Climbing the Walls
by Sargon ini've been planning this for 4 months, well sort of.
the planning took 5 minutes the procrastination has taken up the rest of the time.
after 26 years of indulging, i've finally tried to quit smoking.

Last years attempt failed on day 5. Here I am on day 6 of this years program. I was in seclusion for the first 4 days. When I returned home it was harder being surrounded by other smokers, but my room is a haven away from all the others. This year I am using the patch and it makes a world of difference. With the patch I think I can actually pull this off.

Will science ever replace religion?
by onacruse infirst, there've been some really good threads here lately...i've been somewhat pre-occupied with a rather laborious personal project, so i haven't been able to engage myself in your conversations as much as i'd otherwise like; but i like to watch .
but, to the point: recently, scott atran (anthropologist, author of in gods we trust, and now working with the national center for scientific research in paris, and at the university of michigan) gave an interview in discover magazine.
the topic was "the surprises of suicide terrorism," but the concluding question (and answer) was what struck me most:.

It gets scary when people try to use science to prove their religion, they always seem to ignore the parts that defy all scientific logic or say that's where you need faith. yeah, sometimes a giant leap of faith.

COLONIALISTS
by RAYZORBLADE inok, some of us...erm, most of us here, are of some sort of 'colonialist' extraction.. that being said, those of us, of the 'commonwealth' persuasion, do you have any comments or perceptions of your fellow *colonialist* nation neighbour?.
rayzorblade is here in canada, no surprise.. as far as my personal affinity towards great britain: zero.
do not take offense.. but, that being said, i look towards some of my other commonwealth neighbour nations: australia, new zealand, belize, malaysia, singapore, and many other nations i did not mention; how do you feel as a so-called: colonialist ?.

jgnat has good point about loyalist roots. The only hereditary title bestowed by the English Crown outside of the British Isles is the title UEL. United Empire Loyalists are the descendants of those who lost property or limb for remaining loyal to the crown during the American revolution. Many of those people settled in the part of Canada I live in and still cling proudly to that title. They print a magazine called the Loyalist, and meet at events like annual picnics and festivals celebrating their heritage. I'm not sure what our friends south of the border call the Loyalists but I'm sure it's not very flattering.

Personally I don't think about the other 'colonies' too much. Wasn't Australia a penal colony?

Talesin is right, Carole is not imposing at all. i met her 22 years ago when Rough Trade were at the height of their fame.
They performed at our university in '82, and since I was staff at the campus radio station I got to party with the band after the show in the campus pub. Carole was a howl, laughing and joking with everyone. You should be in for a good time morris.

Where did evil come from?
by laurelin ini'm new here, i only just found this site the other day so i don't know if i'm repeating something that has already been covered.
i'm sorry if i am.. can anyone help me on the scripture in genesis 2v9.. it says that god created two trees, the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and bad.
these were put into the garden before adam and obviously before adam and eve sinned.. if this is the case, does that mean god created bad?

Welcome Laurelin,
I think to truly understand where evil comes from one must ignore the mythology laid out in Genesis. This book was written at a time when man's knowledge was not very advanced. just a cursory study of this book will reveal what a crock of BS it really is.
Brummie may look like a cute cat, but I think he's right about evil coming from the hearts of men. I don't think we need some mystical explanation of a human phenomenon.
We sort of touched on this subject on another thread:
