  The real victims of "peace"

  the victims are the children, of course.. in 1999 unicef (the united nations children's fund) conducted a survey in iraq to determine the effect of sanctions on iraq, imposed by the united nations.. what had sanctions done?the surveys reveal that in the south and center of iraq -- home to 85 per cent of the country's population -- under-5 mortality more than doubled from 56 deaths per 1000 live births (1984-1989) to 131 deaths per 1000 live births (1994-1999).

  likewise infant mortality -- defined as the death of children in their first year -- increased from 47 per 1000 live births to 108 per 1000 live births within the same time frame.

  the surveys indicate a maternal mortality ratio in the south and center of 294 deaths per 100,000 live births over the ten-year period 1989 to 1999. .

  Expat,

  Thanks for the information and the links. I think the hardest thing for me with regards to this war is knowing what to believe and what is merely propaganda. It's incredibly difficult to wrap my mind around the thought of so many people, especially children!, suffering and dying...I can't help but think what if that was my son or daughter? I can't support a war that is primarily economic in nature but humanitarian reasons? That's quite different.

  DakotaRed Has Been Spoiled

  as many know, witchywoman came to visit me this past week and returned home today.

  all in all, it was the most wonderful 4 days we have both spent in a very long time.

  having her with me was very comfortable and felt so natural.. i cooked meals everyday, to impress her of some of my other talents, of course .

  I can't go to the theater and watch a movie without a big bag of popcorn, a large diet coke, and...and...(oh god, i'm so ashamed!) ... CANDY! Sometimes, I even force my kids to go with me so that people will think I'm buying the candy for them

  Oh yeah baby yeah!!!! Bring it on!!! I LOVE rollercoasters (strange coz I'm a wimp about most everything else) and that one sounds like it would be incredible.

  My dream vacation would be to travel the US and other countries to find and ride the best rollercoasters...I just need to win the lottery first

  Sorry that things turned out the way they did...I can understand (not condone tho!) his taking the money and even the toilet paper, but to take the dog? That's just plain cold. You know, your sense of humor, even and especially in the face of what you're going through says a lot about you. I know that things are really hard for you right now but please remember that you are a strong person and not without options, although sometimes they are so very hard to see. I'm really glad that I got to meet you this past weekend; you are a warm and caring person and it sucks the big one that you're having to go thru what you are. Please stay in touch and try not to stay away too long as you will be sorely missed.

  Ok, honestly, you people are too funny! I've LOL'd reading all the captions...so many good ones I wish that I had time to go thru and comment on them all but I can't right now I think they're all good and Xena...yours were NOT stupid, they were funny! Don't sell yourself short. But did you REALLY have to develop a lot of self control at this particular time??! Geez woman...I wanna read what you were thinking about the one pic you wouldn't comment on . Oh and the caption under the fourth picture really cracked me up.

  Joy, I HAD been cooperating but remember how the cameras kept messing up??! I mean sheesh, how many times did we try to take that darn picture anyway? LOLOL

  Angharad, to answer your question, he was gearing up to climb a scaffolding thingie that was set up on the beach. It was HIGH and looked a difficult climb, but we were all proud to say that the 3 guys from our group who climbed it made it look easy and we clapped and cheered louder than all the spring breakers Here are some pics to give you an idea:
