Winter Olympics commentary from Aussie's larrikins

here in the land of oz we're enjoying watching our expert commentators, roy slaven and h g nelson, bringing the winter olympics to us on the seven network.

if you guys and gals can catch it, it's worth it, even to see what the sydney olympians enjoyed in 2000.. already they have given expert commentary on the figure skating events.. do you know what these expressions in figure skating mean:.

Well, here in the U.S., our 'hometown' coverage sucks big, big time. We could be watching live, but NBC figures they would rather tape it for later consumption. So while the snowboarders were going live today at 12 noon (ET), NBC didn't bother beginning its coverage until 3pm. Then they cut back and forth, focusing on the key names while not showing the rest of the competitors, undercutting with backstories, filler, and commercials aplenty.

The same is true for most of the coverage. They could do it live, but would rather slice and dice the coverage so that we barely get more than 5 minutes of coverage at a time. They must think Americans are so moronic we get bored in a couple of minutes, only care about the American athletes or (if necessary, sigh) the best athletes if they are from another country.

I am beginning to despise the way these Olympics are being trashed by NBC.

I live in the U.S. and I've never even seen those shows. Can't bothered with orchestrated 'reality' shows.

However, I would imagine there is a certain personality type that would want to be on those shows. And if ever there was a country where people are willing to humiliate themselves publicly in order to get free publicity, it's the U.S.

Yes, that was very clever of you and just the way JWs would reason. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see that reasoning in a WTS book one day. The only correction I would make is that the U.S. didn't go after Afghani Muslims at all, but Taliban who are not from Afghanistan. Both are Muslims, however, so your overall point holds up.

As for the talk transcript, here are some random thoughts:

Where did I ever say that a backpack nuke would take out a whole city? I said no such thing.

Of course not, you have learned your deception well from the WTS and you use it to perfection. What you said is this:

If you thought the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks were a shocker just consider the terror that would be evoked by the ominous mushroom cloud!

Backpack nukes don't give off mushroom clouds. The image you deceptively used was the one familiar to your readers, that of the military nuclear weapons that have been detonated in history. So you didn't actually say that a backpack nuke would take out a whole city, but you used imagery that would let your readers think that would be the outcome. As I said, the WTS uses this form of lying quite well, and you have learned your lessons.

But you certainly provided your own epitaph: SNEEKER It fits you perfectly, so I'm not surprised this word is in your heart so often.

I am well aware that tactical nuclear weapons were designed to be used on a battfield with the intended purpose of limiting the devastation to a relatively small area.

Indeed, but here again we aren't talking about tactical nuclear weapons, but backpack nukes. It is clear your knowledge of nuclear weaponry is as shallow as your knowledge of finance.

Thank you. I was wondering when someone was going to point out You Know's error on his backpack nuke scenario. Just as You Know doesn't understand finance, and thus keeps thinking every blip is going to crash the entire system any day now (and has thought this for half-a-decade of ever anticipatory salivation), he also doesn't understand nuclear technology. What Abaddon said is right, a backpack nuke would take out a few city blocks, but no more. New York City would not disappear under a mushroom cloud. What would happen is that a few blocks would be destroyed, and perhaps thousands of persons would die, bad enough but not what You Know envisions. In other words, it would be just like the WTC disaster again -- and we saw that this did not bring down the financial system even in the slightest.

You Know got his Y2K prediction wrong, for it hardly caused a blip anywhere.

You Know got his August prediction about the financial system wrong, for it did not go into meltdown mode.

You Know got his Central Bank argument wrong, for they did not keep reducing interest rates to zero but just said they are done lowering interest rates (You Know is a near-perfect contraraian indicator. If you want to make money, bet the exact opposite of what You Know says).

You Know got his scare-mongering backpack nuke scenario wrong, it could happen but it won't lead to the kind of destruction he thinks.

Folks, he gets everything wrong. It's 2002, and he said he would give up the JWs if the end hadn't come by 2001. He got that wrong too.

i had a letter today from the idiot jw "friend" back in wisconsin who was spreading all the gossip about us and she said something that is so stupid, but yet so jwish.

she said that "even if it were to turn out that everything the society has taught is wrong and armageddon never comes, the organization is still the best place to be.

" people with that mindset never will wake up.

they were discussing sodom and gomorah and how if jah had found a few righteous men in that city, both cities would be spared.

however, they mention jah protected lot and his daughters, as they were faithful and living nearby.

Barbaric as it sounds by our lofty modern-day standards, VioletAnai, the girls were doing what they had to. Coarse as it sounds, what else can be said? There were no men available to provide offspring to allow the nation to survive, as you subsequently pointed out. Indeed, "desperate times call for desperate measures" according to the old cliche.

"Had" to do? "Desperate"? "Survival"? They had just gotten out! What's the big, stinkin' rush? They couldn't wait a week or two and find suitable mates?

Sorry, the story is too ludicrous to be believable. It seems more like a story invented to make the Moabites and Ammonites look bad. Maybe the Moablites had a written history claiming Israel came from an incestuous beginning.

I agree, hypocrisy on this issue can go both ways. To be fair, some people recognize that we don't live in a true capitalistic society and they like it that way. They want the government to step in and help. In this country, we saw a marked increase in this attitude post-9/11. Everybody ran to the government and said, 'Help us!' And I don't just mean militarily. There's a lot of money flowing out of Washington right now, and people want their share.

I don't know what the right approach is. Totally capitalistic, with no government involvement the way the Libertarians say? Not sure that is best. Socialistic, the way Europe is run? Not sure. But what I do know is that this issue is not as simple as some Americans make it out to be. Socialism is not near-Communism, it is what Congress practices a lot of the time without them ever focusing on it.
