D wiltshire,
Although I concider myself a christian I don't have a good answer and I feel that I have to be honest and admit it.My opinion of you just rose considerably.
the watchtower society dates noah's flood to 2370 b.c.e.
they do this by following bible chronology quite closely, counting backwards from 607 b.c.e., their date for babylon's destruction of jerusalem.
however, as we know, the society's date for that event is in error.

the following is (supposedly) an actual job application that a 17yr-old submitted at a mcdonald's in florida, u.s.a. he was hired for his humor and honesty.... ----------.
name: greg bulmash.
sex: not yet.
The best job interviews I've had have been more like conversations than interviews. We discuss a few things, laugh a bit, meander all over the place. Just like a conversation.
On this one interview, the best of my life, at one point the guy said to me, out of the blue, "Tell me a joke." I looked at him dumbly for a moment, asked if he meant what he just said, and when he repeated his request I told him a joke. When I was done, he told me I was the first person who had ever actually been able to tell a joke on the spot. I was hired.
There was a purpose to this, of course, as the job involved dealing with people and representing the company in a competent manner. He wanted to see if I could think on my feet and remain fluent even in unexepected moments. As I said, a very fun interview.
sorry, to ask a basic question.

ROFL! Even better!
hey guys,.
the family and i just got back from seeing the movie.
those of you who read the books will not be disappointed!
I'll be seeing it again too, to really understand how I feel about it. Now that I know what is missing, I won't go in with expectations, but will just be able to enjoy what is there.
I will say this: I very much enjoyed this movie. Yes, it's not Tolkien exactly, but I don't think anyone can do Tolkien in film form and have it work. Books are not movies. A successful film adaptation will not resemble the book except in spirit. Well, Harry Potter copied the book very closely, and was roundly criticized for lacking the imagination to do anything else. Thus it serves as an example of how NOT to adapt a book.
For all that I missed, and for my few quibbles with the choices Jackson did make, I am profoundly grateful that it was made by a fan of the book, with minimal Hollywood influence. If they had done a 'Harry Potter' to this movie I would have despaired. Instead, it was made a fan who truly understood what Tolkien was getting at. The message of hope intermingled with despair, of victory undercut by loss, by the sadness of the elves, by the passing of ages -- it's in the movie, albeit in abbreviated form that is appreciated more by fans than by those who don't know the book. So I'm grateful it wasn't turned into yet-another-fantasy movie, but a movie informed by Tolkien's sensibility, if not his every word.
We could have had far worse, and I was thrilled to see at least some of Middle Earth come alive. And remember, all you true fans, we will always have the books...

p.s.-have you read lost tales, Silmaril..., Tolkien Reader, etc.? Wogdog? Also, what do you think of CS Lewis?
Silmarillion: yes, and enjoyed it too.
Lost Tales: In the process of doing so, off and on, and not in any particular order.
Tolkien Reader: No.
Smith of Wooten Major: Yes
Leaf by Niggle: Yes
On Fairy Stories: Yes
C.S. Lewis: No

I dunno, I see the movie as being faithful to the mood very well, dwarf-tossing joke aside, though in spirit even that is the sort of thing a dwarf would think!
I do know that I really miss much of the depth and texture of the book. I look forward to seeing the DVD when it comes out, as I hear rumors that there is another hour of material that was cut. If that hour is put back in for the fans on the DVD "director's cut," I'll bet much of what I missed will be there.
I know that if I made the movie, you would like it more than Jackson's version, for much of what you complained about would not be there. My version would be very, very close to the book, would have the Old Forest, and Tom, and Bill Ferny, and the Cow Jumped Over the Moon, and the Midgewater Marshes, and seeing lightning on Weathertop from a distance, and wargs, and gifts from Galadriel....and the movie would be 5 1/2 hours long, loved by true believers, and ignored by everyone else, taking the movie studio into financial ruin in the process.
That's why I don't make movies.

tyydyy,
My mistake. I misread your post, and I apologize for that. I was genuinely curious about your meaning, which is why I asked my question to you. I was not trying to start an argument.
As it happens, I agree with your post, and was only curious about your opening. But, as I said, I misread it, and I regret that.

I do believe that the number of civilian deaths in Afganistan has probably surpassed the number of deaths on Sept. 11 but I also believe that it's a necessary evil. It's obvious that these zealots don't value their own lives.
The civilians are the zealots? I thought the Taliban and al Qaeda were the zealots.

The reign explained is mainly quite insane...
Sorry, couldn't resist the obvious setup line. The JW explanation for your conundrum is that Jesus began to reign in heaven in 1914, and reigns over his people on earth at this time, but does not yet extend his reign to the earth as a whole yet, which remains under Satan's control.
In other words, they teach that Jesus is king, but not yet over the earth. Or what I said in the opening song lyric ripoff...

RW,
I know it's a joke. I thought it was very funny, actually. But after I saw all the other guys talking about what they would do in such a circumstance, should it actually happen to them, I posted what I did to point out the impossibility of it ever occurring. It wasn't the joke I was responding to as much as the comments from the guys that followed.
Yes, the initial comment about female ignorance was meant for whoever invented this joke in the first place (I have no idea who did).
