My Dreams Have Been Indefinitely Postponed
by StinkyPantz ini woke up to a banging on my door and much to my surprise, it was a police officer.
he proceeded to tell me that my car was damaged.
i was thinking, "great, someone must've busted out a window or slashed my tires.

I'm so sorry you are going through this, couldn't happen at a worst time, right? I understand what your situation could be. If they give you less than what you owe on the car, you will have to continue making payments and have no car.
I've gone through this not once, but twice with an ex-husband who wrecked two cars in two years and we didn't get enough to pay off the loans. It's known as "paying on a dead horse."
Can you look into a lawsuit against the one who hit your car for the difference? Maybe small claims court as you wouldn't need a lawyer. Also do they have those "special car dealers" for those with financial problems where you live? The interest is terrible but could get you some wheels until the situation got better.
Hope something good comes out of this.

Patient Privacy Laws have gone in effect in USA
by Sadie5 inmonday the patient privacy laws went into effect.
no information can be given out to anyone unless permission is granted from the patient.
our oldest son works at a hospital and it is immediate termination if it is found that anything is said about anyone who is receiving treatment at the hospital.. this should stop some elders who call local hospitals to see if any jws are there and then showing up at their room, uninvited.

Hi Scully,
The news carried some of the new procedures that have to be followed. When you are in a waiting room of a doctor's office, you will not be called by your name to come in. ( Will they give us numbers?) Medical charts have to be turned over or facing away from anyone that could see them. No names listed on boards.
No information will be given over the phone about anyone. Like hearing your grandma was taken to the hospital, you call to find out but they will not tell you she was there or condition.
There is a $20,000 fine if the laws are broken.
I usually take my mother to the doctor and discuss her care with him. Will have to make sure I can call him to discuss anything is the future.

No it didn't seem to apply to the govt. Just health care worker, or people who work in those places.

This should stop some elders who call local hospitals to see if any JWs are there and then showing up at their room, uninvited. It should also guarantee privacy to those who take blood transfusions or have medical procedures that they don't want everyone knowing about.
Any thoughts?

US Patriotism VS the Rest of the World
by Xena inabaddon and i were having a discussion in another thread regarding the differences between us patriotism and european patriotism.
apparently some people consider the us to be peopled with rabid flag waving, my country right or wrong, ugly americans.
i am wondering what the general concensus of this board would be?.

don't want to come across as insulting or sarcastic, but how do people(in other countries) show their patriotism.
If you don't like the flag waving, flag saluting, hand over the heart, bowed head, national anthem singing stuff we do, what do you do?

Prisca,
Just a few thoughts: As far as the claim of "living in the best country in the world", to me this is more of an expression of contentment. I could say I live in the best home in the world. I know there are other homes out there that surpass my home in everyway, yet I am happy and content with my home so for me my home is the best in the world. I could dwell on all the negative things in my home, the carpet needs to be replaced and I would love to paint or wall paper the walls, and so and so has a bigger, newer home, to the point where I'm not happy with my home. But if I don't have the finances or means to accomplish that, there is no sense in dwelling on that now. Will fix it, when I can.
We take pride in our neighborhoods, our towns and cities, our states. There is always competion between local high school football teams. Our team will beat your team. We always compare our state's performance in everything from crime, punishments, wages sports, academic, roads and etc. with neighboring states. And whatever state you are from, you take pride in your state. Even though some other state has something better than yours. If you are truly miserable about it, you move to a place where you can be happy.
I was most impressed with a show of patriotism from some of our local WWII veterans. Many of them were Native American. Their parents and grandparents had settled our town. While growing up, they were not allowed to attend our local schools.(Sometimes I am so embarrassed to be a white person) They were shipped off the special "Indian Schools" that were miles away. Yet during WWII they enlisted in the service. Many of the tribes had treaties with the US Govt which would not allow them to be part of the military, so they had to go to court to gain the freedom to enlist. One of our Native American Vets is in his 80's now, and has been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Even though the US Govt treated them terrible, they saw it as better than what the other gov. were. They also saw it as fighting for their homeland, their country.
Our town has grown over the years, we still have a large population of Native Americans. We are a very patriotic town. We fly our flags a lot. they do the flag salute for every public gathering. There is a sense of deep pride for our community.
In closing, I don't think American are saying our country is better than yours. They are just expressing their pride and contentment with their country(not really our gov either). If you express that YOU live in the greatest country in the world, I wouldn't argue with you at all.
