini believe they are "cultlike" but i don't think they are a "cult"........and you?

I just read Singer's book "Cults in our Midst" last week, but all I have to do is re-read my daughter's suicide note to confidently say YES they are a cult. Any group that can make you feel so separated from god that you would take your own life is in my opinion a cult.
