I agree, The Fountainhead is more accessible.
Being a professional in the arts, I especially appreciate it.
first off, this is a book you want to read.
avoid the movie franchise at all costs.
horrible movies.. here's why i recommend this book: its prime focus is using rational reasoning to form your life philosophy - whether that be relationships, career or faith.. it also gives insight into the mind of someone who survived the geopolitical equivalent of the jws - the communist regime of stalin.. the antagonists of the book are referred to as "collectivists".

this topic is to focus on status updates & advice (no opinion or politics please).. status.
latest status is that it's serious, probably isn't going to be contained and most large companies are making contingency plans, cancelling large events etc... which i don't think would happen if it was just people being alarmist.
the incubation period means it may have already spread further and infected many more people than are currently known, so expect jumps in the numbers over the coming days and weeks.. tracking.
Two cases announced here in the Tampa Bay area.

In her philosophy she expressed that there is no such thing as altruism, that everyone exists for their own selfish needs.
This is incorrect. She thinks that altruism is a negative thing rather than a positive thing.
And her definition of "selfish" has to do with "rational self-interest."
She argues that the ultimate moral value, for each human individual, is his or her own well-being. Since selfishness (as she understands it) is serious, rational, principled concern with one's own well-being, it turns out to be a prerequisite for the attainment of the ultimate moral value. For this reason, Rand believes that selfishness is a virtue.
...
Rand understands, though, that the popular usage of the word "selfish" is different from the meaning she ascribes to it. Many people use the adjective "selfish" to describe regard for one's own welfare to the disregard of the well-being of others.
...
For her, the truly selfish person is a self-respecting, self-supporting human being who neither sacrifices others to himself nor sacrifices himself to others.

Stephen Hicks is a member of the Rand Society and I greatly admire his discourses on philosophy. I can't see me ever adopting full-blown Libertarianism.
I prefer to keep my Libertarianism to my own life and where I make the most impact. I focus on my work, teach my kids that hard work pays off and show them that just because someone is wildly successful doesn't entitle you to what they've earned.

I've seen many references to the book but haven't read it yet, something I'll maybe add to my list.
Simon, I was actually thinking that you would be someone that would really enjoy it. Especially with your rejection of the collectivist left over the last few years.
Some of the stuff the antagonists say in the book are almost word for word things you hear Obama, Trudeau, or Bernie say.

The antagonists of the book are referred to as "collectivists". The Watchtower Organization's philosophy is 100% collectivist. You will see the parallels to the org when you read this book.
The book is also surprisingly prescient in the way it describes the collectivist left and their motivations and things they struggle with.
Has anyone else read this? What did you think? Did the book get your proverbial wheels turning? Did you hate it? Did you think it was too long, but still liked the story?

Survival Food Recipe: Awesome & Authentic slow-cooker Frijoles Borrachos (Mexican-style Pinto Beans):
Place all the ingredients into a crock pot/slow cooker. Set on High for 6-8 hours. Occasionally check on the beans to make sure you don't need to add more water. Enjoy!
Leftovers can be mashed in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat along with some fat (butter, lard, oil) for authentic refried beans.
This recipe can also be done on the stove or over a fire. Just make sure to soak the beans overnight first if doing this method. Cook time will also not be as long as the slow cooker.
Note: Onions are also a good thing to stock up on. They may not last as long as canned food, but they will last quite a while on the shelf in a cool, dry place. I've had onions last for 6 weeks or more in our pantry...
hello all, i'm 'researching', a jw who is in the first steps of taking a look at their beliefs.. i've semi-recently (about a couple weeks ago) heard about the sexual abuse cases (pennsylvania attorney general’s investigation request) and then the arc in 2015. this lead to a deep investigation, which lead to many questions arising.
a jw friend of mine suggested i be careful (due to apostates) and ask the brothers.
so i typed up my questions + concerns and emailed an elder my mother has known for a long time.
Look up eviction laws and tenant rights of your country.
In most places in the US, if you’re receiving mail at a place and it’s your domicile, they cannot forcibly remove you from the home without filing a legal eviction with the court.
i wonder if there will be panic buying of food, guns, gas ect due to the corona virus.
what do you guys think?.
I’m buying 2 pounds of dry beans every trip to the grocery store.
I love beans, so even if there’s not a rush on the store and empty shelves, I’m gonna have some good food.
It doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” - Benjamin Franklin
my wife and i are not religious nor do we want to be.
we are very set in our spiritual beliefs.
we have worked with a jw who's family have been like a part of our family for 6 years.
They’re trained to indoctrinate and proselytize.
Yes, they are preaching to your children in the hopes that your kids will convert or you will convert.
I’m not saying these friends of yours are pedophiles, but the JW organization has a big problem right now protecting kids from predators in their midst. If your kids are going to these meetings, you need to research “Jehovah’s Witnesses Child Sexual Abuse.”
