Nice letter. Glad you're out. I've already heard of some stepping down after this last CO letter about reviewing elders and MS who allow family members to go to college, or go themselves.

Letter to Elders As An MS Going to College
by daniel-p in[this is the letter i wrote in december, 2005 to my po just before i confronted all my doubts.
the infamous article bashing higher education had just come out and i was having a hard time making sense of everything.
i was still a ministerial servant, and it just pushed me over the edge.

Lawyers at Bethel
by nbernat ini heard that bethel pays for brothers' undergrad and law school expenses if they serve as lawyers, is that true?
also, just to see the hypocrisy, would they accept someone who went to harvard law even if they weren't a regular pioneer?

If you were a brother or sister with a Harvard Law degree, and your congregation recommended you for Bethel service, I bet you'd be snapped up in a second. If you were of questionable spirituality, as indicated by you BOE, I doubt if they would take you.
Sorry if I misunderstood your initial question. Also I totally agree with Forscher's comment a few posts back that the WTS will occasionally pay for a Bethelites education if they are of proven loyalty and the Society has a need.
Covington was at one time a member of the Governing Body - but did not claim to be of the anointed. Eventually that was changed, so that only anointed ones would be on the GB. He did defend Muhammad Ali against the Selective Service. Interesting in that to do so, he would have had to argue for things that, as I remember it at the time, seemed to me contrary to what JWs taught and believed.
There is an interesting tape, I had it at one time, of a talk about Covington, perhaps his funeral talk, by a brother who knew him well. It's pretty interesting, and does not gloss over Covington's problems with alcohol. He argued, and won, a remarkable number of cases before the US Supreme Court.

Do You Consider Yourself a "Bright?"
by XJW4EVR ini have recently been exposed to this term, and i am currently doing research for a paper on this movement.
i am wondering if there are any on this board that would affirm this label for themselves.

I signed up with the Brights website, so I guess I would be considered one. But it's such a loose term. It's not exactly like getting baptized as one of JWs! No two questions and oath of loyalty to the WTS.

Confronting distortions with truth: my battle with JW apologist websites
by coffee_black inconfronting distortions with the truth: my recent battle with jw apologist websites.
i have recently become aware of jw apologist websites that have used my dad's name as well as my own to distort the role the societys' teachings played in my dad's refusal of a life saving kidney transplant and inevitably his death.
my dad's story is told in brief in numerous places on the internet.

How do you get a book published?
by Awakened at Gilead insince leaving jws i have read as many books as i have found written by exjws... i have noticed that some on this board have projects and books that they are working on.... i have an idea for a book that seems to fill a niche in the exjw market... i won't say what it is yet, since i don't want anyone stealing my idea, since it is just hatching... but suffice it to say that i see a need for this book that i would like to write... and i think i could do it... .
i am going to start writing soon, as i have all tehse ideas swimming around in my head... i need to get them onscreen in my computer...any ideas on how to start to get something published?

I subscribed to WD for years. I think you can probably get all of that info on-line now for free.
The thing I learned that helped a lot in my writing career is to make as many personal connections in the writing world as possible. I've gotten tons of jobs that way - by people coming to me that knew me.

I have a question for the elders/ex-elders
by asilentone inwhat would the elders do if they learned about a brother that went to the business expo at the local church?
-
Seeker4
Hell, as an elder 20 years ago I went to weddings and funerals in Churches, and I never missed a 5 year class reunion either. So much of this depended on your local BOE. If they were nosy, no-boundary pricks, you could get in trouble. If they were decent guys, they left you alone.

Ran into old JW friend in the airport...Correspondence has ensued...
by Confession init was the same weekend that my mom and dad, to my surprise, agreed to meet with me.
i was in midland, michigan, about a month ago, only an hour or so from where they live.
in the airport on monday morning, in walked john, someone i remembered well from the jw congregation of my youth.

This is interesting.
I've met many an ex-JW who is similar to your friend. Still has all the respect and high regard for the WTS as ever, even quoting you scriptures, yet hasn't been involved for years himself.
They see us as obsessed, negative and angry, we see them as pathetically still clueless about what the WTS really is. I found myself thinking, "Hey, this guy sounds like he's intelligent. What in hell is wrong with his critical thinking skills??"
I'm not sure what the best thing to say is. Drew Sagan had some good advice. I'm not sure what common ground can be found. He was really patronizing toward you. He still sounded very much like a counsel-giving JW, with the know-it-all, I know what's best for everyone approach of a typical Witness.
I can think of a lot of things I'd like to say to him, but I'm afraid I just keep sounding like I'd be getting myself into a go-nowhere pissing match, which I'm quite capable of doing!
