Endurance training and mental preparedness certainly are activities which are not gender-driven. Multitasking, though, is one in which women generally have an edge. There is a biological reason for that, explained in detail by Alan and Barbara Pease in their “Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps”.
In events where brute strength is not the determining factor, much of the male advantage is negated. (And the more so the greater the distance).
