An all powerful being who made the universe and all life can do anything, that's what I believed, until I stopped believing it. I don't mean to be rude but when people say they stayed in for decades and worked their ass off for something they didn't believe in, it baffles me. -

Jury Service in the UK

My iPad is going crazy I can't edit. Let Clerk of the Court know straight away. Perfectly acceptable to not take a religious oath. -

You can affirm rather than swearing a religious oath but need to tell the Clerk of the Court you want to do this.

How do stop myself getting too Bitter?
by stuckinarut2 inyou know, i always maintained that during this fading process, and while learning ttatt, i would not let myself get "bitter twisted and angry".... but, in all honesty, if i examine myself, i have become quite bitter toward the org, toward the false friends and the gb.. i have become angry as i see the extent of damage i feel being raised in "the truth" has done.... i feel hurt towards the lost opportunities in life etc.... how do i not allow myself to get too swallowed up by such bitterness?.
i have always been a very happy, positive, selfless person.
i can put people at ease, i am someone people feel comfortable chatting to.

Stuck, I know how you feel, we all struggle with this. The way I cope is I think there are so many ways to screw up your life or have it screwed up for you by circumstances, not just being in a cult.
Being born to rubbish parents, being born in a war zone, being born into poverty in a developing country, being depressed because of circumstances in our life and trying drugs and becoming an addict or catching AIDS. What has happened to us is recoverable from. Given time and work. Or should I say we can survive it and live a happy life.
People are born into circumstance beyond their control, thinking globally and studying history has taught me this. Not everyone has a mind open enough to cope with this idea but from reading and liking many of your posts I think you do.
We could stay angry and bitter for the rest of our lives but if we do that they win. I refuse to let this cult win.
Take care of yourself xx

I'm so glad you are doing much better Still Totally ADD. Well done for leaving a cult and getting yourself along the road to mental recovery. For myself, I had five years of clinical depression in the cult and even now odd days I hit rock bottom. But the length of time I stay down is becoming less and less, sometimes it's just half a day, sometimes just half an hour. We were all, at the very least, mentally abused by this cult and as you say some were sexually abused too. May we all keep on the road to recovery. Xx

JW Personality used as an excuse....
by Anon_SA1 ini had a discussion with a current jw member of +- 30 years, we got chatting about how you can be sure your faith is right and what checks can be done.
i then suggested looking at ex members view points and literature.
her response was her "i am not someone who takes initiative to look online at stuff, i doesn't feel my personality needs me look at outside view points" in summary she was saying her personality type is not interested in looking at other views.

It does ring a bell. My mother and eldest sister used to say things like 'I haven't got that sort of mind, I can't understand things like that'. If your friend is into denial so heavily I don't think it will help to just come out with it that she's in a cult.
It's a good sign that she didn't round on you immediately and call you an apostate when you suggested reading ex-JW stuff. There is certainly hope I would say.

The Bones are starting to Show
by Slidin Fast inthe latest phase of the uk charity commission case included this:.
subsequent to the opening of the inquiry, in a letter dated 10 july 2014, mr cook of the watchtower informed the respondent that the disfellowshipping hearing for mr rose had in fact been carried out by the elders of a different congregation, so the charity had played no role in that process.
mr cook (who is the in-house solicitor at the watchtower) later elaborated on his own letter in a witness statement for the tribunal.

Who are the CCoJWs where are its offices, who are its principals. Am I being paranoid or is this the new attempt at hands off disinfectant bath trying to keep the hirearchy away from the dirt?
You're not being paranoid. Of course this is a way to keep WTS away from all the recriminations involved in objections to disfellowshipping and all of the child abuse accusations. Complete whitewash. Those of us who were in this organisation know the CCoJWs is the Watchtower Society but they are trying to convince the Charities Commision otherwise. -

What is BELIEF ?
by EdenOne instemming from the 'absentheism' thread, an old question came to my mind.
what exactly is "belief"?.
is it the same to ask: "do you believe in god?
-

No Oub both statements are about belief, neither are about knowledge. Sorry, going to watch Horizon now- astronomy programme. -

Some assert a belief that there is no God. God does not exist.
Others may state that they do not believe God exists. These are not equivalent statements.I think they are the same statement grammatically and semantically. However, I understand what Sagan is saying, belief and certainty because of compelling evidence are two different things.

Lack of belief in god is not a claim that there is NO god. This is where people can't understand atheists
Sorry if I'm being thick but I don't know what this means? (I am an atheist)
