Hey, rawe, are you suggesting that the first life form was created by god?

does the universe have a collective consciousness?.
at the sub nuclear level of reality...we are all one.
at the core basis of the universe is a single universal field of intelligence.
A facet of hinduism is the study of consciousness. They have whole books on it:
'Perception is sensory awareness. Cognition is reflective awareness. Consciousness is awareness-as-such. In Indian psychology, as represented by Samkhya-Yoga and Advaita Vedanta systems, consciousness and mind are fundamentally different. Reality is the composite of being (sat), knowing (cit) and feeling (ananda). Consciousness is the knowledge side of the universe. It is the ground condition of all awareness. Consciousness is not a part or aspect of the mind. Mind is physical and consciousness is not. Consciousness does not interact with the mind, the brain or any other physical objects or processes. Nor does it have any causative role in mental activity. Hence the existence of consciousness does not interfere or upset the apparently closed physical system. Mind in this view is the interfacing instrumentality that faces consciousness on one side and the brain and the rest of the physical world on the other. Mind is closely connected with the different systems of the brain. In normal perceptions, the mind takes the forms of objects via the channels of the sensory system and the processes in the brain. The forms themselves are non-conscious representations of the world of objects. The mental forms (vrittis) become conscious experiences in the light of the purusha. The vritti in sensory form is perception and with the reflection of the purusha it becomes cognition. All conscious perceptions are therefore cognitions.

and they're shocked?.

I never thought that materialism and consumerism were pagan. The catholic church has never had a problem w having slave labor around.

just when i was thinking i don't like ted talks, this is an excellent take on job creation and wealth distribution.

Maybe, the title should be 'many rich people don't create jobs', or 'only SOME rich people create jobs'. I was just reading about sergio marchionne, an italian who grew up in canada. He bought into fiat, when it was down and broken and turned it around. Then, in 2009, he stepped into the chrysler mess and turned chrysler car company around in a couple of yrs. Chrysler paid back its bailout funds to canada and the usa.
Marchionne is a Builder. I use Builder capitalized, because Builders create wealth. They can take dirt and turn it into money. They do not do hostile takeovers and then slice up and sell off the pieces, then scurry off to their warren w the loot. Other examples of Builders are richard branson, henry ford, nicola tesla and lee iaccoca. Builders have their faults, of course, but they leave the world a better, richer place, generally.

Does inability to define consciousness stop us from experiencing it?

From sawe's post:
'First example of a life form - #?'
I don't see the problem w leaving it open to question. Coming from a teacher, it would make the students think, and that is a good thing, imo.
'(1) Things that are the result of intelligence
(2) Things that are the result of natural processes without the input of an intelligence.'
Maybe, leaving it at 2 possibilities is the problem. Is there intelligence in a virus? Don't think so. Yet, it acts very powerfully in the field of reproduction. Having intelligence as the only factor in the process is perhaps limiting the field of inquiry.

Good thread. The rich people create jobs meme has been carefully crafted w just the right amount of fear mixed in. That fear makes it a hard meme to kick.
